Chapter 1

When I arrived at the bonfire gathering, the covenant ceremony was already underway.

That woman, Lily Brown , wore a bone crown on her head, the symbol of a Luna, standing beside Alpha Hall.

My parents stood at the very front of the crowd, beaming like it was their own daughter tying the knot.

I scanned the crowd from a distance. I did not make a move.

Finding Sia came first.

I slipped past the patrols and crept into the cabin she used to live in. Before I left, Hall had sent ten snow fox pelts and a chest of jewels as parting gifts. Now they were all gone.

A maid walked past the door. She paused when she saw me, then let out a cold laugh.

"Sia? You monster. How dare you sneak out of the Forbidden Grounds?"

She thought I was Sia. My eyes locked onto the wolf fang hanging around her neck. The charm I gave Sia.

Not wanting to alert the crowd farther out, I swallowed the fire in my chest and mimicked my sister's gentle tone. "Where did you get that charm?"

The maid took it off and dangled it in front of me, smirking. "The new Luna gave it to me. All your old jewelry, your clothes, they are Lily's now. She tosses out scraps, and it is still more than you will ever have."

I nodded, forcing my voice to be calm. "Take it off. Give it back."

The maid laughed like I had just told a joke. She shoved me and snapped, "It is the Alpha's covenant ceremony today. Get back to the Forbidden Grounds. If Lily sees your ugly, cursed face, you will get another beating for sure."

I stepped back half a pace and held my temper. "Another?"

The maid gave me a smug look. "Last month you disrespected Lily. The guards broke three of your ribs. Forgot already?"

Last month, when I was officially named Alpha of the Wintercrest Pack, a sharp pain had suddenly stabbed through my chest. I thought it was my old injury flaring up. Turns out it was Sia getting hurt.

The maid took my silence for fear. She pulled a dagger from her belt and lunged at me.

I stopped holding back. I caught her wrist mid-swing and looked her dead in the eye. "What did I do wrong? I was Hall's chosen mate. Why cancel the bond? Why lock me up in the Forbidden Grounds?"

The maid thrashed and screamed curses at me. "The witch said so! After your sister left, the curse passed to you! If Hall mated you, the whole pack would fall! Alpha did not have you killed. That is mercy enough!"

The guards outside heard the commotion and burst in. The lead guard drew his blade and shouted, "Sia, let her go, or I will cut you down right now."

The maid puffed up with confidence. She grabbed my hair with her free hand and shrieked, "A dying freak like you dares to touch me? I will finish you off today."

She wrenched free and drove the dagger at my chest. I sidestepped, took the blade from her, ripped the wolf fang charm off her neck, and grabbed her by the nape.

The guards roared and charged at me, blades swinging. I dodged, swept their legs out from under them, and sent them crashing to the ground.

The lead guard writhed on the floor, snarling in rage. "Are you insane? Luna and the witch will not let this slide! Your parents disowned you! They adopted Lily as their daughter! Nobody is on your side now! You just attacked pack guards. Are you declaring war on all of us?"

My foot pressed down harder. The guard gasped, crushed under the weight of the gap between us, and finally shut his mouth.

Three years ago, one casual word from the witch drove me out of the pack. Now she would not even leave Sia alone, stripping her of her status, her family, even her freedom.

I leaned down, looked the guard square in the face, and said in a voice flat as stone, "Didn't you tell me to go back to the Forbidden Grounds? I'm going right now. You, lead the way."

Hall's heart dropped. His head snapped up.He stumbled to my feet, dropped to one knee, and looked up at Sia. "Sia, no. I won't accept this! I was blind. I was deceived! I know how much you have suffered. I will make it right! I will have Lily executed right now. Please, give me one more chance. Please."Sia looked at him and shook her head gently. "It's too late, Hall. This justice you are offering, it didn't come from your conscience. My sister fought her way here to get it for me. I, Sia, reject you, Hall, as my mate."Hall collapsed to the ground in agony. Lily, watching from the side, saw the tide had turned and finally lost all hope. She screamed like a madwoman. "Why?! I planned this for so long! Why do you get to come back and take everything away from me?!"With a burst of desperate strength, she broke free from the soldiers and lunged at me and Sia. "If I can't be Luna, then neither can you! Come die with me!"Hall shouted in terror, "Sia, watch out!"I stared coldly at Lily

