"Alpha, I think we've found the source of the mysterious disease that has afflicted our pack," my brother, Beta Drake said. I set aside the documents I was reviewing and gave him my full attention. "Really? Go on," I asked. "My men and I embarked on an investigation like you suggested and we discovered that there is an unauthorized presence in our pack who we believe is responsible for the outbreak," he answered. I leaned forward, my interest piqued. "Who is this person and why are they linked to this outbreak?" I asked. Beta Drake's expression turned somber, causing me to worry. "The person in question is a witch, Alpha." My eyes narrowed and I could feel the rage coursing through my veins. "How did a witch manage to infiltrate our pack without being detected? How did this happen?" I asked, my blood boiling. "I'm not sure about that, Alpha. She probably got help from the inside but I doubt anyone would be foolish enough to risk their lives by aiding a witch," Beta Drake said. "Bring her to me," I said to Beta Drake. He nodded and turned to leave but before he could reach the door, I stopped him. "Do you know how long she has been hiding in our pack?" I asked him. "Not really but from what my men and I gathered, Ravenna has been here for a couple of months, let's say two months," he replied. Thinking about what he said, I realized that the outbreak had indeed begun around the time of Ravenna's arrival. My long-laid conviction has been proven right; witches bring misfortunes and their presence spells trouble. "Okay then, why don't you bring Ravenna in? It is high time Ravenna and I had a...talk," I said, my voice dripping with malice. Beta Drake nodded and finally left the room without a second interruption. I sat back in my seat with clenched jaws, trying to suppress my anger. The mere mention of witches could start up a fire in my heart. For years, I've resented them, which makes me eliminate them whenever I had the chance. But the fact that one had been hiding under my nose for so long without my knowledge made me question my effectiveness as the Alpha of the Moonstone Pack. As I sat there seething in anger, I heard the door open and I looked up to see Beta Drake escorting a woman into the room. She was tall, with long grey hair and piercing grey eyes that seemed to bore into my very soul. "Ravenna..." I said getting up from my seat. "Alpha Kaidon," she replied with a smile on her face. How could she smile despite knowing what her fate would be eventually? I thought "I can see you're the reason behind the strange disease in my pack," I said. "Yes I am. I'm simply getting revenge for the death of my people whom you've cruelly murdered in cold blood in the last years," she said, the smile still etched on her face. "And I must say, it was quite fun to watch your people suffer and die just the way my people did," she added with a smile before I could even speak. Her smile only fueled my anger and I knew she knew that. "You'll pay for what you've done. I promise," I said, snarling. For a minute, she was quiet, as if she was scared of what I was going to do to her. But to my surprise, she suddenly burst into laughter, causing me and Beta Drake to exchange glances in confusion. "Oh, I'm shaking in my boots, Alpha. I'm scared of what you're going to do to me," she said, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Oh you should be, Ravenna. You should be cause I'll make you regret ever stepping your foot into my pack," I said, clenching my fists. Without another word said, I ordered Beta Drake to take her back to the dungeon until I decided her fate. Later that evening, I held a meeting with the elders of the pack and we decided on a date for the execution. "We shouldn't permit the witch to see the rise of another day. Why don't we execute her tomorrow afternoon?" Elder Loin said. All the other elders nodded on agreement and I had no choice but to agree with them. I had the guards set up the execution stand. She was to be executed by hanging and then her body was to be cremated. I ordered the Messengers to go around and spread the news about the execution so that everyone would witness the execution of the pack's greatest enemy. The afternoon of the following day, all of those who had not been afflicted with the disease yet, attended the execution. Ravenna was brought out from the dungeon and was placed on the execution stand. "Everyone, we're all gathered today to witness the execution of Moonstone's worst enemy, a witch. We all know how witches bring misfortunes and should not be spared. Before we execute her, let's find out if she has any last words," I said before turning to face Ravenna with a smirk on my face. "Of course, I have something to say. In fact, I have a gift for you, Alpha Kaidon," she said. Without waiting for me to ask, she continued, "A curse actually, one that would change your life forever." "Oh please, you think a curse can harm me. I am the strongest wolf and the Alpha of the pack," I said, my voice scornful. A smile broke out on her face as she said, "You'll meet your demise in the hands of your fated mate. You'll both fall deeply in love but she will strike without knowing your true bond. Only after eliminating you will she realize that you were meant to be." As she spoke, the skies darkened and a loud thunderclap shook the air.I searched everywhere. Every town, every market, every rogue-infested border. Nothing. She was gone. And every damn night, I would find myself out there—barefoot, shirtless, drunk on regret—staring at the moon, whispering like a lunatic.“Please,” I’d beg, my knees in the dirt, my hands raised like a madman. “Moon goddess, I know I don’t deserve her. I know I’ve failed her. But please, just let me find her again. Let me tell her I love her. Let me… let me make things right.”Sometimes I’d talk to the spirit of Ravenna, the very witch I killed.“I was young… I didn’t know,” I’d mutter under my breath like a man possessed. “You were never the threat. It was the sickness, the fear. I thought I was protecting my people… I didn't mean to hurt you. Please, if your soul is out there, let her come back to me. Or at least let me find her.”No answer. Not even the wind bothered to whisper back. For a year, I didn’t sleep right. I barely ate. The pack thought I was losing my mind. Maybe I was.L
