Chapter 1

They shoved me into the bedroom, and my knee smashed into the bed frame.

Before I could catch myself, the door slammed shut.

I just stood there.

There was some noise outside, then the party kicked right back up.

They kept me locked in there from noon until dark.

Nobody opened the door.

Nobody even checked on me.

I yelled until my voice gave out.

Then all I could do was lean against the door and slide to the floor, listening as the voices outside slowly died down.

My head finally started to clear.

When the apartment went quiet, the door opened.

I braced myself against the bed and got up, my legs numb.

My parents came in first, with Juliet and Paul right behind them.

Mom's eyes were red, like this hurt her too.

"Noah, here's the deal. Remember those medical tests you and Juliet took before you planned to get married?"

"We saw the results. The doctor said you had a low sperm count and probably couldn't have kids."

I went stiff.

Juliet and I had done that screening before we planned to get married.

I never saw the results. Juliet said she'd pick them up, and I didn't think much of it.

Except that wasn't really it.

Everyone else had already made the decision for me.

I looked at Juliet.

"You knew this whole time?"

She dropped her gaze.

Dad kept going.

"Juliet's an only child. This was gonna become a problem sooner or later. If she actually broke up with you, could you handle it?"

Mom jumped in.

"So your dad and I talked it over. We figured Paul and Juliet could get married first and have a baby. Then you could come back, and everything would work out."

My head buzzed.

My lips started trembling.

"A-Are you guys insane?"

Paul stepped forward, eyes red, his voice low.

"Noah, your parents are just worried about you. I've been on my own for years, and your family's basically become mine. If this is what it takes to help you keep Juliet, I'll do it."

He looked at Juliet, his gaze soft and warm.

"Besides, she's already pregnant."

My gaze dropped to the slight bump under her clothes.

"You're seriously having his baby?"

She didn't say a word.

Everything went black. My chest tightened until I could barely breathe.

Then I hit the floor.

When I came to, the apartment was dark.

I grabbed my phone. The second the screen lit up, notifications blew up.

Missed calls. Texts from coworkers. Over a hundred messages in the group chat.

I opened them.

At first, everyone wanted to know why Juliet had suddenly married Paul.

Then the comments took a turn.

[OMG, the couple I've been shipping is finally together! She's mature, he's sweet, and they're literally perfect. Obsessed!]

[Right? Paul's such a sweetheart. Who wouldn't want him? Unlike some people who have a temper and live for drama.]

I kept scrolling until another comment stopped me.

[Remember when Juliet worked late and he still made her pick him up from a bar? Like, seriously?]

[For real. Dude deserved to get dumped.]

I stared at the comments, my fingers going cold.

That night, Juliet had insisted on knowing where I was.

I'd told her not to come. It was too late.

She got upset and came anyway.

But somehow, I was the jerk in their version.

My chest tightened as I typed:

[You guys all knew?]

The second I sent it, the group chat went dead.

Then they kicked me out.

No explanation. Nothing.

I sat on the edge of the bed and let out a bitter laugh.

So it wasn't just my parents and Juliet.

My friends and coworkers had been lying to me too.

I got up and started packing.

I was done with this place.

Noah's POVJuliet sat across from me, her hands still on her knees. She'd probably imagined this reunion a hundred different ways.Me crying. Cursing her. Going after her.She hadn't expected me to be this calm.Calm enough to make her face the worst part. Her throat tightened."I'm sorry."I looked at her."Did you know I kept saying it hurt?"Her eyes instantly turned red."I did.""But you still had them hold me down."Her lips moved, but nothing came out.Because it was true.I didn't ask anything else.Didn't cry either.I didn't need her reasons anymore. My friend was the knife. My parents were the ones who drove it in.She watched me cry but chose to let me go anyway. After that, I asked to move out of the place my parents had set up so they could keep tabs on me.After evaluating me, the doctor said I still needed long-term therapy, but I could try living on my own.My parents tried to make up for everything with more money and more stuff.I didn't turn

