Lucas’s POV

When you are the CEO of a big company like this, a week from work is too long now isn't it?

No matter the circumstances, a week as the CEO is too long. I don't do this. Infact I have never done this. Genuinely I am shocked that I haven't been sanctioned by the board, but some of them know why I was absent so I am sure they fought my case for me.

That's not to say the week I took off I didn't enjoy it. My goodness I did. The way we kept each other company, the jokes and banter was

Deborah's POV “You’re cousins.”His voice came out small and broken. I stood in the doorway with my bag hanging heavy off my shoulder. He just stood there staring out the window like he was looking for something he lost.He finally turned around. His face was pale. He had a flicker of sadness, regret and frustration all mixed up in his eyes.“You and mike, you guys are cousins. I always thought you looked familiar. At first I wasn't sure, but that looks in your eyes today gave it away, so I did some digging and…”“I know,” I whispered. “I know we're cousins.” “You knew?”“Yes.” The word hung dead in the air between us.He took a step forward. I instinctively took a step back, my hand tightening around my bag.“Why?” I asked. And this time my voice wasn't small. It was shaking but it was loud. “Why did you do it, Lucas?”“He stole from me,” he said, his voice was hard and flat. “Deborah, he was stealing.”“So you killed him?” My voice was breaking. I couldn't believe it.“When you'r

  • The Dangerous Truth Between Them    Chapter 24 - Mike is dead

Deborah's POV The Evergreen meeting was legitimate. I was shocked too.Ms Chen from Evergreen shipping showed up at 10:02am wearing a sharp gray suit was and carrying a folder. The folder had real papers, with real numbers that actually made sense. It was quite boring to be frank. Lucas was different. He was in full CEO mode. Not the intimidating one. The competent one. The CEO who actually listens and doesn't fire or threaten people for breathing wrong. We sat in the big conference room and I had my laptop open taking notes like a good secretary, but inside I was freaking out.“So Blackridge, you handled the Oakland Overflow last quarter,” Ms. Chen said, sliding a chart across the table. “Your on- time rate was 94 percent. That's better than our current provider. But your quote last time was high.”“It was high because we included fuel surcharge and customs brokerage,” Lucas said. He opened a spreadsheet and said, “If we strip that out and do port to port only we can do $3200 per T

  • The Dangerous Truth Between Them    Chapter 23

Deborah's POV I didn't sleep after Enoch left. I sat at my little kitchen table long after he left to go back to his motel, staring at the tea stain that I had apparently made. I couldn't believe it.My own cousin had been killed, right under my nose and I hadn't noticed because I kept on licking Lucas's ass.I feel stupid.Pathetic.And Mike. Uncle E said… no. I have to see for myself I have to be sure of everything. I mean it's Lucas we're talking about. He's a fucking billionaire. A public figure we're talking about. But then he was ready to off Daniel in an instant. Maybe I am overreacting because I watch too many movies. Not every money launderer is a killer. But he has this survivalist instinct insider him. That, I'll do anything instinct, and the look in his eyes when Daniel threatened him, I was so scared for his life. Maybe I am overreacting, Mike isn't probably even fired, he's probably sitting in his bedroom right now playing video games or something. I mean he could

  • The Dangerous Truth Between Them     Chapter 22

Deborah's POVI feel good.I heard from Daniel yesterday, he was doing well. I asked that we do a video call but he said he couldn't at the moment. Which was very weird of him.Things were going back to normal in the office, and I liked that feeling of normality.According to everyone, he was in the London office. Arthur from accounting told me he always wanted to go there and Karen from HR said she will miss his terrible jokes about spreadsheets. I nodded and smiled at them both. “Yeah London, that's so great for him.” I felt sick every time someone mentioned Daniel but it was better than death. I felt at peace. And Lucas… Lucas was trying. It was Tuesday around 11:39AM. I was at my desk outside his office doing my normal duties of typing up minutes from a meeting where nothing useful was said for the better hour of it. My coffee, the oat milk one, was actually hot this time. I didn't dump it. I was sipping it when his glass door opened. He leaned against the frame with his sleeve

  • The Dangerous Truth Between Them    Chapter 21

Lucas's POV Try being at the office at 5:30 in the morning. You'll find it peaceful. I like the office at 5:30, because it's the only time where the building is well and truly honest. The assistants aren't here to pretend they love their jobs, the board members aren't here to pretend they understand logistics and finally, Deborah isn't here to pretend to avoid me. It's just me and the air-conditioning and the city outside my glass walls still half asleep.I had two coffees on my desk. One black, which is mine and the other with oat milk and two sugars, which is hers. She hadn't been drinking the coffee I left for her all week. She would come in, look at it, say thank you Mr Blackridge in that cold polite voice and then dump it in the sink when I am not looking. Or when she thinks I am not looking. I am always looking at her.I was staring at some files on the table when suddenly the door swung down so hard it hit the wall. The person didn't knock, my secretary didn't even announc

  • The Dangerous Truth Between Them    Chapter 20- Yes it's true I love him

Deborah's POV I stood up and followed him out the door. “Daniel,” I spoke out trying to grab his arm, but he just moved it out of the way. I stood still.” Yes, it's true, I love him,” I confessed. He stood still and looked back at me. “And I hate myself for it, not for loving him but I love him even more now.” I slowly make my way to him and a look of concern and pity falls on his face.I take his hands into mine slowly caressing the back of his hand with my thumb. “The FBI, has an official website were you can reach a representative by email. I was this so close to hitting that send button.”“Why didn't you?” He cups my face with his hand and another tear falls. “I love him,” I whisper. “My relationship with my bosses are always bad.” “As in how?” “Either they force themselves on me or they try and weaponise keeping my job.” His jaw clenched. "Lucas was the first one to be different to me, he's the first one to not try and sleep with me." I always knew Daniel had some feeling for

  • The Dangerous Truth Between Them    Chapter 6- Do I look like his babysitter?

Deborah’s POVThe morning dragged itself into noon, and there was no sign of Lucas. I sat behind my desk straightening files I had arranged twice, pretending I wasn't already irritated by the constant parade of questions.“Where's Mr Blackridge today?,” one of the board members asked with a too bri

  • The Dangerous Truth Between Them    Chapter 5- Goodbye Mike.

Lucas's POV I watched her from the corner of my eye as I set the second mountain of files on her desk. The sound of the stack hitting the table made her jump slightly, though she tried to mask it through forced composure.“Do the same for these and make sure it's done by tomorrow,” I said flatly b

  • The Dangerous Truth Between Them    Chapter 2—Here we go

Deborah's POVThe hunt for a new job started as soon as I left the bar. As time went on, the city felt heavier like every building loomed over me with judgement. My resume was tucked under one arm and my heels clicked against the pavement. I was exhausted already. I had been turned away from three

  • The Dangerous Truth Between Them    Chapter One— You're fired!

Deborah's POVYou'll miss the sun when it starts to snow. We all know that saying, but some of us don't fully understand it. It needs to be experienced first. Imagine the last thing you told your parents were… Fuck off. I cringe as I remember those words falling out my mouth. I wish I could tell t
