Chapter 4

Author: Guava Wood
From then on, everything about me was handed over to Jennifer. She even hid the fact that I was diagnosed with brain cancer overseas. Instead, she claimed that I had fallen in with the wrong crowd and was involved in something dirty.

She locked me away in a secluded villa in the mountains, claiming she was "doing it for my own good". Ironically, not once did she come to see me.

Now that she was going to give birth, she suddenly remembered her blood bank, which was me. Yet, she and Daniel didn't know that I had long since turned into bones, lying alone halfway up that mountain.

"Dan, does Helen still refuse to come back? She still hates me, doesn't she?" she asked, looking aggrieved as tears spilled down her cheeks.

He quickly softened his voice as he comforted her, saying, "Jennifer, you had good intentions when you did that for her. She's the ungrateful one. It's not your fault.

"I've already canceled her cards and sent people to look for her. Don't worry—I'll definitely find her before our child is born!"

Wrapping an arm around her, he walked her to the living room and sat on the couch. He lifted her swollen legs, which were bloated from late-stage pregnancy, onto his lap. He then began gently massaging them.

"Jennifer, did Helen ever mention anything about headaches while she was abroad? Or anything about feeling unwell?" he asked.

Her expression changed, mumbling, "No, of course not. She grew up in the countryside, and she's in good health! Dan, why are you suddenly asking this?"

He seemed deep in thought. "Nothing much. It's just that her room was covered in blood when I went to the villa today. You're probably right, though—she's always been healthy. She hardly ever catches a cold. How would she die of illness just like that?"

Only then did Jennifer breathe out a sigh of relief.

My soul stood by anxiously. I wanted to tell him that she was lying again. Yet, there was nothing I could do now. Even if he could hear me, he wouldn't believe my words.

He would only believe Jennifer. To him, I was nothing but a horrible woman who had been corrupted by jealousy.

Testing the waters, she said, "Dan, if Helen really refuses to come home, we should just let her be. As long as she's happy!"

His face darkened instantly. "No way! I have to make sure everything goes smoothly with your delivery. The baby matters, but you're more important!

"Besides, after all those years I've raised her, it's time she gives me something in return. A bit of blood won't kill her. Even if it did, she should still offer it willingly!"

In that instant, my entire soul trembled. How could Daniel say something so heartless? He once told me that he would always be my family. He swore that he would never let me feel abandoned ever again. Did he forget all of those words?

She lowered her head as she smiled smugly. It was as if she had heard the answer she had been waiting for.

So this is how well she had been living in my absence. I covered my face and sobbed, but a soul couldn't shed tears. I could only wail in grief.

Jennifer has always acted as the kind, considerate one. She would deliberately pull tricks in front of Daniel so that he would misunderstand me. Even now, she was still hiding the truth, trying to turn him completely against me.

"Don't talk about Helen like that, Dan. She'd be heartbroken if she heard you." Even at this moment, she was still pretending to be a saint.

He scoffed icily. Just as he was about to continue ranting, his phone rang.

I saw the screen lit up with the word "Ed". It was my uncle, Edwin Stewart, who was also a cop. Just as he picked up the call, Daniel immediately stood up, looking grim.

Uncle Ed's voice came through. "Helen's dead, Daniel!"

Daniel's eyes were bloodshot with rage. Pointing at Jennifer, he snapped, "She's nothing but a shameless bitch! We're not even officially divorced yet. How could you—"Before he could even finish, Grandpa slapped him hard across the face. "Get lost, you ungrateful bastard! Settle the divorce case today. I'm marrying her the moment it's done."The metallic taste of blood filled Daniel's mouth. He hadn't expected this frail old man to pack such a punch. It seemed that this was Jennifer's doing.Still, he didn't see her as an actual threat. There was no way he would let her carry Grandpa's child. What kind of influence could she have? Once he got rid of her, Grandpa would have no choice but to rely on his only son.Yet, he was dead wrong. Jennifer had finally seized her lifeline, so how could she easily let go? "How dare you!" Hearing Jennifer's words finally snapped Daniel back to his senses. "Could it be that Helen had suffered even more without my knowledge?" Daniel mumbled to himself."No! I couldn't die now! I had to make every single person who ever hurt me pay back, especially Jennifer, the culprit who started it all!"Daniel pulled himself together, and Grandpa finally allowed him to leave the house. The first thing he did was to rush home. My ashes had been placed there for a month. He was afraid that I would be terrified, since I was timid. To his shock, the ashes were gone. The first thing that came to mind was Jennifer. She was the only one who would take the one thing he cared about most. His call proved him right. It was her, after all!"Want the ashes back? Sure, but don't you ever talk to me about divorce again. I will be the wife of Stewart Group's CEO!"With that, she hung up. It didn't matter whether Daniel still loved her or not. Given that things had already turne

"Who gave you the right to hurt her like that? You can go to hell and beg for her forgiveness!" Daniel roared. With all the strength he had, he slammed Jennifer heavily against the wall behind her.She wailed in pain as she shielded her stomach, whispering, "Dan, our baby…"A pool of blood spread beneath her. She gazed at him in despair before passing out. Yet, he didn't seem to notice it. He simply let go and had her slump into the pool of blood. He dropped to his knees, staring blankly out the window. Moments later, he broke down in tears. When his crying finally stopped, he turned his head toward me. His sudden movement startled me—I almost thought he could see me.Yet, he looked away after a moment. He knelt there and muttered, "It's my fault, Helen. I wronged you. If only I had the guts to admit how I felt back then... I was a coward! Don't worry. I won't let anyone who has hurt you get away with it. Helen, I swear I'll cherish you in the next life!"He glanced in my directi

"Dan, you've been fooled by Helen! Her kindness was all an act! You took her in and raised her like your family, but she ended up having feelings for you. The way she looked at you was truly possessive. She wanted to come between us and steal you away from me!" Jennifer seethed. The more she spoke, the more agitated she became, like I had truly been some terrible, manipulative person.Yet, Daniel stood up and shoved her away. "You're still lying at this point, Jennifer! I already know everything. I'm done believing you. For the sake of our child, I won't make this ugly. Just leave. Once the child's born, I'll have someone pick them up and bring them to my manor."Jennifer collapsed to her knees, unable to process what she had just heard. Then, after a moment, she started laughing. "Daniel, are you blaming me for everything I did? You were the one who allowed these to happen, didn't you?""Nonsense! Why would I ever allow you to hurt Helen?"She turned to face him, staring straight

Daniel was a proud man who always thought he had everything under control. Yet, when something slipped through his grasp like this, he was bound to be furious.I could feel it. The closer we got to home, the stronger that rage grew. As soon as he opened the front door, his face turned frosty.Jennifer was having some chicken soup on the couch while chatting with her family. Seeing Daniel walk in, her eyes turned teary, and she stopped drinking her soup. Her family noticed his cold expression and immediately looked displeased. One of them said, "Jennifer's due any day now, Dan. Everything must go smoothly at this stage. Take good care of her.""She loves you a lot and always puts you first. You'd better not let her down!" another chimed in.They all started lecturing him one after another. Daniel didn't say a word and headed straight to his bedroom. When he came out again, he only said one thing to Jennifer. "Make them leave, or leave with them."Tears rolled down her cheeks. Afte
