The first thing Isabella registered was the sharp sting of disinfectant. Her eyelashes fluttered, and she glanced around confused, her mind initially not registering where she was.

Then she heard voices just right above, they sounded urgent, like someone was dying...

"… her pressure is dropping, call Dr Elise!"

"I think she's waking up."

"Move slowly, she's lost a lot of blood, and she's pregnant too!"

A cold hand touched her wrist and Isabella blinked hard as the room slowly came into focus, white walls, and people surrounding her in white attire. "Am I in heaven," she thought with furrowed brows. 'Did I die?"

The faint beeping of the machine connected to her arm snapped her out of the trance. Hospital. Her breath hitched as memories rushed into her head. Her fingers curled against the bedsheet. "Nikolai…" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Someone rushed to her side in the blink of an eye. "Miss Isabella?" Roman’s voice cracked terribly, as if he’d aged years i

Three months had passed since the explosion that supposedly ended the reign of Nikolai Volkov. Three months since Russia mourned the fall of a king and Sergei had taken over the position as the acting leader of the gang. In Tuscany , Italy, on a long table in the center of a dim room sat in dark suits, The European mafia Council, the highest circle of the Eastern underworld. Every seat was taken by dozens of high-ranking members who sat stiffly, their expressions carved with worry. The air smelled of cigar smoke, gun oil, and whiskey. At the head of the table sat Sergei Volkov, the former Don, and the man everyone once feared. His fingers tapped rhythmically against the polished wood. "Let us begin," he said coldly. Suddenly, murmurs spread through the room as one of the councilmen, Viktor, rose from his seat. "Three months without a leader," he began. "No one has seen Nikolai since that night, I think it's time to find a new leader" Several men nodded while a few others hid

  • The Crime Lord's Obsession    Chapter 53- The king is dead

Isabella didn’t remember how long she stared at the broken phone pieces scattered across the floor. Her mind refused to process what she had just heard. The room around her blurred, tears blurring her vision. The balloons, the roses- everything she’d prepared to celebrate her happiest moment felt like a cruel joke now, mocking her. Her arms shook violently. Her heart tightened in her chest so that she couldn’t breathe. "…Miss. Isabella… I’m sorry… It's about Nikolai... he was caught in an accident and his car… it exploded… he didn’t make it…" Roman’s voice rang in her head. She stumbled backwards until her knees hit the edge of the bed. She dropped onto it, clutching the sheets, her breath coming out in shallow gasps. "No… no… no…" she whispered, shaking her head hard, as if she could undo the words by refusing to accept them. Imelda who had left the room to handle something hurried back in at the sound of the phone crashing. "Isabella? What happened...?" Isabella looked up a

Isabella stood in the middle of the bedroom, one hand pressed over her heart, staring at the decorations she’d been arranging for the past hour. Balloons floated gently near the ceiling, soft white and pale gold. Roses were spread across the bed, their petals arranged carefully around a small wooden box that held the pregnancy test and the ultrasound she had received from the hospital. Her fingers trembled slightly. Behind her, Imelda stepped forward, wiping her hands on her apron with an embarrassed smile. "The room looks beautiful," she said softly. "He’ll truly love it." Isabella turned to face her, her eyes wide and sparkling. "Really? I mean... he might think it’s stupid." "Nonsense," Imelda said and shook her head. "This is the happiest news of your life. And his too." She placed her hand on Isabella’s shoulder caringly. "Nikolai has always wanted to have a family again. Ever since…" she trailed off gently as if contemplating whether to continue "... he lost his wife and da

  • The Crime Lord's Obsession    Chapter 51- His fault

The road blurred past Nikolai as he drove into the city, the engine growling under his grip. He wasn’t sure how fast he was going, not like he cared anyway. The thought of his father on that day stuck to him like glue. Only if he hadn't asked him to take him out that day maybe he'd still be alive... Everything was his fault! Ten minutes later, he pulled over into a narrow alley behind his usual bar. He pushed the car door open and stepped out, adjusting his jacket, then glanced around to confirm it was safe. Inside, the bar was nearly empty. Just a few regulars hunched over their drinks and a bartender, who didn't look familiar, not like he cared anyway. "Whiskey," Nikolai said taking a stool beside the bar, he didn't bother sitting in his VIP section. Nikolai didn’t notice the bartender’s fingers linger on the edge of a bottle longer than necessary, as he slipped something into the whiskey unnoticed. The glass was filled in an instant as several more bottles were placed befo

The sun was almost setting when Nikolai stepped out of the black SUV. The mansion before him had always felt unwelcoming, ever since his childhood. Nothing had changed many years later, it was still the same. Roman waited beside him. "Boss, are you sure you want to go in alone?" Nikolai didn’t bother replying. He dipped his hands in his pants pockets and walked through to the entrance without looking back. Two guards stood at attention at the entrance. They bowed as Nikolai passed. Nikolai ascended the stairs and headed straight to the study, and without knocking he stepped inside. Sergei’s head snapped up instantly, his eyes darkening at the sudden intrusion. "Did I invite you in?" he growled, slamming his palm on the desk. "You think because you carry my name you can walk into my study without knocking?" Nikolai didn't even spare him a glance, instead, he walked to the chair opposite him, "You called for me?" Sergei was seated behind a large oak desk, his greying hair sl
