~ Mira’s POV ~

The attendant stepped forward to conclude. The moon slid fully clear of the smoke-hole. One of Luca's three honest men gave me a nod I hadn't earned any other way.

They will let you believe it's over. That is when the third question comes.

I believed it for exactly one breath. I needed the air.

"The stone," said Corvin Blackwood, "is not finished."

And the chair of the Moot rose from the chair.

Everyone in that hall knew the rule — the chair does not leave the chair — and Corvin

~ Mira's POV ~The old ring lay past the treeline north of the estate — sunken into the earth like a crater from some war the maps didn't record, ringed with standing stones older than the Moot's, floored with sand that had drunk more blood than any river I could name. They filed in around the rim in silence, four hundred wolves in the cold, breath rising. I stood at the near edge with the necklace at my throat, because it stays on, because it annoys the right people. Sarn was there, and Westfall, come down from the horseshoe for the occasion. Nicolas stood at my shoulder and told me the history in the low voice of a man narrating a church."The night he was nineteen," Nicolas said, "the law owed him fourteen deaths. His father dead a season, the succession contested, and the old law plain as a knife: the challenger dies, and the backers die with him. Thirteen wolves backed Corvin Blackwood that night. The pack came here expecting a slaughter. It's what a nineteen-year-old does; it's

~ Mira's POV ~The house didn't sleep that night. It had forty reasons and a standing army, and I'd stopped pretending to be the exception somewhere around midnight. So I did the only thing I knew how to do with fear that had no paperwork: I weaponized grammar. I took Alba's codex to the library, because the library had a lamp, a door Matteo could stand outside of, and — I realized as I opened it — a smell of nothing at all, which after the afternoon we'd had was practically a luxury. The acknowledgments were due. Nine delegations, nine formal replies, and the form was the law: replies of tribute go out in the old tongue, in the Luna's own hand. Including the Blackwood card. Especially the Blackwood card.Which is how, at one in the morning, I was attempting to draft a letter to Corvin Blackwood in a dead language, and conjugating the verb to honor like it had personally insulted my family, when the lamp shadow shifted at the far end of the room.Luca. At the window with a file he was

~ Mira's POV ~The coffee came exactly right, so the standing order had survived the night, which meant the kitchen had survived the night, which meant "the kitchen's" was holding as official testimony. I drank it black with my own two hands and refused to feel anything about the supply chain.Tribute day began at noon. The pack came up the drive in delegations, three cars to a family, dressed like embassies. Forty wolves in wool coats stood on the gravel in the cold while Harrison received their gifts into the entrance hall with the solemnity of a man cataloguing a peace treaty, which, I was coming to understand, was exactly what tribute was. The Elders had confirmed me four days ago. This was the city of wolves arriving to check the merchandise in person. The Blackwoods sent a card. Full honors, Corvin's regrets, and Selene sent neither. I read her absence twice: insult, or alibi.Elder Westfall's delegation brought a fountain pen. The card said: ~ For the paperwork. — W. ~I was be

  • The Devil Alpha   Chapter 22: Questions

~ Mira's POV ~The study light went out at four a.m.I know because I watched it from my window until it did, like a lighthouse keeper with a grudge, and then I slept two hours of shallow, fire-lit nothing, and woke to Harrison announcing breakfast in the tone of a man reporting troop movements.Luca was already gone from the table when I came down. A single setting remained, mine. The coffee was exactly right.I looked at it for a long moment. The standing order had survived the night. I hadn't known I'd been testing whether it would until I felt the relief, and filed the feeling in the wing where I kept things I refused to examine under oath."The Luna's father," Harrison said at nine, with the pause that could hold a funeral, "has arrived."They brought my father through a side entrance, flanked by two guards and Matteo, who watched him the way a wall watches weather. My father had dressed for the occasion in the shiniest suit a man can buy on short notice and no money, and he was

~ Mira's POV ~Somewhere between the second switchback and the city lights, I remembered I was supposed to hate him.I sat up like I'd been burned. My head had been on his shoulder for twenty minutes of mountain road, a treaty violation I had no memory of signing, and the man had simply driven, one hand on the wheel, the other apparently seconded to keeping me vertical, and said nothing. He'd sent the convoy down ahead of us with Nico at its head. Whatever this car was about to become, he'd wanted no witnesses. The heater was on. It had been on the whole time, I realized. Turned to my side before I'd even noticed I was cold.Neither of us acknowledged any of it. The treaty had clauses. For a while there was only the road, and the engine, and the city coming up gold out of the dark like an argument we were driving toward."Repeat it," he said."Repeat what?""Blackwood. At the doors. The man doesn't stop people to compliment jewelry." His eyes didn't leave the road. "Verbatim, Mrs. Mor

He crossed the floor unhurried, a man for whom everything had always been brought, walking for something, for once, and stopped in front of my stone and looked — first and longest — at the necklace. At the side of the hall, Selene was watching her father. Not me. And there was something in her face that was not triumph."We asked the city about you, Mrs. Moretti. The city was generous. A school on the south
