I knew I should be in the wedding hall by now.
Standing there. Waiting. Smiling like I wanted this. But instead I'm staring at myself in my mother's bedroom mirror, and I'm asking myself the same question I've been asking for the past three days: Am I actually going to do this? The girl looking back at me is someone I don't recognize. The white dress is too perfect. My hair is too curled. My makeup is too done. I look like a girl who's excited to marry a stranger. I look like a liar. "Aria?" My mother's voice comes from down the hall. "It's time." I didn't move. She appears in the doorway a second later. She's wearing the blue dress that's been in her closet for years. The one she saves for important moments. Her eyes are red but she's fixed her makeup so you can barely tell. "You look beautiful," she says, and she means it. I can hear it in her voice even though she's been crying. "Mom, what if...." "What if nothing," she says. She walks over and stands behind me in the mirror. We look at each other's reflections. "Your father made mistakes, Bad ones with very bad people and now they want money we don't have. This man, he's powerful. He can fix this. He can save us." "What if he's cruel?" I ask. "Then you survive," she says. She puts her hands on my shoulders and squeezes. "You're stronger than you think." I don't feel strong. I feel like I'm disappearing. She takes my hand and leads me into the hallway. We walk toward the main staircase where my father is waiting in a suit that's too tight. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. When he sees me, something in his face shifts. Relief maybe. Or guilt. "You look nice," he says. It's the nicest thing he's said to me all week. He takes my hand and we walk toward the reception hall. The doors are closed. I can hear people talking behind us. My mother's friends are gossiping. The groom's family sitting in silence. "Thank you," my father whispers. He squeezes my hand once. Then the doors open. The walk down the aisle feels like it takes forever. My heart is beating so hard I'm sure everyone can hear it. I keep my eyes down, focusing on my feet. Don't trip, Don't cry, Don't run. And then I see him. He's standing at the altar in a black suit. His hair is dark. Really dark. His eyes are darker. He's beautiful but not in a way that makes sense. Not like the guys in movies. Beautiful like... dangerous. Like something you shouldn't be looking at for too long. His jaw is sharp. His face is all angles and hard lines. He has this look like he's bored. Like he's somewhere else and this is just something he has to get through. He watches me walk toward him without smiling. My father puts my hand in his and goes back to sit down. The groom's hand is ice cold. Actually ice cold. I almost pull away but I don't. I keep the fake smile on. The priest says words I didn't really pay attention to. All I said was "I do" even though every part of me is screaming not to. He says "I do" like he didn't really care either. The priest tells him to kiss me and he leans down and kisses my forehead. Not my lips. Just my forehead. Like I wasn't he's already. Everyone applauds. We walk back down the aisle and I'm officially married to a stranger. We're in the reception hall for maybe five minutes. I'm holding a glass of champagne I haven't touched, standing next to my husband who hasn't said a single word to me, when the doors explode inward. Some man walks in. They were all dressed in black like it was some kind of funeral. I turned to look at my husband but he looked still and too controlled. There was lot of them. The whole room goes quiet. My husband stands up slowly. "What the fuck are you doing?" he asked one of them who looked like the leader. His voice is so quiet I can barely hear it, but the way he says it makes everyone freeze. The other man smiles. It's cruel. "Cleaning up, boss sent us," he says. Then he raises his hand like he had some kind of powers and my mother was already hanging in the air screaming. Her entire body goes stiff. I watch the veins in her neck turn black. Actual black. Like poison is running through her, under her skin. She tries to stand but she can't. Her legs just collapse. She's trying to say something but blood is coming out of her mouth. My father tries to run. But he didn't make it far. The same black veins spread through his body. The same horrible sound coming from his throat. He looks at me once, with eyes that are already going dark, and then he just... falls. Seeing this everyone is scattered in the hall.... running for their lives. I couldn't move. I can't breathe…..I stood so still My mother's hand twitches. Once. Then it's still. "No," I whisper. "No, no, no..." I'm trying to move toward them but my husband grabs my arm. His grip is so tight it hurts. "Don't," he says. The man who killed them is now walking toward us, moving through the crowd like everyone is invisible. "We need to go," my husband says. He pulls me away from the altar, away from the bodies, toward a door at the back of the hall. "She needs to know," the man said. "Not yet," my husband says. Now I looked at both of them confused...know what? He's dragging me through the hallway and I sob so hard I couldn't breathe. My legs barely work. We get to a car parked in the back and he opens the door and pushes me inside. "Sit," he says. I fell onto the back seat. I'm shaking so badly I think I'm going to throw up. I keep seeing my mother's eyes. I keep seeing my father falling. He gets in the front seat and turns around to face me. His expression is completely cold. "Stop sobbing," he says quietly. "They're not even your real parents anyway. They made a deal with the mafia to sell you to Us. And my twin brother will not be happy knowing that his bride is a pathetic weakling who cries over people who never loved her.”The words were still hanging in the air she