Alpha Kaidon’s POV
As I ran through the forest, I heard heavy footsteps behind me. I was scared to turn back. My breath was reduced to ragged gasps as I ran faster. I had to calm my breath by counting numbers. Suddenly, an eerily hand grabbed my shoulder and spun me around quickly. I tried to see the face of my attacker but their face was blurred. I tried to plead for my life but I couldn’t speak. It was as though my lips had been sealed together. My attacker raised a knife, its blade shimmering in the moonlight. They were pointing the knife at me and their hand began to descend. I tried to push them off but they were too strong. Suddenly, the knife pierced through my chest, into my heart and that was it. That was the end. Everything suddenly went black. **************************************************************************** I woke up with a start, drenched in my own sweat. It took me a moment to realize it was a dream. It was so real I thought I had really died and had woken up in the afterlife. It’s been two weeks since the witch, Ravenna, was killed and from that night, I had been having strange dreams, or nightmares. Someone was always trying to kill me in all my dreams. I could tell it was a female from the long hair and long, sharp nails. I spent days wondering if the witch's curse was real, although I had initially dismissed it as a mere joke. Just then I heard a knock on my door and before I could even ask the person to come in, the door was pushed open. Only one person had the effontry to do that. “Good mor…oh you look a mess, bro,” Beta Drake said as he walked in. He only called me Alpha when we were out with other people but when alone together, he called me casually. “You wouldn't understand,” I said to him as I pushed the bed covers off my body. “Another nightmare?” He asked me, concern etched in his face and I nodded. “I'm beginning to think that witch's curse is real,” he said. “What do we do then?” I asked. “The only solution to this is finding your fated mate and eliminating her before she even has a chance to,” Drake said. I nodded in agreement. If indeed fated mate would be the end of me, I'd rather have her killed first than wait for her to find me and end my life. “I agree. We have to find her before she finds me,” I said. “Okay; I’ll send men to scout through the town to find her. But how do we do that?” Drake said, scratching his head to the last part. “I'll have to conduct this search myself soni would use my powers to identify my mate. So this is what we would do: I'll send for every she-wolf in town and have them examined. Immediately, I find her, I'll have her singled out and eliminated,” I said. “But what if you don't find her in our own pack? What makes you from another pack?” Drake asked. “I highly doubt that that's possible. But if it is, well examine every she-wolf that comes to our pack from henceforth,” I added. “Alright then, I'll have the messengers spread the news,” Drake said before leaving the room. That evening, the word was spread. All the ladies were invited to the gathering hall the following day. The following day, the gathering Hall was filled with she-wolves of different sizes and Heights. As I strode through the gathering hall, answering multiple greetings at the same time, my eyes scanned the room. The she-wolves of my pack stood before me, waiting in confusion to know why I had gathered them but I said nothing. As I made made way through the crowd, I could feel strongly within me that I was merely wasting my time. I wasn't feeling anything while looking at them - no connection, no sense of recognition whatsoever. It was as if I was walking through an empty room. As I reached the end of the ball where Beta Drake stood, I said to him, “She's not here. I didn't feel anything with these ones.” “Then it's a good thing. Now we know that the enemy isn't close by but we would be on the lookout for any new she-wolf who comes into our pack,” He promised. I shot him a grateful look and before leaving, I said, “Dismiss them. They're already starting to think I called them here because I'm going to marry one of them.” I heard Beta Drake chuckle before I got out of sight. Days passed I was still getting strange nightmares that tormented me. But I had no regrets killing the witch. She deserved it. One day, I was working at the office when I heard a knock on the door. “Alpha Kaidon, a letter came in for you,” beta Drake said. I looked up to see him pointing the letter towards me. “Who is it from?” I asked “It seems to be from your best friend, Alpha Kris. It has the royal seal of the Blue Moon Pack,” Beta Drake responded. I immediately took the letter for him in excitement. Alpha Kris was my childhood friend and it had been a while since I heard from him. I opened the letter and began to read it. “Dear Kaidon, It's been far too long since we last spoke and that's why I'm eager to reconnect. I'm turning a year older and I'd be honored if you could join me at Blue Moon Pack to celebrate. The festivities would run for a few days and I'm looking to sharing some laughs and stories. Can't wait to see you brother. Kris.” A smile appeared on my face. I looked up and Drake and said, “Pack me a bag. I have a journey to embark on.”I searched everywhere. Every town, every market, every rogue-infested border. Nothing. She was gone. And every damn night, I would find myself out there—barefoot, shirtless, drunk on regret—staring at the moon, whispering like a lunatic.“Please,” I’d beg, my knees in the dirt, my hands raised like a madman. “Moon goddess, I know I don’t deserve her. I know I’ve failed her. But please, just let me find her again. Let me tell her I love her. Let me… let me make things right.”Sometimes I’d talk to the spirit of Ravenna, the very witch I killed.“I was young… I didn’t know,” I’d mutter under my breath like a man possessed. “You were never the threat. It was the sickness, the fear. I thought I was protecting my people… I didn't mean to hurt you. Please, if your soul is out there, let her come back to me. Or at least let me find her.”No answer. Not even the wind bothered to whisper back. For a year, I didn’t sleep right. I barely ate. The pack thought I was losing my mind. Maybe I was.L
