You're… Rhae couldn't finish the sentence. She was dead. Wasn't she? She'd always been told her mother was dead. I'm here in spirit, Sera said. Her form shimmered as she moved, not quite solid, but undeniably present. I’ve been imprisoned in this sanctuary for decades, held between the worlds, kept alive by the ancient magic that binds this place. I was supposed to be executed by the council. Instead, I was hidden. By a man who made a promise to protect me. She looked at Kaelen, and something passed between recognition, gratitude, and burden. Your father, Sera continued, and now she turned back to Rhae. Aspen Emberwood, sworn to protect not just me, but my daughter. He knew the council would hunt for any survivors, so he did something extraordinary. He smuggled you into Emberwood Pack as an orphan omega, thinking that if you had no status, no power, no name, they would never suspect what you were. “But I….” Rhae’s voice was breaking. I remember nothing of you. I remember nothing of an Emberwood protecting me. I remember only..

Serving, Sera said gently. Being invisible. Being safe, because no one thought you mattered. Aspen protected you the only way he could, without putting you in immediate danger. He watched over you from the shadows for your entire life, raising you in plain sight as a servant girl, never revealing the truth. The room seemed to pulse with the weight of this revelation. Why? Rhae whispered. Why didn't he tell me? Why didn't he?

Because he was afraid, Kaelen said, and his voice was raw, broken in a way that suggested this was personal in ways Rhae didn't yet understand. He was afraid that if you knew, if you claimed your power too early, the council would sense it. They would come for you.

As they stood in the sanctuary, absorbing the impossible truth, Rhea's birthmark suddenly blazed with silver light. The spark spread across her skin like living fire, not painful, but overwhelming. Suddenly, she was somewhere else. The sanctuary dissolved. She was standing in darkness, in a hidden room beneath stone. A woman—her mother, she knew without knowing how- stood across from a man with silver eyes like Kaelen and kind eyes like Valen’s.

Aspen Sera whispered, and in the future vision, Sera was solid, real, alive in a way she wasn't now. “You came.” “I always come,” the man Alpha Aspen said. He was older than she’d imagined, worn by responsibility and secret-keeping. “The council is growing restless. They suspect something. Will she be safe? Sera asked desperately. I swear it on old blood, Aspen said. He pulled a sealed letter from his robes and handed it to her. It was thick with wax and sealed with the Emberwood sigil. When the time comes, when she is old enough, when she is strong enough, they will find this, my sons will understand. And if they don't? Sera’s voice broke. Then I will have failed both of you. Aspen said. He reached out and touched her face, and the gesture was so tender, so full of sorrow, that Rhea's heart ached. But I will not fail, Sera. I made an oath to protect you. To protect your bloodline, and I will honour that oath if it costs me everything. The vision shifted. Rhae saw Aspen, older now, entering a study. She saw him write something, saw him seal the letter, saw him hide it behind a stone in the wall. She saw him write in a journal, his handwriting becoming more frantic. "If you are reading this, I’m dead,” and the council has begun its final play. The girl... Her name is Rhea. She carries an oath I made long ago, and more importantly, she is the key to everything. The vision shattered like breaking glass. Rhae gasped, and she was back in the sanctuary. She was on her knees. Valen was catching her, his arms around her, his voice calling to her through what seemed like miles of darkness. Rhae! Rhae! Come back! Come back! She opened her eyes to find the sanctuary still glowing with the soft moonlight. Sera was fading, her translucent form growing more ethereal.

You saw, Sera said, her voice already distant. “You saw the truth. You saw what your father did for us.

Where is the letter? Kaelen demanded. He was moving with sudden purpose toward an old wooden desk in the corner of the sanctuary, one that Rhae was certain hadn't been there a moment before. The letter, Father wrote. It must be here……. His hands found a loose stone in the desk, and it gave way. Behind it, wrapped in protective cloth, was a sealed letter. The wax was unbroken, but the seal bore the unmistakable mark of the Emberwood Alpha.

