Inside was moonlight where no moon should reach. A white stone pool glowed in the center, water so clear it looked like liquid silver. Shelves of old scrolls lined the wall, some so ancient they crumbled at the edges. The air smelled like lavender and secrets and something else. Something old. Kaelen entered last, hand on his blade, his entire body rigid. His eyes were still silver, his wolf trapped just beneath the surface, clawing at him. His shirt was torn at the neck where he’d been fighting his own nature, his own need.

He hadn’t stopped needing her. He’d just forced himself to pretend. The three of them stood in the sanctuary, breathing the ancient air.

Then Rhae froze. Her hand, the one still burning from the magical contact with the door, began to ache. She pulled up her sleeve slowly, her heart pounding.

On the inside of her wrist, just above where her pulse beat, was a mark. A symbol she had hidden her entire life beneath long sleeves and careful positioning. It was silver, luminescent, exactly. Exactly matched the carving on the sanctuary wall, the woman standing between two black wolves, the woman with a hand raised.

No Rhae breath. She looked at the wall, then looked back at her wrist, then, as her hands trembled in the silver light. Valen saw it first. His eyes widened, and he stepped toward the wall, toward the carving, then back to her. Rhae…. your birthmark. I do not understand, Rhae whispered. Her entire body was shaking now. She did think that Mark was just something she was born with. A stain. A flaw. Something to be ashamed of. So she hid it. Always hidden it.

It is not possible, Kaelen said, his voice was hard, dismissive, but his hands were shaking. “It can’t be…”

But his wolf knew. She could feel it through the fractured bond. His wolf knew something she did not, something ancient, something that terrified him. What does it mean? Rhae asked, her voice so small it was barely a whisper. Why does it match the…..? Because, Valen said slowly, stepping toward the ancient scroll, “You’re not just any Omega. You’re not just any werewolf. He pulled a scroll from the shelf, his hand reverent. The parchment was so old that it seemed to be made of something between paper and moth wing. As he unrolled it, symbols identical to Rhae’s birthday glowed faintly in the sanctuary light.

These symbols, Valen said, his voice filled with an emotion Rhae couldn’t name, “are the mark of the BloodMoon line. The silence that followed was absolutely terrifying. “The BloodMoon line?” Rhae said the words were like they were foreign in her mouth. I don't……I don’t understand. I’m just an omega. I have always been just an omega. I was raised…

By the pack. Valen finished, and his eyes were sad. So sad. Yes, you were. But Rhae, listen to me. The BloodMoon line was the most powerful bloodline in werewolf history.

He set the ancient scroll on the white stone pool, and in the moonlight, reflecting off the water, the symbols seemed to come alive, dancing like silver fire.

“They could heal with their touch. They could communicate across vast distances. They could see potential futures. They were deeply connected to the Moon Goddess herself in ways that transcended normal werewolf nature.

Kaelen had moved to the furthest corner of the sanctuary, his hands gripping the edge of his stone table so hard his knuckles had turned white. His wolf was pacing inside him. She could feel it through their fractured bond. Angry. Terrified. Wanting.

But the council…. Valen continued, his voice growing harder, “The council claimed they were traitors. They said the BloodMoon Line started wars, brought dark magic into the pack, threatening the balance of power, so they orchestrated their destruction.

“Destruction,” Rhae echoed numbly. The room seemed to be spinning around her. A massacre, Kaelen said from across the room, his voice barely controlled, rage. “Generations ago, the entire BloodMoon line was hunted. Killed. Erased from history. But the official story never made sense, Valen said, and now he was moving to another shelf, pulling down more scrolls, spreading them across the pool's edge. The more I researched, the more the council’s accounts contradicted themselves. Evidence of an alliance. A secret pact, made centuries ago. He unrolled a scroll dated in old scripts, and there was written in faded ink that still seemed to shimmer with residual magic, where two names intertwined with circuit runes.

“Sera of the BloodMoond”

“Darius of the Emberwood”

The words hit Rhae like a physical blow. No, she said. No, that's not…. My mother’s name was... She could not even remember. How could she not remember her own mother's name? Had they never told her, or had they told her so long ago that it had been buried under years of careful forgetting, careful erasure, careful survival as an invisible omega? Your mother's name was Sera, Valen said, gently. She was a BloodMoon Luna. One of the last.

The room tilted. The sanctuary seemed to stretch and contract around her, the ancient scrolls, the glowing pool. The carved door with the symbol that matched our skin. It was all too much, too real, too impossibly true.