I didn’t stop running that night, not when the moon turned red. Not when my lungs started to burn. Not even when I felt like my heart was about to shatter into tiny, useless pieces.Kaidon had helped me escape. He told me not to come back.He said he’d find me.But he didn’t.Not for three whole days.By the time I collapsed in the mountains, I was already half dead. I don’t even remember falling. All I remember was the biting wind and the sound of my own sobbing echoing through the trees. Then nothing. When I opened my eyes again, it wasn’t the cold I felt anymore; it was warmth. Warm sheets. A fire crackling nearby. A cup of something that smelled like ginger by the bedside. I blinked a few times before my vision cleared.“Ah, finally awake,” a soft voice said.It was a woman. Mid-forties, maybe. Her grey-streaked hair was braided down her back. She had these kind eyes that reminded me of... well, of how I wished a mother would look.“You were out cold when my husband found you,” sh
It was past midnight when Elder Loin came knocking at my door. I knew it had to be something serious. The old man never left his quarters at that hour unless the walls were falling.I sat up from my desk and stared at him. “You couldn’t sleep either?” I asked with a tired chuckle. He didn’t return the smile.Instead, he stepped in and closed the door behind him. “We need to talk, Alpha. Privately.”That made my heart sink.“Sit,” I said, pointing at the seat across from me.But he remained standing. “Drake. He’s pushing for Lila’s execution.”My chest tightened.“What?” I whispered, blinking as if I’d misheard.“Drake went to the other elders,” he continued. “Told them she’s a threat. He reminded them that she’s the girl from the prophecy; that the curse is already playing out and you’re blinded by your feelings. He convinced them. They voted for her execution.”I stood from my seat immediately, fists clenched at my sides.“When?” I asked.“Three nights from now. They want to do it du
At first, I thought I was imagining it. The way my limbs would suddenly feel… weightless, like I could carry a boulder or sprint faster than the wind. It started the day Kaidon kissed me, and since then, every time he touched me, even if it was just his hand brushing against mine, I felt something inside me shift, like a flame catching fire in a dark room… like strength I never had before.“Kaidon,” I had asked him one evening as we sat under the moonlit sky, his arms wrapped around me from behind, “why do I feel... stronger whenever I’m around you?”He chuckled and kissed the top of my head. “Love,” he said. “Love makes people brave. Love makes people stronger.”I remember wanting to believe him. I did. But it wasn’t just strength. It was something else… something darker. It started as a whisper in my head…Hurt him.I’d flinch every time it came, like someone had poured ice water down my spine. The first time it happened, I was in the kitchen, preparing his favorite tea. I was hummi
The council hall was thick with the scent of incense and authority. Every elder, every warrior leader, every man who swore loyalty to the Moonstone Pack, sat in the curved circle of chairs. I stood at the center of it all. This was going to be a meeting like no other!I was going to tell them!“Gentlemen,” I began, letting my voice echo across the room like the wind before a storm. “Thank you for coming.”“Alpha,” Elder Marcus said, giving a short nod. “Is it something urgent?”I folded my arms. “A few things, actually. We need to talk about security. Patrol shifts, border strength… and something else.”“Border strength?” Elder Joseph leaned forward. “We haven’t had a rogue breach in a long time. Our borders are secure.”“I know,” I replied. “But there’s been too much internal drama lately. People turning against one another. Lies, sabotage, even attempted murder. It weakens us. Once our enemies find out that we're not united, they will strike. We can't wait for them to do that before
Something had come up earlier that day.Something I wasn’t proud of.Another nightmare… the same one that haunted my sleep for months now. The same faceless wolf chasing me across a field of fire and ash, until I fell… and she stared down at me with those hollow, haunting eyes, then turned and vanished into the mist. Every time I woke up, gasping for breath, soaked in sweat, like death had brushed past me. But this time... it felt stronger. Realer. Like the wolf was trying to show me something. Warn me.So I canceled dinner with Lila.I told her it was a meeting with the council. She didn’t question it, even though I saw the flash of disappointment in her eyes before she masked it with a soft smile and nodded.“Okay, Alpha,” she had said quietly. “Maybe another time.”I wanted to reach out, to tell her the truth. But how could I? How do you tell the woman who smiles when you walk into a room, who holds your hand like it's worth something… that you’re cursed to die at her hands? No. Th
