"Alpha, I think we've found the source of the mysterious disease that has afflicted our pack," my brother, Beta Drake said. I set aside the documents I was reviewing and gave him my full attention. "Really? Go on," I asked. "My men and I embarked on an investigation like you suggested and we discovered that there is an unauthorized presence in our pack who we believe is responsible for the outbreak," he answered. I leaned forward, my interest piqued. "Who is this person and why are they linked to this outbreak?" I asked. Beta Drake's expression turned somber, causing me to worry. "The person in question is a witch, Alpha." My eyes narrowed and I could feel the rage coursing through my veins. "How did a witch manage to infiltrate our pack without being detected? How did this happen?" I asked, my blood boiling. "I'm not sure about that, Alpha. She probably got help from the inside but I doubt anyone would be foolish enough to risk their lives by aiding a witch," Beta Drake said. "Bring her to me," I said to Beta Drake. He nodded and turned to leave but before he could reach the door, I stopped him. "Do you know how long she has been hiding in our pack?" I asked him. "Not really but from what my men and I gathered, Ravenna has been here for a couple of months, let's say two months," he replied. Thinking about what he said, I realized that the outbreak had indeed begun around the time of Ravenna's arrival. My long-laid conviction has been proven right; witches bring misfortunes and their presence spells trouble. "Okay then, why don't you bring Ravenna in? It is high time Ravenna and I had a...talk," I said, my voice dripping with malice. Beta Drake nodded and finally left the room without a second interruption. I sat back in my seat with clenched jaws, trying to suppress my anger. The mere mention of witches could start up a fire in my heart. For years, I've resented them, which makes me eliminate them whenever I had the chance. But the fact that one had been hiding under my nose for so long without my knowledge made me question my effectiveness as the Alpha of the Moonstone Pack. As I sat there seething in anger, I heard the door open and I looked up to see Beta Drake escorting a woman into the room. She was tall, with long grey hair and piercing grey eyes that seemed to bore into my very soul. "Ravenna..." I said getting up from my seat. "Alpha Kaidon," she replied with a smile on her face. How could she smile despite knowing what her fate would be eventually? I thought "I can see you're the reason behind the strange disease in my pack," I said. "Yes I am. I'm simply getting revenge for the death of my people whom you've cruelly murdered in cold blood in the last years," she said, the smile still etched on her face. "And I must say, it was quite fun to watch your people suffer and die just the way my people did," she added with a smile before I could even speak. Her smile only fueled my anger and I knew she knew that. "You'll pay for what you've done. I promise," I said, snarling. For a minute, she was quiet, as if she was scared of what I was going to do to her. But to my surprise, she suddenly burst into laughter, causing me and Beta Drake to exchange glances in confusion. "Oh, I'm shaking in my boots, Alpha. I'm scared of what you're going to do to me," she said, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Oh you should be, Ravenna. You should be cause I'll make you regret ever stepping your foot into my pack," I said, clenching my fists. Without another word said, I ordered Beta Drake to take her back to the dungeon until I decided her fate. Later that evening, I held a meeting with the elders of the pack and we decided on a date for the execution. "We shouldn't permit the witch to see the rise of another day. Why don't we execute her tomorrow afternoon?" Elder Loin said. All the other elders nodded on agreement and I had no choice but to agree with them. I had the guards set up the execution stand. She was to be executed by hanging and then her body was to be cremated. I ordered the Messengers to go around and spread the news about the execution so that everyone would witness the execution of the pack's greatest enemy. The afternoon of the following day, all of those who had not been afflicted with the disease yet, attended the execution. Ravenna was brought out from the dungeon and was placed on the execution stand. "Everyone, we're all gathered today to witness the execution of Moonstone's worst enemy, a witch. We all know how witches bring misfortunes and should not be spared. Before we execute her, let's find out if she has any last words," I said before turning to face Ravenna with a smirk on my face. "Of course, I have something to say. In fact, I have a gift for you, Alpha Kaidon," she said. Without waiting for me to ask, she continued, "A curse actually, one that would change your life forever." "Oh please, you think a curse can harm me. I am the strongest wolf and the Alpha of the pack," I said, my voice scornful. A smile broke out on her face as she said, "You'll meet your demise in the hands of your fated mate. You'll both fall deeply in love but she will strike without knowing your true bond. Only after eliminating you will she realize that you were meant to be." As she spoke, the skies darkened and a loud thunderclap shook the air.The fire crackled in the pit before us, warm against the chill of the mountain breeze. Laughter rippled through the circle of alphas—too much wine, too many old stories, and just the right amount of ego. The moon hung high and heavy above us, bathing the clearing in silver. I leaned back in my seat, watching the flames dance, trying to let go of the nagging weight in my chest. Something felt off, but I couldn’t place it. Not yet. Alpha Cunha let out a grunt and rose from his seat. “I need to stretch my legs,” he said, brushing imaginary lint from his trousers. Alpha Ulrich snorted into his goblet. “Stretch your legs or your manhood on one of Kaidon’s maids?” The others erupted into laughter, even I cracked a smile. I should have expected that from Ulrich. His tongue was as sharp as his claws. Cunha rolled his eyes. “You fools really think every time I walk away, it’s for a woman?” “Don’t act like it’s not true,” Alpha Linden chuckled, raising a goblet toward him. “If it wears a