Hall snatched the letter from the wooden box.The further he read, the worse his face got. His hands started shaking uncontrollably. The letter documented every dirty deal between Lily and the witch, crystal clear. Lily had traded mining rights to rare minerals in exchange for the witch's prophecy branding me as the cursed wolf. All because she needed me gone before she could take out Sia, the one Hall had truly set his eyes on.And that "noble bloodline" she flaunted? Nothing but empty words from the witch's mouth. After I was exiled, Lily moved fast. She shifted the curse onto Sia. Bribed the priestess. Planted rumors about being a high-born white wolf to catch Hall's attention.Hall's head snapped up, his eyes locked on Lily. "All of this was fake?"Lily clutched at straws, shaking her head frantically, crawling toward him in tears. "No! Hall, let me explain! Those two sisters hate me. They faked this whole thing to frame me! I'm innocent!"Sia leaned against my shoulder, a bitter s

The dungeon was damp and dark, thick with the stench of blood.I followed the stone steps down. At the end, a torch flickered weakly. In the deepest corner of the dungeon, I finally found Sia.She was submerged in filthy water, her wrists bound by iron chains overhead. Her once-white dress was now soaked through with blood. The old priestess stood before her, holding an iron rod coated in silver dust, interrogating her. "Why did your cursed sister come back? How many did she bring? Tell the truth. Get your sister to surrender, and maybe the Luna will spare your miserable life."Sia hung her head limply, her hair matted with sweat and blood, her face ghostly pale. At the priestess's words, she lifted her head, agonizingly slow, and spat right in her face. "My sister is not cursed. And I will never betray her. Go ahead. Kill me."The priestess flew into a rage. She wiped the blood off her face, her features twisted with fury as she raised the iron rod. "Since you are begging for death, I

My father collapsed to the ground, pointing at me, his lips trembling violently. "You were exiled! How are you here?!"My mother panicked too. She clung to Lily's arm, scrambling for excuses. "We did it for the pack! The witch said you two were cursed! We had no choice! When you left back then, we spared your life!"I let out a cold laugh. "Spared my life?"I flicked my wrist and pulled out a cloth-wrapped bundle from inside my coat. I tossed it at their feet. "The day I accepted exile, I hadn't even made it past the pack's borders before four assassins came for me. These arrows were meant to put me in the ground."I stared at my parents' ashen faces. "Father. Mother. Care to guess why I'm still standing?"My father's face went white as bone. He couldn't get a single word out.Back then, they had paid top coin for the pack's best archers. Thought it was foolproof. What they didn't know, their archers were nothing compared to me.I dodged every poison-tipped arrow. Let them think I had

My parents rushed to the Forbidden Grounds entrance, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers. My mother saw me holding the blade at Lily's throat and let out a shriek. She threw herself in front of Lily without a second thought. "Get away from her! You lunatic!"Then she hauled her arm back and slapped me across the face. The crack echoed through the night sky."Lily is a white wolf of noble blood! She can lead this pack to prosperity! We took her as our adopted daughter. What's wrong with giving her a little extra love? The prophecy was right. You and your cursed sister, all you ever bring is disaster!"I turned my head slowly and licked the blood off the corner of my mouth. "That slap. Was it for Lily?"My mother spat back, "So what if it was? You attacked the future Luna! You deserve to die!"I nodded. "Noted."My father stormed forward too, his face twisted with disgust. "We should have burned you when we had the chance. Your sister was a plague, and you are no different! Put down the w

A squad of elite guards strode forward. Following behind them was Alpha Hall. The High Priestess scrambled to her feet like she had just found a lifeline and scurried back into the Forbidden Grounds."Sia, what are you doing?" Hall frowned, his face unreadable.I stood my ground and stared at him coldly. "You locked me in that dark pit of a prison, and now you are out here tying the knot with another woman?"Something flickered in Hall's eyes, guilt maybe. His voice came out a little unsteady. "You heard the witch's prophecy yourself. You and your sister, you both carry the blood of the cursed wolf. If I insisted on making you my Luna, the entire pack would fall. Sia, for what we once had, I will swear by the Moon Goddess, if you just go back to the Forbidden Grounds quietly and stop hurting Lily, I will let today slide."Before he even finished, a searing pain exploded in my chest. Like a blade twisting through my ribs, shredding flesh.I knew what this was. Sia was still alive, and s
