REIGN'S POV

Faucett doesn't look like himself.

He looked like himself in the main hall earlier tonight, when he was cold-gripping Sonya's hand and delivering veiled threats in a smooth voice.

Now he's sitting in the operations room with Elon's two guards behind him, looking like a man who's finally run out of ways to keep himself together.

I take the chair across from him.

He watches me sit down with the eyes of someone doing very quick calculations about what his options are and arriving at a

REIGN'S POVTHE WEDDING DAYI'm nervous.I've fought rogues. I've stormed a mountain fortress. I've stood in front of fifty Alphas and told them a terrorist attack was over. Now I'm standing in the courtyard of my own pack, dressed in a black suit with a white shirt, and my hands won't stop sweating."You look like you're about to throw up," Landon notes beside me."I'm fine.""You look green.""I said I'm fine, Lan.""You know, it's actually kind of nice to see you like this." He adjusts my tie, smirking. "I never thought I'd see the day.""I'm going to kill you.""After the wedding." He pats my shoulder. "Breathe, Reign. Sonya’s going to say yes. She already said yes.""I know that.""Then what's the problem?""The problem," I say, "is that I'm about to see her in a wedding dress, and I don't think I'm going to survive it."Landon laughs, and I let him, because he's right. The courtyard looks different from the night of the Luna ceremony. It's the same stone, the same trees, but som

SONYA'S POVA month after the Summit, I'm lying on a beach towel with my toes in warm sand, and Reign's making a face like the ocean personally insulted him."It's in my shoe, Sonya," he grumbles."You're not wearing shoes, Reign.""It's in the place where my shoe would be."I press my face into my arm to hide my laugh. It doesn't work. He's sitting on the side of the towel in black swim shorts, looking like a sexy god who got lost on the way to a boardroom, brushing sand off his calf with the dedication of a man defusing a bomb."You promised not to complain," I lie."I promised to complain loudly and at length. You agreed to that. You said you'd planned for it.""Okay, true.""So." He holds up his hand, which has exactly four grains of sand on it. "This is a war crime.""You've fought rogues, a dark witch, and your own brother. You can survive four grains of sand.""The rogues didn't get into my ears." He turns his head to look at me, and the corner of his mouth twitches. "I'm doing

  • The Dangerous Alpha Stepbrother Wants Me   CHAPTER 149

REIGN'S POVI walk three more steps before I answer."Not tonight." I stop. "Maybe not for a while. There's nothing he can say tonight that I want to hear, and there's nothing I can say to him that won't come from the wrong place." I look at the door at the end of the corridor, where the main hall is, where fifty-odd Alphas are waiting for a briefing. "Tonight I do the job. Everything else waits."Landon nods."Sonya's with her father," he says. "Elon had the pack medic look at her arm. The burn's not deep. It'll be gone by morning.""I know. I felt it settle through the bond twenty minutes ago." I start walking again. "How's Phoebe?""Fine," Landon says without looking at me."She was worried about you, you know.""She was worried about a lot of things. She's a worrier.""She threw a radio at an enemy agent's head, Lan," I say. "She is very specifically not a worrier.""She is specifically not a worrier," Landon agrees, and the slight roughness in his voice does the rest of the work.

"The gap in the south ward. You arrived here hours before the Summit began, which means you had plenty of time to work on it. You knew exactly which layer to remove because you've attended enough Summits to know how our wards are structured.”Faucett says nothing.I lean forward slightly. "You've been Astrid's inside resource since before she and Derek started building the Forgotten Pack. The magic

REIGN'S POVMy left side is on fire.Derek's bite went deep. Not deep enough to cause any lasting damage. My wolf should heal it within the hour. But every breath still hurts, and I can feel the blood soaking through my shirt. I'm keeping that to myself on purpose because if Sonya feels through the bond that it's serious, she'll split her focus. And she can't afford to do that. She's still holding Astrid against the wall.I don't know exactly what she's doing, some application of the curse fragments that I don't fully understand, but whatever it is, it's working, and the expression on Astrid's face is the expression of someone hitting a wall they can't get through no matter how hard they push.My mate. Holding a dark witch against a stone wall with fragments of ancient curse magic while bleeding slightly from a burn on her arm.If I wasn't so focused on the tactical situation I'd be in serious trouble emotionally right now.Derek's on the floor in front of me, human again, done.I kno

SONYA'S POVThe first time, I'd only let out enough power to disrupt her attack. I'd kept the rest contained. This is different. This is me stopping the filter entirely, and what comes out of me is a wave that fills the corridor from wall to wall, floor to ceiling, dark energy that Astrid's purple light crashes against and for a moment the two forces press against each other in the air between us, competing, and the noise of it is like pressure rather than sound, a sensation you feel in your chest and your teeth.Astrid pushes harder.I push back. It's not graceful. There's nothing technical about what I'm doing, no training behind it, just the sheer determination that I'm not going to be taken from this corridor tonight, not from Reign, not from my pack, not from the life I've spent the last several months actually building for the first time. The wave crashes forward.Astrid hits the wall. Not gently. She hits it hard enough that the stone cracks behind her, and she slides down it,