I had always hated the way everyone looked at Kaidon, like he was some gift from the Moon Goddess. Like he was born to lead while the rest of us were just meant to follow. Even though he was older, I was smarter and sharper. But our parents, fools that they were, picked him. It was always him. Kaidon, the blessed one. Kaidon, the strong one. Kaidon, the future of Moonstone. I’d smiled through it, stood by him, played the loyal brother. But deep down, I’d been planning my day. And tonight felt like the perfect start. The party was in full swing. The ballroom was noisy with laughter, drinks clinking, wolves mingling like we weren’t all just pretending to like each other. Kaidon had invited every Alpha he was on good terms with… everyone but Kris. That was surprising. As always, he was the center of attention, dressed like a king, his silver hair catching the lights. He was too busy showing off to even notice I wasn’t around. Good. I slipped away from the crowd and found Alpha Cunh
Sara’s lips moved, but I didn’t hear a word she was saying. It was not because she wasn’t loud enough, but because I had stopped listening. Somewhere between the sound of their laughter and Alpha Kaidon’s voice dragging me through the mud in front of his alpha friends, I had shut down. I dropped the tray I was holding, not caring that it almost landed on my foot. The metallic clatter it made was sharp, loud, and for once, it felt louder than Sara’s constant commands. “Lila!” she barked behind me as I turned around and walked out of the hall. “Lila, I am still talking to you! Come back here!” I didn’t stop. I didn’t even flinch. The few maids who stood nearby stared at me like I had just grown two heads. I heard one of them gasp and whisper, “She just ignored the head maid… she’s done for.” Maybe I was, but I didn't care, really. The cold night air slapped my cheeks as I stepped out. I welcomed it. I needed it. But it didn’t help me breathe the way I hoped it would. It didn’t
The hall echoed with laughter as I raised a glass to peace. That was what we were celebrating tonight: peace in Moonstone Pack. No threats, no bloodshed, no tension hanging in the air. Just peace. My closest allies were here. Alpha Cunha sat to my left, lounging like he owned the place… as usual. Beside him was Grayson, the loudmouth of the Red Fang Pack, always ready with a joke and a drink. Then there was Ulric, who barely ever smiled, but tonight he was talking. That meant he was in a good mood. It wasn’t every day you saw Ulric talk and laugh. “I swear, Kaidon,” Cunha said, nudging my arm, “you’ve become soft in your old age.” “I’m thirty,” I said, rolling my eyes. “That’s ancient for someone who used to snap necks for breathing wrong,” Grayson added with a chuckle. “Not my fault peace looks good on me,” I muttered, sipping from my goblet. We were just settling into another round of stories about that rogue ambush two years ago when the doors creaked open and a few maids wa
I closed the door to Tasha’s room behind me and leaned against it, my heart thudding faster than I wanted it to. Drake’s voice still rang in my ears. "Watch your back, girl." I swallowed hard and rubbed my arms like I could chase away the cold crawling over my skin. The man was serious. I could feel it in the way his eyes darkened when he spoke. I knew better than to brush it off. He’d already hurt me once, and I was still dealing with the aftermath of that attack. The alpha may have made me his personal maid, may have punished the ones who hurt me... but that didn’t mean I was safe. Not really. Not from Drake. Not from someone who wanted me gone so badly. I sat down on the bed and stared at the wall for a while. My head hurt. My chest felt tight. I couldn’t even tell if it was from the fever I had picked up earlier or the fear tying knots in my stomach. Later that evening, Loraine came by with a small basket of food and a soft smile on her face. She always looked so calm, so su
I woke up that morning with my head pounding like someone had drummed on my skull all night. My throat was dry, my back ached, and I could barely lift my arm. I groaned and sat up slowly, clutching my belly like that would somehow stop the strange cramps. Everything hurt. But I knew better than to stay in bed, especially not today. The Alpha was hosting some of his old friends, and everyone in the pack house was moving around like bees in a burning hive. No one… maybe excluding the alpha and Loraine… would have cared that I was sick. If anything, that would only get me more work and more insults. Just as I finished dragging on my faded gown and tying my hair into a low bun, Sara barged into the room like she owned the entire universe. “Well, Sleeping Beauty finally woke up,” she said with a crooked smile. “I was about to send the guards to drag you out of bed.” “I’m not feeling too well,” I murmured, trying not to sound like I was complaining. She clicked her tongue. “Aw, poor l
