INARA'S POV

Sleep finally claimed me sometime after dawn, but it was restless and full of silver eyes and warm skin under my fingers.

When I woke up, the memory of last night hit me like a warm wave—Grayson’s bare chest, the way his voice had gone rough when he thanked me, that almost-touch on my cheek.

My wolf was smug about it. I told her to calm down. He was still the same grumpy Alpha who saw me as second-best.

I dressed quickly in a soft blue tunic and pants suitable for moving around the pack house, then headed to the main dining area. My stomach was already flipping at the thought of seeing him again. Would he act like nothing happened? Go back to cold commands?

The hall was busier than yesterday. Elders and a few high-ranking warriors were gathered around the long table, voices low and tense.

Grayson sat at the head, looking every bit the powerful Alpha even with the fresh bandage hidden under his dark shirt.

His hair was tousled like he hadn’t bothered to fix it after whatever chaos the rogues caused last night. When his silver eyes lifted and met mine, something shifted in them—warmer than before, but still guarded.

I took the seat beside him without waiting for permission. “Morning again, Alpha. You look like you actually got some rest. Miracle of miracles.”

His lips twitched, the tiniest almost-smirk, but he covered it with a sip of coffee. “You talk too much in the mornings, Inara.”

“Someone has to balance out all that brooding,” I whispered back, reaching for a piece of fruit. Our fingers brushed over the bowl. Heat zinged up my arm again, and I saw his jaw tighten like he felt it too.

Before he could reply, one of the older elders—Elder Thorne, with his sharp face and permanent scowl, cleared his throat loudly. “Alpha, with respect… the Luna Welcoming Ritual was meant to happen in two nights. But many of us are concerned. She is not the originally chosen twin. The moon magic may not accept a substitute so easily. Perhaps we should reconsider the entire arrangement before we embarrass the pack further.”

The words landed like ice water down my back. I froze, cheeks burning. A few heads turned my way, some pitying, some doubtful. My wolf bristled, but I kept my expression calm. I wasn’t going to shrink.

Grayson’s hand slammed down on the table, not hard enough to break it, but enough to make everyone sit up straighter. “Inara Vallon stands as my Luna now. She has already shown more loyalty in two days than her sister did in a lifetime. Question her again, Elder Thorne, and you’ll be questioning my judgment.”

The hall went dead silent. My heart stuttered. He was… defending me? Publicly? I glanced at him, and his silver eyes were locked on the elder with that dangerous Alpha glare. Possessive. Protective. It made something warm bloom in my chest despite everything.

Elder Thorne muttered an apology and looked away. Grayson’s hand found my knee under the table for a brief, steadying squeeze before he pulled back. The touch was gone too fast, but it left my skin tingling.

“Eat,” he told me gruffly, pushing a plate toward me. “You’ll need your strength. We have a long day.”

I wanted to tease him about playing nice, but the look in his eyes stopped me. There was something deeper there now. Like last night had cracked the ice just a little more.

The rest of breakfast passed in a blur of pack business. I chimed in where I could, offering ideas about strengthening ties with Moonveil despite Liora’s mess.

Grayson listened, actually listened—nodding once or twice. Every time his arm brushed mine or his scent wrapped around me, my thoughts got fuzzy. This man was dangerous for my heart.

Later that afternoon, he surprised me by pulling me aside after a strategy meeting. “Walk with me.”

We ended up on a quiet path near the training grounds again. The sun filtered through the trees, and the air smelled of pine and earth. Grayson walked with his hands clasped behind his back, his broad shoulders tense.

“You didn’t have to defend me like that,” I said softly, kicking a small stone. “I could’ve handled Elder Thorne.”

He stopped and turned to me. “I know you could. But you’re my Luna now, Inara. Substitute or not. No one gets to undermine you in my hall.” His voice dropped lower. “Not while I’m breathing.”

My breath caught. The way he said it, so fierce and final—made my wolf preen. I stepped closer without thinking, tilting my head up to meet his gaze. “Careful, Grayson. That almost sounded like you care.”

A low growl rumbled in his chest. He reached out, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers lingered on my jaw, warm and rough. “Don’t push it. This is still a contract. The curse…” He exhaled sharply. “It won’t let me give you what you deserve.”

“But you feel it too, don’t you?” I whispered, my hand coming up to rest lightly on his chest, right over the bandage I’d put there last night. “This pull. Even with the curse.”

His eyes darkened, dropping to my lips. For a second, I thought he might kiss me. My heart hammered wildly. Then he stepped back, breaking the moment.

“We need to talk about the ritual,” he said, voice rough. “The elders brought troubling news this morning. More rogue attacks near the borders, and strange disturbances in the sacred grounds. The moon runes showed instability last night. The ritual is being adjourned.”

My stomach dropped. “Adjourned? For how long?”

“Two months.” He ran a hand through his dark hair. “Maybe more if the threats continue. The pack can’t risk a failed binding right now. It would weaken us further.”

Two months. Two whole months of living in this half-marriage, pretending in public, getting closer in private while the curse kept him at arm’s length.

Part of me was relieved—it gave me time to prove myself. The other part was terrified. What if I fell harder and he still pushed me away at the end?

Grayson must have seen the mix of emotions on my face. He cupped my cheek briefly, thumb brushing my skin in a way that felt almost tender. “This gives us time, Inara. Time for the pack to adjust. Time for… whatever this is between us to settle.”

His words hung heavy. I leaned into his touch for just a second before he pulled away again, that grumpy mask sliding back into place.

“Come on,” he said, already turning back toward the residence. “There’s more border reports to review. And tonight we’ll have dinner alone. No elders. No politics.”

Alone. The word sent butterflies exploding in my stomach.

