"I’m… pregnant." Rosa's voice trembled, but her tear-rimmed eyes watched Nikolai hopefully.

She expected him to be shocked then rushed forward, cradled her and whispered happily that she had made him the happiest man in the universe...

Instead, he stared at her as if she were a stranger speaking a foreign language. Only a cold, unreadable silence as if he hadn't understood what she had just said.

"Nikolai, didn't you hear me. I said I'm pregnant!"

Imelda stood frozen behind Nikolai, her fingers clutching her apron. She was silently praying that Nikolai wouldn’t fall for this lie. And the way he looked at Rosa now… Yes, he wasn’t swallowing it.

Finally, he spoke, his voice cold. "Then," he said quietly, "we will run a test."

"What?" Rosa’s smile cracked. "What test?" she asked quickly in disbelief. "Nikolai… you don’t believe me?"

"I believe in facts," he replied, stepping past her. "Prepare yourself, we’re going to the doctor, now."