The council destroyed them because they were afraid, Kaelen said from his corner, and when Rhea looked at him, she saw that his eyes were wet. Silver tears on his scarred face. They were afraid of their power, of what they represented. The candles in the sanctuary suddenly flared brighter. All of them at once, flooding the space with golden light. In that light, standing beside the ancient pool, as if she’d always been there, was a woman. She was translucent, luminous, a figure caught between the physical world and something else. Her hair was the color of moonlight, her eyes exactly the shade of Rhae’s own. She wore robes that seemed woven from silver light itself, and on her wrist, the same birthmark glowed softly.

Rhae’s breath stopped. “Mother,” the word fell from her lips like a prayer. The woman smiled, sad and infinitely loving. My daughter, Sera, said, and her voice sounded like wind, chiming through ancient places, like the song the moon sings to the night. I’ve waited so long to see you recognize what you are.”

You're… Rhae couldn't finish the sentence. She was dead. Wasn't she? She'd always been told her mother was dead. I'm here in spirit, Sera said. Her form shimmered as she moved, not quite solid, but undeniably present. I’ve been imprisoned in this sanctuary for decades, held between the worlds, kept alive by the ancient magic that binds this place. I was supposed to be executed by the council. Instead, I was hidden. By a man who made a promise to protect me. She looked at Kaelen, and something passed between recognition, gratitude, and burden. Your father, Sera continued, and now she turned back to Rhae. Aspen Emberwood, sworn to protect not just me, but my daughter. He knew the council would hunt for any survivors, so he did something extraordinary. He smuggled you into Emberwood Pack as an orphan omega, thinking that if you had no status, no power, no name, they would never suspect what you were. “But I….” Rhae’s voice was breaking. I remember nothing of you. I remember nothing of an

The lock turned just after midnight. Rhae scrambled back against the wall as the door opened, every muscle tense, every nerve screaming danger. But it was Valen who slipped inside, his funeral coat gone, blood on his sleeve. Fresh blood. From the border. You can’t stay here, he said quietly, closing the door behind him. Rhae let out a broken laugh, bitter and hopeless. “Where would I go? I’m an omega. The council reaches everywhere. And everyone wants me dead.” “Not everywhere,” Valen said. He held out his hand slowly, deliberately, giving her time to refuse. I know a way out.Why are you helping me? She asked, her voice small and broken. Because you looked terrified in that hall, He said, his eyes intense and sure. “Not guilty. Terrified. And I felt what you felt through the bond. You didn’t know those rogues. You were shocked as we were.” She stared at his palm. Trust had never kept her alive. Invisibility had. Silence had. Obedience had. Still, something in her, that same wolf

Rhae’s chest caved. He was choosing. She could feel him choosing, pulling back from the bond as it burned him, severing the connection thread by thread. The rejection hit her like a punch to the gut. Her omega whimpered inside her, confused and devastated, clawing at the bond he was destroying. No. No, please. Don’t let go. Don’t leave me.But he was already looking away. Valen’s head snapped towards his brother, Kaelen……The unspoken question hung between them like a sword. What are you doing? She’s ours. The old law hung in the air between them, too, heavy and suffocating. Twins Alphas never ruled together. One must rise. One must fall. Never together. Never equals. Never sharing a mate. Rhae’s breath came in short, panicked gasps. She didn’t understand the law. She didn’t understand anything anymore. Elder Greta’s Lips curled into a smile. Thin. Satisfied. Like she’d just won something precious. This is not a blessing, Greta said, her voice dripping with poison. This is a warning

The blade took Elder Oberon in the middle of the funeral hymn. One second, he stood beneath the moonlit windows in his silver robe, hands raised for the Alpha Aspen Emberwood rite. Next, a black bone-handled knife bloomed from his chest, and blood hit the stone before anyone saw who threw it. The hall screamed. Rhae froze at the back wall with a tray of ceremonial cups balanced in both hands. The cups rattled once. Her fingers went numb. The knife wasn't steel. It pulsed faintly, as if it were breathing. Ritual blade, Elder Oberon choked. Then he fell. The Warriors drew their weapons. Children were pulled behind their mothers. Elders rose from their high seats. Beside their father's black coffin, the twin heirs turned. Kaelen Emberwood moved first. He’s the older twin, the one everyone had feared. He’s dressed in a mourning black suit, his shoulder locked with tension. His voice hit the stone like a hammer. Seal the hall.Guards slammed the doors. Rhea flinched and made herself sm
