The phone was already pressed to my ear as the SUV rolled past the front gate. Sasha did not waste time with greetings.

“You have lost your mind,” he snapped. His voice was all steel, the kind that came from years of command. “We pulled a rogue out of Charleston less than forty-eight hours ago. He is still strapped to a chair in my office, and you are taking your wife right back into the city?”

I let him talk. He always needed the first volley.

“It is a short outing,” I said when he finally stopped for air. “A few hours. Ivan is with us. Matthew is driving. We will be back before sundown.”

Sasha’s laugh was bitter. “Ivan is not a battalion. He is one man. One man does not cover you, your wife, and a civilian driver. Do you think this is a game?”

“Hardly.”

“Then stop acting like it. The rogue we caught did not fight when we cornered him. He did not run. He waited. Do you understand what that means? He wanted us to take him. He is planted. He is bait. And you are walking into the trap.”

By the time we left the roof my head felt lighter, though I could not tell if it was from the bourbon or the stars or the relief of being somewhere no one else could touch us. The garden below was still roaring with music and voices, but when Nathaniel closed the door to our suite the sound dulled, like we had cut a thread.I leaned back against the wall and kicked off my shoes. My toes ached from smiling and standing and pretending all day. The gold dress had been beautiful this morning, but now it clung to me like dead weight. I wanted it off my body.Nathaniel had his tie undone, his jacket draped over a chair. He always moved so controlled, every line of him sharp, but I saw the heaviness in his shoulders. He looked as worn as I felt, though I doubted he would truly admit it.I peeled the gown from my skin and let it fall to the floor. He only looked at me once, eyes unreadable, then walked into the bathroom and turned on the water.“Shower,” he said.I followed. The tiles were co

Since it seemed like the Court wanted spectacle, I gave her silence and stars instead. It was later than I wanted. My brothers dragged me out of brunch and into my office where they spent the whole afternoon going in circles about the merger. They argued over details, fought over control, threw names on the table and crossed them back out. It went on until I thought I would tear the contracts in half and throw them into the fire. By the time I finally left them, the sun was gone, the garden was still full of drunks, and I was angry that I had wasted hours away from her.At least the stars were out. When I opened the door to our rooms, I half expected her to be pacing or ready with a sharp remark. But she wasn’t. She was curled up on the sofa with her legs tucked under her, a book in her lap and her phone in her hand. The lamp threw a warm light over her face, softening the sharpness I had seen all day. She looked smaller there, not the woman who had been paraded in front of hundreds o

I had never been so aware of my hands, of how many eyes watched to see if they shook. All eyes were on us as we sat at the head of the table. The ballroom had been reconfigured during my sleep. It was the same room I left last night, but now instead of many small round tables, one long table ran through the center of the room. Nathaniel and I were seated at the head of the table surrounded by our family. The Eternal Court was seated on the opposite end. Even from this far away, I could make out with clear distinction their curious eyes. After the well wishes, if that is what I could even call them, last night, I was hesitant to do anything but smile and play my role. There was loud chatter everywhere I looked. People laughed as they ate, all blissfully unaware of the danger that lurked around Nathaniel and I. When he found me in his bed, we contemplated ignoring our duty and staying wrapped up in each other, but the King was concerned with our public image. I tried to argue that we

Leaving Margot’s side filled me with dread. Ivan wasn’t outside our door, taking a much needed rest I hoped. Instead he had placed three guards I recognized. They were human and in theory could be destroyed easily by a skilled vampire, but I doubted that whoever was pulling strings behind the curtain was bold enough to go after Margot the day after our wedding.I walked the corridors with a spring in my step. Regardless of the threat, I was satisfied with the claiming of my bride last night. I was a happy King knowing that there was a warm body waiting for me back upstairs. She was mine in every sense of the world. But now that I had a taste, I don’t think I would ever stop wanting her. She might be my wife, but I would continue pursuing her for the little moans she gifted me at each lick and kiss. I couldn’t stop my thoughts from turning to sex. It was a natural response with the Binding pounding in my ears louder with every step. But I tried in vain to rein in the pubesce

I awakened to a warm body pressed against me from behind. It was moving slightly, shifting to get comfortable. The dark shades covering the window don’t tell me what time it is, but I suspect it’s early. Too early considering we went to bed well after three in the morning. Nathaniel wasn’t kidding about the vampire stamina. He had spent the night showing me how great it could be sharing a bed. I was convinced I had entered heaven by the time I drifted off to sleep. He was already hard behind me- his cock fitting perfectly against my ass cheeks. I immediately felt the low burn in my belly telling me to sit on it. The Binding didn’t care that I was tired, it wanted to be fed. I pressed against his hardness and was not surprised to feel him react. “Good. You’re awake,” is all he says before he rolls me to my back and hovers over me. We’re both naked and he stares at me up and down like he’s never seen me naked, even though he spent all night appreciating my body. I stretched my arms a
