LOGINThe Alpha King had died.
The news spread like wildfire across the four Packs of the Republic; The South Pack, The White-Fur pack, The Black-claw Pack and The Blood-Rose Pack. I was serving breakfast to Gunner when I overheard Alpha Randolph, his father, breaking the news to him. “This is our chance, Gunner,” Alpha Randolph tapped him on the shoulder. “If all turns out well, you might just become the next Alpha king.” Alpha Gunner was strong. I heard when he was ten, he took down ten Beta soldiers all by himself without breaking a sweat. He was more than qualified to be Alpha king. At least, that was what everyone believes. In a nation of werewolves such as the Republic, the Alpha king was the most powerful and revered person. He's like a president, but we werewolves simply call him the Alpha king. “Would Alpha Leonidas be in attendance at the new moon festival?” Alpha Gunner asked, worried creases forming on his face. Alpha Leonidas. Pack leader of the Blood-Rose Pack. I've heard rumors about him. He's the most hated and feared Alpha in the Republic. Words had it that he lives outside the Republic in isolation with his Pack because of his curse. I still haven't got the full gist about him, but from the little I gathered, Alpha Leonidas was a force to be reckoned with. “I spoke with the other pack leaders,” Alpha Randolph continued. “I lost the vote against inviting him to the festival. We have decided that all pack leaders must be present at the festival, Leonidas included.” Alpha Gunner didn't like this. “That bastard. I hate him with every fibre of my being.” Out of nowhere, I accidentally spilled Alpha Gunner's tea on his lap. I covered my mouth with my hands, my body shaking in fear. “I-I'm sorry—” Alpha Gunner didn't let me finish. His big hand connected to my face, smacking me down to the floor. “Pathetic,” he spat on me and walked out of the dining hall. Alpha Randolph took one good look at me, then ordered. “What are you whimpering for? Clean up this mess!” “Yes, Alpha Randolph.” I crawled to the table and began cleaning up the tea I spilled. Just then, the door swung open and Beatrice stepped in. Beatrice was the South Pack's Luna. Just like her son, she was proud and intimidating. She hated anyone who was beneath her. It's clear to note that she hated me as much as she hated anyone else and would find every possible means to bully me. When Beatrice saw me cleaning up the mess I made, she wrinkled her nose in disgust much like her son. “Lazy girl,” she snapped, kicking me in my abdomen. “Look at all these wastes. You're so clumsy.” The pains sapped through me, but I endured it. My body had grown accustomed to Alpha Gunner's regular beatings that Beatrice's kicks didn't land that much weight. Beatrice turned to her husband. “I saw Gunner on my way out. He looks livid.” “He's just mad Leonidas would attend the new moon festival,” Alpha Randolph replied. “Have you lost your mind?” Beatrice exclaimed. “We will be hosting the new moon festival. I won't welcome Leonidas under my roof.” “We don't have a choice, Beatrice,” Alpha Randolph sighed. “This is direct orders from the council. We must choose a new Alpha king from among the four packs. Leonidas must be in attendance.” Beatrice grumbled. I finished cleaning my mess and exited the dining area. On my way out, I bumped into Alpha Gunner. He had been waiting for me outside the dining chamber. Before I could make a move, he grabbed me by my throat and pulled me close. “Come with me,” he growled. I swallowed. Am I in trouble? * * * * Alpha Gunner rolled his massive body off me, panting like a wild dog. Long beads of sweat trickled down his muscular back as he stood up from the bed and walked to the open window. I remained sprawled on the bed, my body aching in pain. He had spent the last two hours, fucking me like an animal in heat. Today, he was more brutal than other times. I had never seen him this angry before. It was as if he was channeling all his hate into his cock. I had already lost count of how many times he had cum inside me. It doesn't matter any more. I was just glad it was over. Curling myself into a small ball, I sniffed while holding back my tears. There were deep claw marks all over my body. He was just too rough. Alpha Gunner ran his hands over his sweating face, his expression tight. “There, I feel better now.” I said nothing. I slowly sat up on the bed, my back turned to him, my eyes lifeless. Alpha Gunner wandered over to me, his eyes glassy. “I'm sure you're aware of what's going on, bitch.” I was too weak to reply but I nodded. “Good,” he grabbed my cheeks with one hand and squeezed it tight. “Now that I've released my frustration, it's time we have a talk.” I swallowed, prepared to take anything. Gunner began, his voice as cold as ice. "Up until now, you've kept your goddamn mouth shut. You haven't revealed to anyone that I'm your mate. That makes me glad.” He paused, a cruel smile playing on his lips. “Soon, I'm going to become Alpha king. In order to qualify, I must find myself a Luna. There's no way in hell I'll make someone as weak and ugly as you are, my Luna." My heart spasms. I could see where this was leading to but I remained silent. “In that regard, I will reject you and break the mate bond between us,” Alpha Gunner said. I sniffed. But deep inside, I was rejoicing. “Okay. Do as you wish.” He released my cheeks and stood to his full height. “Kylie, I Alpha Gunner rejects you as my mate!” I bit my lips so hard I could taste blood. “I… I accept your rejection.” “Excellent,” Alpha Gunner then snarled at me. “Now get out of my sight.” I picked up my dress on the floor and walked naked out of his room. He wandered over to his inbuilt bar cabinet and mixed himself a drink. Not once did he turn to look at me. But suddenly, I stopped at the doorway, clutching my dress tightly to my chest. I could feel my heart racing. “Why do you hate me so much?” I asked. The question had come out of nowhere, like a second thought spilling out of my mouth. Alpha Gunner turned sharply and stared at me like I was a crate of rotten eggs. "What was that?" I shivered at the harsh note in his tone but my voice rang out again. "Why do you hate me so much?"KYLIE’S POVThe doors opened fully, and we were led back into the Council Hall. The moment I stepped through the threshold, the noise hit me—low murmurs, shifting chairs, the scrape of boots against stone.Every alpha in the room straightened, their eyes snapping toward us with anticipation.Their mates had returned.I scanned the hall instinctively. And then I saw him.Leonidas stood exactly where I had left him, his dark gaze locked onto me as if the rest of the room had faded away. For a second, everything else blurred—the council, the packs, the tension thick in the air.My chest felt too tight to breathe. The Head of the Council rose slowly, clearing his throat. The murmurs died instantly.