Chapter 3

Author: Blue Carberry
I liked Jolene's post.

Not even two minutes later, she called. She sounded uneasy.

"Lily, you saw the post? Don't get the wrong idea. We were just messing around and taking a few pictures."

I said nothing.

She hurried to explain, "Don't worry. I made sure Ms. Page couldn't see the post."

So she knew exactly how it might look to Mom. What she didn't know was that Mom would never see it anyway.

Jolene kept going. "Lily, don't stay mad at Isaac. I've already talked to him. We'll find somewhere even nicer and make sure Ms. Page gets her wish. She's one of the most important people in my life too."

Those words made my chest tighten until I could hardly breathe.

Jolene had been one of Mom's students too.

Her family always put the boys first, and there were times Jolene barely had enough to eat. Mom would quietly make sure she had money for lunch.

During Jolene's senior year of high school, her family tried to make her drop out and get a job. Mom went to their house three times and fought for her, arguing and pleading until they finally agreed to let Jolene stay in school.

That day, Jolene threw her arms around Mom and sobbed, "Ms. Page, you've been more of a mother to me than my own mom ever was."

And now, after everything Mom had done for her, Jolene had spent the entire day fooling around with my boyfriend. She was even wearing the bridesmaid dress I'd picked out for her.

Then she acted like hiding the post from Mom made everything okay.

Jolene went on. "Lily, don't be so sensitive. Everyone in the comments was only joking. If the posts bother you, I'll delete them. But please don't fight with Isaac over this. He's tired enough already."

My eyes stung, and I couldn't listen to her go on anymore. I hung up.

I sat on the couch, staring at the few things Mom had left behind. I cried until I couldn't make a sound anymore.

A long time later, my phone lit up again. It was Isaac.

"When you're done with your tantrum, apologize. Jolene's crying. She was only trying to make you feel better, so stop being so ungrateful. Ms. Page wouldn't want to see you behaving like this either."

I stared at the screen and suddenly felt like the past few years had been one big joke.

Jolene cried, and suddenly it was the end of the world.

Mom died, and somehow I was the problem.

It took me less than half an hour to pack. The irony was that even though this was the place Isaac and I shared, Jolene had more things here than I did.

Her stuff was everywhere, in the bathroom, the closet, even the fridge. I even found one of her hair ties in the nightstand beside our bed.

I stood there holding it for a long time, and the memories started coming back.

Jolene and Isaac had both been Mom's students, but they never got along. Put them in the same room, and they'd be arguing within minutes.

Mom would play peacemaker while serving dinner. "You two are both good kids. Why can't you just get along? Isaac, give her a break. Jolene, don't take everything so seriously."

Then she'd turn to me. "Lily, they're your friends. Make sure they're taken care of."

Back then, the house always felt so lively. Mom, my best friend, and the guy I loved were all gathered around the same table.

But somewhere along the way, Isaac and Jolene developed an understanding that seemed to leave me out.

When Jolene worked late, Isaac would pick her up. If she got caught in the rain without an umbrella, he'd check on her before I did. When she got drunk after a breakup, he'd stay up with her talking until the early hours.

Whenever I got uncomfortable with how close Isaac and Jolene were, he always said the same thing.

"She's your best friend. I only look out for her for your sake. Why are you getting jealous? Don't be so petty, Lily."

Then Jolene would get teary-eyed and ask, "Lily, are you saying you don't want me as a friend anymore?"

So once again, I was the one who apologized.

I was scared of losing Isaac, scared of losing Jolene, and most of all, scared of making Mom worry.

But in the end, I lost them all anyway.

I simply replied, "Got it."I heard about Jolene through mutual friends. After she was fired, she wasn't doing well. She tried to get a teaching job, but people still talked about what she had done, and she fell apart at every interview. She couldn't bring herself to go back to her old school, and she couldn't stand hearing anyone say her name the way Mom used to.Someone said they felt sorry for her.I didn't respond.Feel sorry for her? What about Mom, lying in that hospital bed waiting for them until the very end? What about me, saying goodbye to Mom alone while I was still wearing my wedding dress?Jolene had made her choices. Now she had to live with the consequences.Another year passed before I finally went back home. It was the anniversary of Mom's death.I brought her favorite lilies and a photo of the ocean down south. She'd never gotten to see it herself, so I'd seen it enough for both of us.The cemetery looked much the same, except the area around Mom's headstone