I didn’t stop running that night, not when the moon turned red. Not when my lungs started to burn. Not even when I felt like my heart was about to shatter into tiny, useless pieces.Kaidon had helped me escape. He told me not to come back.He said he’d find me.But he didn’t.Not for three whole days.By the time I collapsed in the mountains, I was already half dead. I don’t even remember falling. All I remember was the biting wind and the sound of my own sobbing echoing through the trees. Then nothing. When I opened my eyes again, it wasn’t the cold I felt anymore; it was warmth. Warm sheets. A fire crackling nearby. A cup of something that smelled like ginger by the bedside. I blinked a few times before my vision cleared.“Ah, finally awake,” a soft voice said.It was a woman. Mid-forties, maybe. Her grey-streaked hair was braided down her back. She had these kind eyes that reminded me of... well, of how I wished a mother would look.“You were out cold when my husband found you,” sh
It was past midnight when Elder Loin came knocking at my door. I knew it had to be something serious. The old man never left his quarters at that hour unless the walls were falling.I sat up from my desk and stared at him. “You couldn’t sleep either?” I asked with a tired chuckle. He didn’t return the smile.Instead, he stepped in and closed the door behind him. “We need to talk, Alpha. Privately.”That made my heart sink.“Sit,” I said, pointing at the seat across from me.But he remained standing. “Drake. He’s pushing for Lila’s execution.”My chest tightened.“What?” I whispered, blinking as if I’d misheard.“Drake went to the other elders,” he continued. “Told them she’s a threat. He reminded them that she’s the girl from the prophecy; that the curse is already playing out and you’re blinded by your feelings. He convinced them. They voted for her execution.”I stood from my seat immediately, fists clenched at my sides.“When?” I asked.“Three nights from now. They want to do it du
At first, I thought I was imagining it. The way my limbs would suddenly feel… weightless, like I could carry a boulder or sprint faster than the wind. It started the day Kaidon kissed me, and since then, every time he touched me, even if it was just his hand brushing against mine, I felt something inside me shift, like a flame catching fire in a dark room… like strength I never had before.“Kaidon,” I had asked him one evening as we sat under the moonlit sky, his arms wrapped around me from behind, “why do I feel... stronger whenever I’m around you?”He chuckled and kissed the top of my head. “Love,” he said. “Love makes people brave. Love makes people stronger.”I remember wanting to believe him. I did. But it wasn’t just strength. It was something else… something darker. It started as a whisper in my head…Hurt him.I’d flinch every time it came, like someone had poured ice water down my spine. The first time it happened, I was in the kitchen, preparing his favorite tea. I was hummi
The council hall was thick with the scent of incense and authority. Every elder, every warrior leader, every man who swore loyalty to the Moonstone Pack, sat in the curved circle of chairs. I stood at the center of it all. This was going to be a meeting like no other!I was going to tell them!“Gentlemen,” I began, letting my voice echo across the room like the wind before a storm. “Thank you for coming.”“Alpha,” Elder Marcus said, giving a short nod. “Is it something urgent?”I folded my arms. “A few things, actually. We need to talk about security. Patrol shifts, border strength… and something else.”“Border strength?” Elder Joseph leaned forward. “We haven’t had a rogue breach in a long time. Our borders are secure.”“I know,” I replied. “But there’s been too much internal drama lately. People turning against one another. Lies, sabotage, even attempted murder. It weakens us. Once our enemies find out that we're not united, they will strike. We can't wait for them to do that before
Something had come up earlier that day.Something I wasn’t proud of.Another nightmare… the same one that haunted my sleep for months now. The same faceless wolf chasing me across a field of fire and ash, until I fell… and she stared down at me with those hollow, haunting eyes, then turned and vanished into the mist. Every time I woke up, gasping for breath, soaked in sweat, like death had brushed past me. But this time... it felt stronger. Realer. Like the wolf was trying to show me something. Warn me.So I canceled dinner with Lila.I told her it was a meeting with the council. She didn’t question it, even though I saw the flash of disappointment in her eyes before she masked it with a soft smile and nodded.“Okay, Alpha,” she had said quietly. “Maybe another time.”I wanted to reach out, to tell her the truth. But how could I? How do you tell the woman who smiles when you walk into a room, who holds your hand like it's worth something… that you’re cursed to die at her hands? No. Th
