Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
Keeping my face cold, I pulled out a photo of me with my mother and held it up for everyone to see, asking Tina if she even knew what genetics were.

The moment she saw the picture, she acted like her professional authority had been insulted.

Flushed with anger, she snapped at me, “And how do we know your mom wasn’t doing the same kind of thing and dragging you along with her? Like mother, like daughter. Haven’t you ever heard that?”

The second I heard her insult my mother, all the anger I had been holding back finally exploded. I lunged at her and slapped her across the face several times.

Sam shoved me away and demanded to know if I had lost my mind.

Breathing hard, I demanded that Tina apologize, but she just clutched her cheek and shouted back at me.

“Xena, even if I played along with your lies and helped you cover everything up today, you still wouldn’t be able to hide the baby you’re carrying!

“Are you really going to wait until the baby is born before you admit you cheated on Sam?”

The moment Sam heard that, he shoved me to the floor. Then he planted his foot on my chest and ground it down hard.

Looking down at me, he demanded to know whose bastard I was carrying.

I started coughing violently. My chest hurt so badly I could barely get a word out.

Fighting through the pain, I forced myself to speak. “I just got my period two days ago. Whether I’m pregnant or not, shouldn’t you know that better than anyone?”

The pressure of Sam’s foot slowly eased, and he even reached a hand toward me, as if he meant to help me up.

But then Tina let out a long sigh.

She reached into her bag, pulled out a crumpled pregnancy test report, and held it up in front of me.

My name was on it, and the results clearly said I was twelve weeks pregnant.

I looked up at Tina. A flash of triumph crossed her eyes, as if that one piece of paper was enough to pin me to the wall in shame for good.

Once the people around us saw what looked like proof, they all started talking at once, throwing accusations at me from every direction.

Some even said I should be punished like women in the old days, so I would stop humiliating myself in public.

Then Tina, sounding almost casual, added, “For all we know, Xena’s so-called period was fake too. Maybe she made it up just to keep this hidden.”

At that, the hand Sam had reached out to help me changed direction.

He grabbed me by the hair and slammed my head against the floor again and again.

Even after my face was covered in blood, he still refused to stop. He even tried to kick me hard in the stomach.

I twisted away as fast as I could and, using every last bit of strength I had, forced myself upright.

I looked at Tina, curiosity in my eyes, and pressed her again. Since I was clearly not pregnant, where exactly had she gotten that pregnancy test report?

Tina let out a scornful laugh, her face full of provocation.

“If you say you’re not pregnant, then prove it.”

As she said that, a nasty glint flashed in her eyes. Her hand shot straight for the hem of my skirt, clearly intending to strip me in front of everyone.

Only then did the crushing pressure in my chest ease a little. Those photos had only ever existed on Sam’s phone. And now Tina was putting them on public display without the slightest hesitation.Using my pictures, she started lecturing viewers on all the so-called ways to tell whether their girlfriend was still a virgin. She even pointed at my chest and said, “Any woman built like this has definitely been around.”The livestream comments instantly filled with disgusting remarks from male viewers. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of the inside of Tina’s raised arm. A faint butterfly tattoo peeked through. That was when I finally remembered.Sam had designed that butterfly tattoo especially for Tina. His initials were even hidden in the wings.Keeping my expression calm, I casually asked Sam whether the original tattoo design could have been leaked. When he flatly said no, a bold thought began to take shape in my mind. What if the woman in those photos wasn’t me at all? What if it was Tina?I zoomed in on the photos again and again, studying every small detail. The longer I looked, the more certain I became. All at once, everything that hadn’t made sense before suddenly clicked into place. If the woman in those photos was Tina, then it made perfect sense that she had that thick stack of hotel receipts.I pointed to the bit of tattoo showing in one of the photos and pretended to study it more closely.“Tina, I’m pretty sure you have that same tattoo too. Sam only frowned and told me to stop trying to smear Tina.Meanwhile, Tina muttered under her breath that I must have planned this ahead of time and wiped all my payment records.Sam believed her without question. He grabbed my collar and demanded to know exactly who I had been cheating on him with.He went through every man around me one by one. He even suspected the elderly security guard outside my office building, convinced there had to be something inappropriate going on between us.I stared at him in disbelief. What kind of person did he think I was?The evidence was right in front of him, yet he still chose to believe every word Tina said.I let out a cold laugh and asked him who his girlfriend actually was, me or Tina. After hearing that, even the patients’ family members started wondering whether there was something going on between the two of them.A few men in the crowd started egging him on, saying he was one lucky guy to have two women fighting over him.I looked

I stared at Tina in disbelief. Then I repeated her words and asked, almost laughing, what I had done wrong. She answered without the slightest shame. According to her, if it weren’t for me, none of them would have ended up at the police station.Sam immediately backed her up and dumped all the blame on me.He even acted like it was perfectly reasonable to demand that I go to the police station and tell them everything was my fault, that I had brought it all on myself.I was so angry I laughed. They had decided I was pregnant. They refused to listen to a single word I said. And now they actually expected me to forgive everyone. It was ridiculous.I refused without hesitation.Sam grabbed me and yanked me off the hospital bed. The IV in my hand was ripped out, and blood immediately started pouring down my arm.Seeing that, family members of the patients in the nearby beds rushed over to stop him, but Tina stepped in and blocked them. She stood there in the hospital room, loudly