I didn't stop Jolene, and I didn't feel sorry for her either. I just stood there watching her."Jolene."She looked up at me through her tears."Stop acting. Mom would be disgusted if she could see you right now."Jolene went rigid, her sobs cutting off abruptly.I walked over and picked up the flowers she'd left by Mom's grave. Then I took Isaac's bouquet and tossed both into a nearby trash can. They both went pale.I stood in front of Mom's headstone. I didn't raise my voice, but I made sure they heard every word."Get out. Don't ever come back here and bother my mom again. And stay away from me. Neither of you has the right to ask her to forgive you."Isaac looked at me with red-rimmed eyes. "I love you, Lily."I had waited years to hear him say those words. He rarely said he loved me. He always said love wasn't something you had to say out loud all the time.So whenever he showed me even a little tenderness, I held on to it and replayed the moment in my head for days.B

  • The Day You Never Came   Chapter 11

After Mom died, reminders of her were everywhere. There was the produce stand where she always shopped, the bus stop where she used to wait for me after school, and the flowering tree outside our building that she loved for its scent.I didn't have the energy to face any of it. I just wanted to go somewhere else and start over. Before I left, I went to Mom's grave. The cemetery was quiet, with only the wind rustling through the trees. I placed a bouquet of lilies at the base of her headstone."Mom, I'm leaving. I'm going somewhere warmer, down south. You always said you wanted to see the ocean after you retired. I'll go see it for you."I sat leaning against her headstone for a while and told her everything.I told her I'd sold the things from the place Isaac and I had planned to live in after the wedding, quit my old job, and signed up for a teacher certification exam.Mom had spent her whole life teaching. I used to tell her the job was too hard. Only now did I understand tha

I didn't open the door.Isaac stayed outside, calling my name over and over. "Lily, I didn't know Jolene did it on purpose. I swear I didn't. I thought she was just nervous. I thought we still had time. I was wrong. I was so wrong."His voice grew rougher and rougher until he was nearly sobbing. "Please open the door. Scream at me, hit me, anything. Just don't ignore me."I sat on the other side of the door, clutching Mom's photo album to my chest, and didn't move. I could hear his muffled sobs through the door.I had never heard Isaac cry like that before. He had always been proud.Even when things were at their worst, he would just grit his teeth, hold back his tears, and push through. He used to say tears were pointless and that you had to keep moving forward. But now he was crying like a child who'd been abandoned.I still didn't open the door, because when Mom died, I'd felt just as helpless. I'd called him 27 times and sent more than a dozen messages, and he hadn't answere

My phone kept lighting up with messages from Isaac."Lily, I was wrong."I'm not asking you to forgive me."Just let me do something for Ms. Page."I'll cover her medical bills, the burial costs, whatever else comes up."Please don't carry all of this by yourself."I didn't reply to a single one. Then he started calling, so I blocked his number.Early the next morning, the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, I found breakfast waiting outside with a note. It was in Isaac's handwriting."You have a sensitive stomach. Eat something first."I stared at the note and almost laughed. Of course he knew I had a sensitive stomach.Back in college, while Isaac was trying to get his startup off the ground, I was living on one meal a day. One time, my stomach hurt so badly I ended up crouched on the floor, unable to stand. He carried me to the hospital and, with tears in his eyes, promised he'd take care of me for the rest of my life. But as the business got busier, he started tell

Isaac went pale. The bouquet slipped from his hand and hit the floor, scattering petals around his feet.Jolene suddenly dropped to her knees. "Lily, please let me in. I'll beg Ms. Page for forgiveness. I know I was wrong."I looked down at her. "Don't kneel at my feet. It disgusts me."Jolene flinched, tears falling onto the floor. "I didn't mean for any of this to happen. That day, I really just…""Just what? You just wanted Isaac all to yourself? You just wanted to pose for pictures in your bridesmaid dress? You just wanted to embarrass me?Her lips parted, but she couldn't say anything. Panic flickered in her eyes.In that moment, I finally understood. Maybe Jolene hadn't been completely unaware. Maybe she'd simply gotten used to things always going her way.She was used to Isaac taking her side whenever she cried. She was used to saying she hadn't meant it and knowing I'd let it go rather than make a scene. It wasn't that she didn't realize how much that day mattered. She