After that, Noah started having nightmares almost every night.Always in fragments. And he always woke at the worst part.Drenched in sweat. Please..."Everyone went pale. Now they finally understood.Even when Noah remembered nothing, his body remembered one thing.Juliet meant pain.Meanwhile, the lawsuits were finally settled. Both the clinic that mixed up his test results and the psychiatric facility were ordered to pay damages. But no amount of money could bring back the Noah he'd been.Only then did the people who'd once turned against him finally shut up.Some admitted he'd really lost his girlfriend to another guy.Others said no wonder he'

When Noah said he didn't want to go back, the room went silent. The doctor called it a trauma response.Even without the memories, his body knew that house wasn't safe.So they found Noah somewhere new to live. The apartment they'd turned into the newlyweds' home was sold.Robert insisted on it.He was too ashamed to ever ask Noah to live there again. The money from the sale, plus some of their savings, went toward a small apartment for Noah.Only his name was on the deed. For once, they were actually giving something back to him.But Noah barely felt anything. It was too late. The day he left the hospital, the weather was clear.Wearing a light jacket and clutching his stuffed animal, Noah stood outside and stared at the sky for a long time. Then, like he was learning how to live again, he stepped back into the world. At the new apartment, he stood in the doorway for a couple of seconds. Then he slowly walked inside. The place was clean. No old stuff. No traces of hi

The doctor said Noah's memories were slowly coming back. With treatment, more might return little by little. They started showing him things from his past.Noah would pick something up and ask, "Is this mine?"Most of the time, he'd look at it for a second, then put it back down.Whenever Adaline watched, hope flashed in her eyes. Then disappeared. She was searching his face for any sign of the old Noah. But Noah couldn't give her that.Later, his rehab therapist, Dr. Tom Harper, showed him a video.A little bird chirped, repeating Noah's nickname. At first, Noah just watched. Then tears started rolling down his face.He didn't even know why.He only knew his chest hurt.Like he'd lost something that mattered more than he could remember.Outside the room, Adaline saw it and broke down. She finally understood. Some pain didn't disappear just because the memory did.Even if Noah couldn't remember, his body remembered what he'd lost.Meanwhile, Paul's life fell apart.

When Noah was discharged, he was painfully thin. His hair was shorter, and his hospital gown hung loose on him. While the nurse packed his things, Noah sat on the edge of the bed clutching his stuffed animal, with no idea where he was going.Robert and Adaline stood in the doorway.Adaline's eyes were swollen from crying. She tried more than once to walk over and hug him.But every step she took made Noah shrink back.So she stopped.Covered her mouth. And cried.Robert looked like he'd aged overnight, his shoulders slumped.Juliet stood the farthest away. She didn't dare come closer. Not because she'd suddenly learned to respect his boundaries.Because Noah was scared of her.The doctor said Noah needed to be transferred to a real hospital for a full evaluation and rehab. He couldn't handle any more stress, and the people from his old life shouldn't visit often."Especially her." The doctor glanced at Juliet. "He has a clear trauma response to you."Juliet slowly wen

She finally understood.None of this had ever been for Noah's own good.He wasn't infertile. There'd never been some impossible choice to make. From the start, Noah hadn't done anything wrong. And they'd pushed him so far he couldn't even remember who he was anymore. That day, Juliet rushed into his room.Noah sat on the edge of the bed, holding his stuffed animal and eating cookies. He looked up.She seemed familiar. But she scared him.Juliet's eyes instantly turned red."Noah..."He shrank back and looked at the nurse."Why does this lady keep coming here?"Those words shattered her. When Robert and Adaline arrived at the facility, both looked pale.Adaline stood frozen in the doorway. She opened her mouth but couldn't say his name.Only then did she understand.Noah hadn't been throwing a tantrum. He was her son. He'd been hurt. Angry. Fighting back.Waiting for her to choose him for once. Now, that Noah was gone.Meanwhile, Paul started to panic. The clin