“The first selection,” he announced solemnly, “has been completed.”Every eye in the hall sharpened.“Only the mates of worthy Lunas may proceed,” he continued, “The first alpha eligible to continue his campaign for Alpha King...”A pause. Then he announced, “Alpha Gunner of the South Pack.”A
KYLIE’S POVElena lifted her walking stick and tapped it once against the stone floor, silencing every whisper.“The ritual is simple,” she said, turning toward the sphere. “Each of you will step forward, one at a time, and place both hands upon the Sphere of Kings.”Everyone exchanged glances."The sphere will look into the truth of you," she paused, her sharp eyes holding each of us in turn. “If you are worthy, it will glow with a light that acknowledges your spirit. If you are not, it will remain dark. And the path forward for your mate will end here.”Which means rejection. “Those rejected will be escorted out immediately,” Elena added. “Their mates will be disqualified from the selection.”A heavy silence settled over the eight of us. I quickly took them in. Four, like Elara and me, were the chosen mates of the alpha heirs from the Great Packs of the Republic. The other four were from smaller, allied packs—random candidates whose alphas had thrown their names into the fray, hopi
THIRD POV:The silence in the alcove stretched as Gunner’s confession settled over Randolph. He slowly lifted a hand and rubbed his temples, as if pushing back a rising headache in his head. “Does Leonidas know?” Randolph asked grimly. “Does he know she was your fated mate?”Gunner’s shoulder lifted in a ragged shrug. “I have no idea. And I don’t care. The only thing that matters is getting her back.”Rudolph’s control snapped.“Getting her back?” Randolph snarled. In one swift motion, he seized Gunner by the shoulders, his grip bruising, and shook him hard. “You rejected her! You threw away the Moon Goddess’s gift because she didn’t suit your pride! She is gone. The bond is broken. She belongs to another pack, another alpha."He paused, forcing Gunner to look him in the eye. "Chasing her now doesn’t make you look strong, Gunner. It makes you look weak. All you’re doing now is humiliating yourself. You’re going to look pathetic in front of the council, in front of the packs!”He ga
Back in the council hall, the pack leaders were dismissed for a short recess. Alphas stood in small clusters, speaking in low tones, while others paced alone, their gazes flicking again and again toward the sealed doors that had swallowed their mates.Waiting had never felt this heavy.Along a corridor near the edge of the hall, Doris moved quietly, her mind racing with thoughts.Everything was unfolding exactly as she had plotted. All Doris needed was for Kylie to fail publicly. If Kylie failed the first selection, the Blood-Rose Pack would lose faith in their so-called Luna. Whispers and doubt would rot the pack from within. And Leonidas would have no one to blame but the woman he chose to be his mate.Doris’s lips curved faintly in a cold smirk. He would hate her for it. Or worse—he would regret her.Either way, Kylie would fall. She rounded a corner, already imagining the aftermath, when a sharp sound interrupted her thoughts.SMACK!Doris froze, her senses sharpening. KYLIE’S POVFor a moment, all I could do was stare at Elara.Friends? Before I could answer her, a low sound echoed through the hall. It was the signal to move. The Head of the Council raised his hand, and the guards stepped aside.“This way,” one of them ordered. The moment passed. Elara straightened and gave me a small, encouraging nod. Whatever answer I might have given would have to wait.Together, the women chosen as mates began to walk toward the dark doorway.I took one last glance over my shoulder.Leonidas was watching me with good faith as if he already believed I would come back to him. That thought carried me forward. As we crossed the threshold, a chill slid across my skin. The door shut behind us with a heavy thud, sealing us in.And then I saw it.At the center of the room stood a raised stone platform. Resting upon it was a perfect sphere, glowing like captured moonlight. It pulsed softly and slowly. As if it were breathing. The women around me murmured in unease.“Wh
KYLIE’S POV:Elara straightened, her posture shifting subtly. The room seemed to lean toward her as she spoke.“Then it is decided,” she announced calmly, her voice carrying effortlessly across the hall. “Kylie has made her choice. She has chosen Alpha Leonidas as her mate.”She paused, her gaze sweeping the council. “She does not belong to anyone.”Something in my chest loosened at those words, as if a final chain had snapped.Gunner snarled, stepping forward despite himself. “You don’t get to decide that,” he spat. “You’re not the judge here. Leonidas is a thief, and you know it. He stole her.”Elara turned to face him at last, her expression hardening.“Your runaway slave,” she said coolly, “is not coming back to you. And that is final.” She lifted her chin fearlessly. “As your mate, and as the future Luna of the South Pack, I advise we remove ourselves from this matter before you embarrass yourself further.”Her words landed like a verdict that no one dared question.
