*Chapter 20: Missing Her Voice*

The silence in the house was wrong.

Hector stood in the doorway of the guest room and felt it crawl up his spine.

The bed wasn’t just empty. It was untouched.

Corners sharp. Pillow centered. Blanket smoothed like it had never been slept in at all.

A cold weight settled in his stomach.

“Beatrice?” The word scraped out of him.

He tried again, louder. “Beatrice!”

Nothing. Only the faint hum of the fridge from the kitchen.

Footsteps behind him. Simy,

*Chapter 43: A NEW BEGINNING*Dawn broke over the reef in silence. No war-horns. No tide-drums. No guards dragging kin to the Moon Arena. For the first time in a generation, the current itself seemed to settle. The Coral Throne sat empty at the heart of the Tide-Court. It had not been empty since King Dave claimed it. Today, it would be filled differently.Hector stood before it. His argent tail shimmered beneath the glass-dome of the court. The royal sigils along his spine glowed steady, silver against his skin. He wore no battle harness. Only a sash of deepwater blue and pearl-white, the colors of tide and sky.Beside him hovered Beatrice. Her caudal fin was midnight-ocean. A circlet of reef-pearl and shell rested in her dark curls, waiting. The Tide-Court was full. Every elder of the shoals. Every family from the outer reefs. Simy stood at the fore with the new guard, his shoulders squared. Even Zadar was there, near the back watching.Hector lifted his chin. His voice carri

Even the currents held still. At the center, two figures waited.King Dave hovered at the eastern point. Black tail. Bare chest scored with old wars. His royal trident thrummed in his grip. He looked every part the tyrant the ballads warned of.Across from him, Hector held the western point. Silver tail. Royal runes glowing faint along his spine and shoulders. His trident was plain reef-coral, but the tide bent toward it.Between them, Zadar drifted. Smiling. Before the first horn could sound, a shadow cut through the water.Dove.Royal guard. Young. Broad through the shoulders. His tail was storm-blue, and his eyes were the same blue as the deep sea. He came to a stop at King Dave’s flank, trident leveled.“I

  • The Current Between Us    The Trial of the Tide.

*Chapter 41: THE TRIAL OF THE TIDE*The tide pressed against the living coral of the Court.Outside, the deep currents swirled. Inside, ten thousand merfolk held their breath. Every eye was still locked on Hector, and on the silver tail coiled protectively beside Beatrice’s bare feet. The silence cracked with a laugh.Bright. Sharp. Wrong for a chamber heavy with grief.Zadar drifted forward. She moved like black silk through water. Her long, midnight tail flicked once, twice, carrying her without effort to the center of the dais. Bone beads clicked in her hair. Sea-weed robes drifted around her like smoke. She hovered in the center, between the Coral Throne and the kneeling guards, and let the current carry her voice to every ear.“Now,” she said. “Now the lost Prince is back.”She turned. Her webbed hand lifted. One long, black-nailed finger pointed straight at Hector.“This merman here,” Zadar announced, smile curling. “Is the lost Prince. Prince XRana.”A shiver moved through the

The Royal runes beneath Hector’s scales pulsed faintly, like a heartbeat.Beatrice was the first to speak. She looked at Hector’s face, at the sparks of silver in his eyes, at the royal fins that now held him upright.“How?” she whispered. “How come you are now a merman?”Hector opened his mouth. He wanted to answer. He wanted to tell her about the memories crashing into him.He never got the chance.A voice, dry and old and delighted, cut through the court.“Ah! Questions! I love questions!”Dark magic rolled like ink through the water. Zadar stepped forward from beside the Coral Throne. Her black robes floated around her. Pearls and bones were braided into her hair. Her eyes were bright. She clapped her hands once and the sound echoed like a bell.“Everyone, please sit!” she commanded. “Guards, sit. King,

  • The Current Between Us    The Royal Tail

*Chapter 39: The Royal Tail*The court didn’t breathe. In the center of the Court, Beatrice was crying. Her shoulders shook. Her tears drifted up in silver pearls and burst against the water. She held Hector’s face between her hands like if she let go, the sea would take him again.“Please don’t leave me,” she whispered. “Please don’t join my mom. Please—”She didn’t notice it at first. Not the stillness. Not the gasps. Not the way two hundred merfolk had dropped to their knees without a sound. She didn’t notice that Hector had a tail. Not just a tail. A *Royal Tail*.It curled in her lap, long and silver, scales catching the light from the Coral Throne like moonlight on wet stone. The fins were edged in white, and faint runes glowed beneath the surface of each scale, old Tide-Magic, the kind sung about in lullabies and forbidden in law.By the law of the Court, any Prince without a silver tail was an *abomination*. He could not inherit. He could not rule. He could not carry the

  • The Current Between Us    Sea and Land.

*Chapter 38: Sea and Land*Simy hit the water with a splash that felt too small for how scared he was. The mask was tight on his face. The pistol was tucked into his waistband, useless. He kicked. Down. The beach disappeared above him. The sun disappeared next. The deeper he went, the darker it got. And the darker it got, the louder his heart got. _Beatrice. Hector. Hold on._ He’d swum in the ocean before. At the community pool. At the beach with Hector on Sundays. This wasn’t that. This was cold. This was heavy. This was like the water was watching him. Fifty feet down, something moved in the dark. A shadow. Big. Then bigger. Simy froze. A shark. Not a small sea shark. This was a monster. Grey, twelve feet long, with a mouth that could swallow him whole. It circled once, lazy, then its head snapped toward him. It had caught his scent. Simy’s blood went cold. He kicked hard and shot behind a large rock. Pressed his back to it. Held his breath. The shark s