will destroy us all when the second attack came.I didn't even see it happen. One moment Kai had his arm around me, walking me out through the wreckage of the dining hall, and the next there was a blur of motion from the shattered window, a second figure dropping down from somewhere above the courtyard wall, blade already swinging toward the unprotected side of my body Kai hadn't thought to cover. He saw it before I did."Get down!" He shoved me hard, out of the blade's path, and turned into the strike himself instead of away from it.The sound it made when it connected didn't feel real. A wet, terrible sound, and then Kai staggered back a step, one hand pressed to his side, dark blood already spreading fast between his fingers."Kai!"Draven was there in an instant, driving the second attacker back with a force that sent the intruder crashing through the remains of the window frame and out into the courtyard, gone before the guards even re
Breakfast was a disaster.I kept my eyes on my plate like it owed me money, but I could feel Draven watching me from across the table, that insufferable smirk never once slipping, like he'd won some prize I didn't know I was competing for. Every time I looked up by accident, he was already looking at me, and my face went hot all over again for the tenth time in twenty minutes."You're very interested in your eggs this morning," Draven said, propping his chin on his hand."They're good eggs.""You haven't touched them.""I'm savoring the moment.""Are you." He grinned wider. "Sleep well?"I choked on my juice.Kai's fork paused halfway to his mouth. His eyes moved from me " red-faced", refusing to make eye contact with anyone to Draven, who looked entirely too pleased with himself for a man doing absolutely nothing wrong."What," Kai said slowly, "is going on.""Nothing," I said, at the exact same moment Draven said, "A lot, actually," and I kicked him under the table hard enough that
Kai didn't try explaining anything. He just walked me back to my room in silence, his jaw so tight I could see the muscle working beneath his skin, and when I tried to ask, twice infact and he simply said, "Not now," in a voice that made it clear asking a third time wouldn't get me anywhere."Your Majesty." The words wouldn't leave me alone. They sat in my chest like a stone all through dinner, all through the long, restless hour I spent lying in that enormous bed staring at the ceiling instead of sleeping. Why would a servant call me that? Why did Kai look like the floor had opened under him?By the time the castle had gone quiet, I'd made up my mind. Nobody was going to answer my questions. Fine. I'd find the answers myself. The halls at night were worse than during the day longer somehow, the shadows between the chandeliers thicker, like the light was too tired to reach all the way to the corners. I kept one hand trailing along the wall so I wouldn't lose my sense of direction, co
Draven's words hadn't finished echoing before I turned on him."What... did you just say?"The playfulness drained out of his face. For the first time since I'd met him, he looked tired. Actually tired, like something heavy had been sitting on him for a very long time.Kai turned so fast it startled me. "Draven."One word. A warning, sharp as a blade.Draven shrugged, but it didn't land the way his shrugs usually did. "What? She deserves one honest answer.""I said enough."I looked between them, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. "No." I stepped in front of Kai before I even decided to move. "No, you don't get to do this again."I pointed at him. "He said you watched me die." My voice cracked. "What does that mean?"Kai said nothing.I laughed, and it came out bitter and broken. "Seriously? Again?" I turned to Draven. "You said it. Explain it."He opened his mouth. Then closed it.And for the first time since I'd met him, Draven actually listened to his brother i
The diary was still on the floor where I'd dropped it.I stared at it for a long time before I made myself move. My hands were shaking so bad it took two tries to pick it up again, like some part of me already knew that once I opened it, I wouldn't be able to close it again and pretend I hadn't seen what was inside.I opened it anyway. The handwriting looked like mine. Not similar. Mine. The same slant, the same way I loop my Y's too big."This isn't possible," I whispered. The next page started with a date that meant nothing to me.Day One.If you're reading this, then we failed again.Don't panic.I know you don't remember me.I am you.My heart slammed once, hard, against my ribs. I laughed this short, broken, nervous sound that didn't feel like it came from me."No," I said, out loud, to an empty room. "No, that's not possible..."I turned the page anyway. I couldn't stop myself. The diary didn't explain anything. It just kept going, like whoever wrote it assumed I already knew e
The old woman's words hung in the air long after she said them."The Bride of the Ninth Life has returned."Nobody moved. Not Kai, Not Draven, Not even the servant. The whole courtyard had turned to stone around me, and I stood in the middle of it, shaking, with no idea why a stranger kneeling on cold marble made me feel like the ground had opened under my feet.Ninth life??What did that even mean?I looked at Kai. His jaw was tight enough to crack. I looked at Draven. For the first time since I'd met him, he wasn't smiling. That scared me more than anything else that had happened tonight."That's enough," Kai said. Quiet. Final. The old woman's head snapped up like she'd been slapped. "Forgive me, my lord. I only..." She didn't finish. She just bowed lower and scrambled back, disappearing into the castle like she couldn't get away fast enough.I was still shaking. I didn't even realize it until Draven noticed. He didn't laugh this time. He didn't make it a joke. He just stepped up