The rest of the day passed in a haze of work and stolen glances. Every time Grayson looked at me across the room, every gruff order softened with that new protectiveness, I felt myself slipping deeper.

By evening, when we sat down to a quiet dinner in his private chambers, just the two of us, candlelight flickering across his handsome face—I was a mess of nerves and want.

He was still grumpy, barking about pack security between bites, but he listened when I spoke. He even poured me wine without being asked. Small things. But they felt huge.

As the meal wound down, Grayson leaned back in his chair, silver eyes studying me intently. “You’re handling all of this better than I expected, Inara.”

I smiled, a little shy but mostly sassy. “Told you I wasn’t going to run. Even if my substitute status just got extended by two months.”

He didn’t smile back, but the look in his eyes made heat pool low in my belly. “Two months,” he repeated, almost to himself. His gaze lingered on my lips again, darker this time.

My pulse raced. The air between us crackled. What would happen in these two months? Would the chemistry building between us finally break the curse… or would it destroy me when the ritual eventually came?

Just as I opened my mouth to ask, a sharp knock sounded on the door. One of his betas called urgently from the hallway.

“Alpha! Another rogue sighting—closer this time. They’re asking for you.”

Grayson cursed under his breath and stood, but not before giving me one last intense look that promised this conversation wasn’t over.

“Stay here,” he ordered softly. “I’ll be back.”

I watched him leave, heart racing, already missing his presence. Two months suddenly felt both too long and not nearly enough.

And deep down, I knew that by the time that ritual finally happened, I wouldn’t just be his substitute anymore.

I was falling for him—curse, contract, and all.

  • The Cursed Alpha's Substitute Luna    Stay with me tonight

INARA'S POV Chaos exploded around us the second the rogues burst from the trees. My heart slammed against my ribs as Grayson shoved me firmly behind him, his body a solid wall of muscle and fury. The partial shift made him even more terrifying—claws extended, eyes blazing pure silver, that low growl rumbling from his chest like thunder.“Stay behind me,” he ordered, voice rough and commanding. No room for argument.I wasn’t stupid enough to disobey. But I wasn’t helpless either. My wolf surged forward, claws pricking at my fingertips as I scanned the garden. There were at least six rogues, eyes glowing with malice. The scarred one who’d called me out stepped forward, smirking.“Vallon blood always causes problems,” he sneered. “Your sister owed us big time before she ran. Hand over the twin and we’ll consider leaving your cursed pack alone.”Liora. Of course this mess followed her. Anger and fear twisted in my stomach. I gripped the back of Grayson’s shirt, feeling the heat rolling

  • The Cursed Alpha's Substitute Luna    Stay Close To Me

INARA'S POV I stayed in Grayson’s chambers for what felt like forever after he left, my forehead still tingling from that brief press of his lips and my body buzzing like I’d been struck by lightning. The almost-kiss hung in the air like unfinished business, making my lips feel swollen even though we’d barely touched. My wolf was throwing a full tantrum inside me, demanding we go find him and finish what the stupid emergency council had interrupted.“Down, girl,” I muttered, pressing cool hands to my flushed cheeks. This was dangerous. Two months of this tension and I might actually lose my mind.Eventually I dragged myself back to my room, but sleep didn’t come easy. When it did, it was full of silver eyes and rough hands and the low growl of his voice saying my name like a secret.Morning came too soon. I woke up determined to act normal—like I hadn’t been two seconds away from melting into the cursed Alpha last night. I chose a fitted cream top and dark pants that let me move e

Or at least, I didn’t want to be.I helped clear the table a little, then slipped back to my own room, but sleep was a joke. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw his silver gaze dropping to my lips, felt the ghost of his fingers on my jaw from earlier that day. By the time the sky started lightening outside, I gave up and went for a walk in the gardens to clear my head. The morning air was cool, carrying the scent of dew and pine. • The Cursed Alpha's Substitute Luna    Don't Forget

INARA'S POV I tossed and turned in the big, unfamiliar bed until the sheets felt like they were strangling me. The moon was hanging high outside my window, casting silvery light across the room that only made my wolf more restless. Every little sound in the Alpha’s residence had me sitting up— a distant door closing, footsteps in the hall, the faint howl of a patrol wolf somewhere beyond the walls. Grayson still wasn’t back. At least, not that I knew of.He’s fine, I told myself for the hundredth time. He’s the Alpha. He’s dealt with rogues before. But my mind kept flashing to those powerful shoulders, the way his silver eyes could go stormy in an instant. What if he was hurt? What if the curse made him push himself harder than any normal wolf?I groaned and swung my legs over the side of the bed, grabbing a thin robe to throw over my nightgown. It was late, probably past midnight—but I couldn’t just lie there pretending I didn’t care. I wasn’t Liora. I didn’t run from hard things

  • The Cursed Alpha's Substitute Luna    Pretty Decoration

INARA'S POV The morning light filtering through the tall windows of the Alpha’s residence felt way too bright for the knot twisting in my stomach. I’d barely slept, replaying Grayson’s cold words on loop until my wolf wanted to howl in frustration. ‘Don’t make me regret this any more than I already do.’ Yeah, well, same here, buddy.I stood in front of the mirror in the room they’d assigned me, smoothing down the simple but elegant dress one of the pack maids had brought. Deep green, fitted at the waist, flowing just enough to move with me. It wasn’t flashy like Liora would’ve chosen, but it felt right. I wasn’t here to outshine anyone. I was here to survive.A sharp knock on the door made me jump. “Luna Inara? The Alpha requests your presence in the main hall. The pack elders are waiting.”Luna Inara. The title still sounded fake in my ears. I took a deep breath, squared my shoulders, and stepped out. Two guards fell in behind me as I walked the long corridor. Their expressions
