With the encouragement of the girls, I brought the map outside so that Saple could see where we were going. Veronica knew the importance of our ride knowing the way. Gale had said using the dragon was the only way they would make it back in time to save the father monster.
Saple looked at it for a long moment. Then he snorted and tossed his head. The movement ended with a sneeze.
“I remember the great war that claimed those lands because I fought in them. That was long ago.” Saple explained in a knowing voice that made him sound especially wise. “There is a nearby fort we should visit. It was once a thriving metropolis and is sure to have the answer to fighting the keeper.”

I was little again, maybe five. Up until I saw the look in the monster king’s haunted eyes at Saple’s cell, all I could remember from back then was how scared I had always been. Then, there was nothing. I floated in a black sea that rocked me soothingly, as I let it carry me away. But suddenly it was bright.Groaning, I opened my eyes to see that I was standing downstairs in the castle I called home. I walked through that familiar dark door. Recognizing my younger self immediately, I felt a wave of sadness mix with a disorienting sense of future gloom.My father stood in the middle of the room. When I woke up, I was confused for a few minutes about where I was and what was happening. Everything looked weird. All the colors around me were so much brighter and the darkness had much more depth.I didn’t understand. But there was an important mission that we came here for that needed my attention right now. I looked over where the snake had come out.The blue flower was laying on it’s side on the ground but I cannot remember how it got separated from its stem. I picked it up gently. We flew to the castle. But the closer we got, the darker it was. Trees were quickly losing leaves but it was the wrong season for that. The air was cold.“The keeper is drawing life out of everything within its reach. It has an unending hunger. The devastation will reach the next village by night fall if we don’t stop it now.” Saple rumbled.I didn’t need a reminder of how scary this was and knowledge like that didn’t seem helpful. A strange mewling noise caught her attention. She swallowed back her tears as she turned towards the noise. The dragon was lamenting the loss of Roger. It was the most miserable and saddest thing she had ever seen or heard.Suddenly, Saple’s eyes glowed bright red. He roared, as he let go of a stream of fire into the air, and magic crackled like lightning around them. The storm clouds built quickly around Saple and Roger but this time they engulfed the entire area, leaving Veronica stumbling around in a purple fog.She wasn’t sure what she was seeing between the darkness and the limited sight of the grainy fog.
