Diana

I didn’t remember falling asleep, but the whisper of the cool morning breeze filtered in through the open curtains and kissed my cheeks awake.

For a few seconds, I didn’t move.

I lay still, taking in the unfamiliar softness of the pillow beneath me, the steady rhythm of breath I recognized even without opening my eyes.

Wasn’t I in an altar some minutes ago?

Edric.

Then I opened them, and my breath caught.

There was a dip in the bed, but that wasn’t because he was lying beside me. He was seated at the edge of the bed, his elbows on his knees, and face in his palms, deep in contemplation.

The sunlight caught the strands of his dark hair, and the shadows under his eyes made him look like he hadn't slept all night.

I sat up slowly, ignoring the stiffness in my limbs. Trauma has a way of sitting in your body like wet cement.

He looked up the moment I shifted.

His face changed instantly and a flood of worry overtook his previous calmness. “Good morning,” he said, voice low and raspy

DianaMorning had long since passed, but I hadn’t left Edric’s room. He hadn’t either.I sat on the edge of his bed with my knees drawn to my chest, fingers wrapped tightly around the warm mug of deer bone broth he’d insisted I finish. He was pacing now, back and forth, hands raking through his hair like he wanted to tear something out of his skull.“Edric,” I said, interrupting his fifth lap across the floor. “Stop.”He halted, looking at me with a hesitation I didn’t like.“I want to know everything,” I said firmly. He opened his mouth, probably to argue, but I held up a hand.“And I mean everything. If I’m going to be here if you want me to stay here with you…I can’t be blindfolded while walking through fire.”Edric let out a long, uneven breath. “You have every right to ask that.”“Then say it.”His brows furrowed. “Say what?”“That there’ll be no more secrets. From now on, we tell each other everything.”For a second, I thought he would say it. The words were at the tip of hi

EdricSomething was wrong.Ever since I was in that room, I didn’t know how I knew it, only that I did. It wasn’t the usual stir of paranoia or the claw of guilt. This was deeper than that. I could feel it in the very earth, like trouble lingering just beyond the door, staring at me and waiting for me to make a move to latch on.‘She’s in trouble,’ Bane whispered in my chest. His voice was a low snarl beneath my skin. I felt his fur rise inside me, his teeth baring through the marrow of my bones. He was begging to be let out. To hunt.I stopped walking.Muzan was a few paces ahead, already halfway to the edge of the woods. He turned when he heard me halt, his brow creasing. “What is it?”I scanned the forest, my fingers twitching. “Diana is in trouble.”“Yeah? Well, something’s off about these woods too.”Then the wind changed. It carried a scent I didn’t recognize at first. Herbs. Burned sage, ironroot, feverfew. My body locked onto it instinctively, my senses sharpening like a b

DianaThe howling tore through my sleep like claws across my skin.I jolted upright, heart pounding. The cave was still dark, but something was wrong. The wolves were whimpering, and pacing, their ears flattened in fear. My eyes adjusted slowly, and that’s when I saw him.The Alpha wolf.He was down. The mighty white-coated wolf that had watched over me last night now lay sprawled across the ground, his fur stained crimson. His breaths came shallow, labored. One of the younger females was nudging him with her snout, whining. The entire morning air was stained with the desperation of these wolves and an urgency that sprung me to my feet.I scrambled toward them. “What happened?”My voice died in my throat when I saw the man.He was perched on a ledge just outside the cave’s entrance, breathing hard, shoulders slumped like he’d just come from hell and back. His clothes were torn, and blood smeared across his knuckles. His boots were muddy, and one pant leg was shredded. But none o