Kaelen’s hands shook as he held it. It's addressed, he said softly, to both of us. To Valens and to me. He looked at Rhae, and his eyes, she saw the moment he believed. Not just believed, but understood. This wasn't some random twist of fate. This was destiny written before she was even born.

Inside was moonlight where no moon should reach. A white stone pool glowed in the center, water so clear it looked like liquid silver. Shelves of old scrolls lined the wall, some so ancient they crumbled at the edges. The air smelled like lavender and secrets and something else. Something old. Kaelen entered last, hand on his blade, his entire body rigid. His eyes were still silver, his wolf trapped just beneath the surface, clawing at him. His shirt was torn at the neck where he’d been fighting his own nature, his own need. He hadn’t stopped needing her. He’d just forced himself to pretend. The three of them stood in the sanctuary, breathing the ancient air. Then Rhae froze. Her hand, the one still burning from the magical contact with the door, began to ache. She pulled up her sleeve slowly, her heart pounding. On the inside of her wrist, just above where her pulse beat, was a mark. A symbol she had hidden her entire life beneath long sleeves and careful positioning. It was silver,

The lock turned just after midnight. Rhae scrambled back against the wall as the door opened, every muscle tense, every nerve screaming danger. But it was Valen who slipped inside, his funeral coat gone, blood on his sleeve. Fresh blood. From the border. You can’t stay here, he said quietly, closing the door behind him. Rhae let out a broken laugh, bitter and hopeless. “Where would I go? I’m an omega. The council reaches everywhere. And everyone wants me dead.” “Not everywhere,” Valen said. He held out his hand slowly, deliberately, giving her time to refuse. I know a way out.Why are you helping me? She asked, her voice small and broken. Because you looked terrified in that hall, He said, his eyes intense and sure. “Not guilty. Terrified. And I felt what you felt through the bond. You didn’t know those rogues. You were shocked as we were.” She stared at his palm. Trust had never kept her alive. Invisibility had. Silence had. Obedience had. Still, something in her, that same wolf

Rhae’s chest caved. He was choosing. She could feel him choosing, pulling back from the bond as it burned him, severing the connection thread by thread. The rejection hit her like a punch to the gut. Her omega whimpered inside her, confused and devastated, clawing at the bond he was destroying. No. No, please. Don’t let go. Don’t leave me.But he was already looking away. Valen’s head snapped towards his brother, Kaelen……The unspoken question hung between them like a sword. What are you doing? She’s ours. The old law hung in the air between them, too, heavy and suffocating. Twins Alphas never ruled together. One must rise. One must fall. Never together. Never equals. Never sharing a mate. Rhae’s breath came in short, panicked gasps. She didn’t understand the law. She didn’t understand anything anymore. Elder Greta’s Lips curled into a smile. Thin. Satisfied. Like she’d just won something precious. This is not a blessing, Greta said, her voice dripping with poison. This is a warning

The blade took Elder Oberon in the middle of the funeral hymn. One second, he stood beneath the moonlit windows in his silver robe, hands raised for the Alpha Aspen Emberwood rite. Next, a black bone-handled knife bloomed from his chest, and blood hit the stone before anyone saw who threw it. The hall screamed. Rhae froze at the back wall with a tray of ceremonial cups balanced in both hands. The cups rattled once. Her fingers went numb. The knife wasn't steel. It pulsed faintly, as if it were breathing. Ritual blade, Elder Oberon choked. Then he fell. The Warriors drew their weapons. Children were pulled behind their mothers. Elders rose from their high seats. Beside their father's black coffin, the twin heirs turned. Kaelen Emberwood moved first. He’s the older twin, the one everyone had feared. He’s dressed in a mourning black suit, his shoulder locked with tension. His voice hit the stone like a hammer. Seal the hall.Guards slammed the doors. Rhea flinched and made herself sm
