The Curse Between Two Worlds

"Trust me, Charles, this party is going to be the highlight of your entire life,” Carter said, flashing that grin that always meant trouble.I gripped the wheel of my jet black Camaro, cruising through the suburban maze, eyes peeled for the telltale signs—thumping bass, strobe-colored lights bleeding through curtains, and the occasional couple tangled up in the shadows of somebody’s neatly trimmed bushes. I had no doubts Flag’s party would be everything the rumors promised. Spiked punch. Grinding bodies. Drunken games that always ended with either someone crying, puking, or streaking across the neighbor’s lawn. According to Carter, if those things weren’t present, it wasn’t a real party—it was a funeral with music. I pulled into the driveway, headlights sweeping across red Solo cups crushed like casualties on the pavement, toilet paper streaming from the oaks like ghostly banners. It was chaos before I even killed the engine.Wealth was never my problem. My family was comfortable enou

The world around me hummed like a heartbeat. I stood in the middle of a field — not the same one from earlier, but something warped and unfamiliar. The sky overhead bled shades of red and violet, colors bruising into one another like an open wound. The grass swayed though there was no wind, each blade whispering my name in a chorus of voices I didn’t recognize.“Charlie…”I turned, and Carter was there — standing at the edge of the field, just beyond a crooked fence that seemed to stretch into forever. He stared out at something I couldn’t see, his back to me. A faint light flickered before him, soft and pulsing, like a dying ember trying to stay alive.“Carter?” I called, my voice smaller than I meant it to be, weak against the hush of the world. “Where are we?”He didn’t turn, but his hand lifted slightly — slow, deliberate. Something glimmered between his fingers, sharp and dark, humming with quiet power. For a split second, the light caught his face, and I saw what the shadows had

The smoke hadn’t even cleared, and already the room felt smaller. Tighter. Like the walls were closing in, choking out the air I needed just to think straight. The Wicked’s voice still echoed in my head—calm, amused, certain. Like he already knew how this all ended. Like he knew me. I stared at the spot where he’d stood, the haze of his disappearance still hanging there, taunting me. My fists wouldn’t stop trembling. Not from fear—at least, that’s what I told myself—but from something darker. Something that made my chest feel like it might split open.“Carter?” Charlie’s voice came from somewhere behind me, soft and uncertain. I didn’t answer. Couldn’t. If I opened my mouth now, I didn’t trust what might come out.Snow’s voice broke through the silence next. “He knows,” she said, quiet but sharp enough to cut through my thoughts. “He knows who you are now.”I forced myself to breathe. Knows who we are. That was supposed to mean something, right? Chosen Ones. Heroes. Fate. All the stuf

I stepped into the hut with a sick twist in my gut, leaving Snow and Charlie behind by the fence. The air inside was thick with the smell of smoke and herbs—dense enough to choke on. The Wizard sat in his usual chair by the fire, his pipe glowing faintly in the dim light. Shadows danced across his face, making his expression unreadable.“You wanted to see me?” I asked, closing the door softly behind me.He didn’t answer right away, just exhaled a slow stream of smoke that curled like a serpent in the air. Finally, he nodded toward the worn couch across from him. “I did. Sit, boy.”I hesitated for a moment before obeying, my pulse hammering in my throat. “What’s this about?”The Wizard rested his pipe on the side table with deliberate care. His gray eyes met mine, sharp as a blade. “I’m not one to dance around the truth, child. We need to talk about what happened between you and him last night.”My stomach dropped, cold and heavy. He knew. “What do you—”“Do not play the fool with me,”
