Chapter 6

Author: Nameless
I'd found it while going through my father's belongings, tucked into a hidden lining at the very back of his closet. With Kate watching, I unlocked the box with a key. Inside was a single worn diary.

"It's my father's diary." I slid it across to Kate. "The proof you're looking for might be in here."

Kate picked it up, puzzled, and carefully opened the yellowed pages. The first few entries were just ordinary daily notes, but there was already a heaviness running underneath the words.

"She said if I made it look like an accident, she'd get the insurance payout, and I'd never have to worry about money again for the rest of my life..."It was Vince's voice. The recording ended, and the studio fell into dead silence. Every camera swung toward my mother, Claudia. In that instant, I watched the mask of maternal devotion she'd worn for decades finally crack, fall away, and reveal the truth underneath. The host had gone completely speechless. The broadcast never cut out, and the director was too stunned by this break from the script to do anything at all.Only the red light on the camera kept blinking.Claudia didn't look at me, and she didn't look at Kate. Her eyes locked onto the audience instead, but everyone in the room looked away. She suddenly laughed, a short, sharp bark of a sound."It's you. This is all because of you, you ungrateful wretch!" She pointed at me, her voice stripped of every trace of its soft, innocent tone. "I gave you life, and you repay me

"And yet Lorna, your daughter, has taken you to court ten times. Today, in front of the whole country, is there anything either of you would like to say to each other?" the interview host asked.Claudia wore the same faded old coat from the surveillance footage. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but her mouth carried a forgiving smile. She picked up her microphone, her voice thick with emotion. "Lorna, sweetheart, I don't blame you. I know you're only... only confused right now. No matter what you do, you'll always be my darling girl."The comments instantly filled with "what a saint," "I'm crying," and "where do you find a mother like that."I watched her flawless performance without feeling a thing. The host held out a microphone to me. I didn't take it. I just looked over at Kate, seated in the guest section.Kate nodded back and stood up. "As the reporter who followed this story, I have some new findings that might help everyone understand this 'misunderstanding' between mother and

"My father mentioned one detail on the last page of his diary." I pointed to the line and read it out loud, word for word. "'The truck had already been stopped at the intersection for a long time. It didn't look like it was waiting to pass through. It looked more like it was waiting for someone.' Was that detail ever in your case file?"Rick's fingers went still on his teacup. He lifted his drooping eyelids and looked at me directly for the first time, a flicker of a cop's old instinct for scrutiny in his eyes. After a long pause, he finally spoke. "That detail... the driver never mentioned that.""Would an exhausted driver really have the energy to sit and wait at an intersection for that long?" Kate pressed immediately.Rick didn't answer. He stood up, said only, "wait here," and walked out of the cafe.Kate and I waited a full hour, long enough for our drinks to go completely cold. Just as I'd started to think he wasn't coming back, Rick strode back in, a yellowed manila fo

Claudia says the bankbook's gone missing again, and she's blaming me for misplacing it. But I clearly remember handing it to her just yesterday. Never mind. I'm getting old. My memory isn't what it used to be.""April 12th. Wanted to call Lorna today. Claudia said Lorna's busy with work and shouldn't be bothered. She's right. I shouldn't be a burden to our daughter."Kate's frown deepened, and she started flipping the pages faster. The entries only grew more alarming from there."June 20th

We met at an old, nearly empty coffee shop. Kate showed up still looking road-worn from all the running around. She didn't even wait to order before sliding a voice recorder and a handful of printed photos across the table to me."I ignored my editor. I kept following her." She didn't waste time getting to the point, fear flickering in her eyes. "Your mother, Claudia, she's not just some ordinary trash picker after all."I looked at her without speaking, waiting for her to go on.Kate took a deep breath, like she was searching for exactly the right word. "She's the head of a fraud ring hiding in plain sight, under a pile of garbage."She told me that after studying the earlier footage more closely, she'd noticed Arnold's performance as the "struggling college student" felt too deliberate. So she'd changed her approach. Instead of tailing Claudia herself, she started watching the recycling yard. She'd found that every evening, five or six people in ragged clothes showed up at the

[I'm in tears! This is what a real saint looks like!][She starves herself just to give everything away to a total stranger!][Lorna, look at your mother! Doesn't your conscience bother you at all?!]The livestream's servers nearly crashed under the traffic. I shut off the feed. None of it surprised me.That was when the doorbell rang. I opened it to find a uniformed courier holding out a document for my signature. I signed for it without knowing what it was, closed the door, and tore open the thick manila envelope.Inside was a court summons.Plaintiff: Claudia Calmann.Defendant: Lorna Calmann.Grounds: emotional abuse.Relief sought: a public apology, plus a restraining order barring me from coming within 328 feet of her at any time.I stared at the summons and nearly laughed out loud. She was always like this, forever seizing the moral and legal high ground, casting herself as the ultimate victim. The doorbell rang again. It was Kate. She looked more exhausted than I di