EdricDiana was gone. Just... gone. And I had myself to blame.I sat in the corner of my room, drowning in the weight of the silence. The candle cast long shadows of furniture around me, reminding me what it was like to be alone with lifelessness.I’d heard her footsteps when she ran. Heard the door slam, and heard the wolves stir from their rest. And still, I didn’t chase her. I couldn’t. It wasn’t worth it…to hold on to something that didn’t want to be.“You look like hell,” Muzan muttered as he stepped inside, shutting the door behind him with more force than necessary.I didn’t answer. What was there to say?“She’s gone,” he added, as though I needed reminding.“I know.” My voice was rough and hollow, scraping my throat raw. I hadn’t spoken since she left, save for the howls I let off into the night, crying and begging for her return. He crossed the room and stood over me, his arms crossed, face tight with frustration. “This is exactly what I was trying to avoid. She should’ve n

DianaI ran.I don’t remember how long. As soon as I saw the door, I opened it, shut it back after me, and just made sure my feet were pushing me forward.I don’t even know if my feet ever really touched the ground, or if I just flew on panic and adrenaline alone. My breath burned in my throat, ragged and loud in the silence of the hallways. Every shadow looked like a hand waiting to grab me. Every creak in the walls sounded like the echo of footsteps chasing me.I couldn't get the image out of my head. That red X.Slashed right through my name like I was nothing more than a sentence someone wanted to be erased.No. I shook my head over and over as I ran. It had to be a mistake. Maybe it wasn’t my name. Maybe it wasn’t even a real family tree. Just another trick, another cruel illusion designed to mess with my mind.Maybe Edric was right and the book I read was indeed breaking my brain. I couldn’t tell for sure. But deep down, I knew better. That mark on my wrist had glowed for a

DianaI sat on the edge of Edric's bed, trying not to let the warmth of our earlier moment cloud my thoughts. That was a lot more difficult than I anticipated it to be.His fingers had just left mine, a touch too lingering, and part of me wanted to lean in again. But I couldn’t let the moment distract me."Edric," I began, voice soft, testing the waters. "That door in the library. The one I told you about. It's real. I know what I saw."He let out a breath, dragging a hand through his dark hair. He looked at me like I’d just told him I saw ghosts. "Diana... not this again. There is no door. We’ve checked. I don’t know what you think you saw, but it wasn’t there.""But it was," I insisted, my fingers curling into fists on my lap. "You know it. I saw you and Muzan talking about it. You said I shouldn’t be alone when I see those places."His gaze snapped to mine, sharp. "You were spying?""I was walking," I retorted. "You weren’t whispering. That’s on you."He pinched the bridge of his

EdricShe was hiding something.I watched her closely, the way her hands twitched around the trap, the way her eyes avoided mine like they’d catch fire if we locked gazes for too long. Diana was usually braver than this. Reckless, even. But tonight, she was shifty. Nervous. And that trap in her hands wasn’t a good sign.“Diana…what exactly are you planning to catch?” I asked quietly, taking a slow step forward. She stiffened, her grip tightening on the metal contraption. “You planning to catch a ghost or something?”“No,” she said quickly…too quickly. “It’s nothing. I just… wanted to try something.”“Try something?” My brow creased. “Like what?”She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. And just like that, the silence turned heavy. It was almost like I could see her resolve not to say anything else. She took a step back, but I followed, gently reaching for the trap. “Diana, give it to me.”“I said it’s fine…”Her voice cracked as I reached further, and she pulled away, but not fa

  • The Cursed Alpha And His Rejected Bride   Chapter fifty-seven

DianaThe book had been sitting on the top shelf for days…thick, dusty, and bound in leather so dark it almost shimmered blue under the candlelight. Its title called out to me, in a way that I could totally resist, but for some reason, didn’t want to help myself. The book screamed, “Run”, but here I was.I had passed over it every time, telling myself I’d get to it later when I was more prepared. When my mind was sharper, less clouded by emotion. But tonight was the night, and the pain in my chest was a testament to just how long and how hard it had been pounding.I reached up and pulled it down, wincing at the weight. It smelled like mildew and something fainter, like ash. I set it gently on the table and opened it with slow hands. The first page bled ink.Not literally, but the script spilled and ran as if freshly poured as if the letters were still alive. I whispered the words as I read, tracing the passage of witches long dead, their curses flung across centuries like poisoned s
