The west conservatory had always been the most neglected part of the mansion—a sprawling glass and wrought iron skeleton, half-covered in ivy, filled with dust-laced ferns and unused garden tools.

Ayra had stumbled upon it weeks ago during her mapping reconnaissance and marked it mentally as both a potential hiding spot and a liability. Tonight, it would be her ally.

She crouched low in the shadows beneath a lifeless rose trellis, clutching the broken antenna she had pried from an old radio earlier that week.

Her breath was shallow, her hands trembling more from urgency than fear. She had timed the camera sweep cycles meticulously, calculating when each blind spot rotated. But even the best-laid plans frayed under pressure.

Her shoes made the faintest whisper against the stone floor as she approached the first camera nestled just above the conservatory entrance. She extended the metal rod, balancing on tiptoe, and shoved it into the camera's exposed wiring.

A small burst of sparks

She launched forward, vaulting the stone rail and landing hard into a patch of ivy. Her ankle twisted sharply and she bit back a cry, crawling through the underbrush. Behind her, voices grew sharper."I saw something move. Over there."A beam of light grazed her shoulder. Ayra flattened her body to the wet earth and didn’t breathe.Another flash. Another footstep."Clear.""Keep sweeping. She’s not far."Ayra waited until the footsteps retreated, then pushed herself up, limping toward the weathered arch near the gardener's old station. She was soaked now from crawling across wet moss and mud, but the cold barely registered. Her fingers found the panel behind the old trellis, where the storm drains were. She pried it open. The grate shrieked on its hinges—too loud—but it gave way. Without thinking, Ayra squeezed through, boots slipping on the metal rung as she lowered herself down.Darkness swallowed her whole. She landed with a splash in cold water, ankle buckling slightly from the ea

When their boots faded, she cracked open the door and slipped out. Blood thrummed in her ears. She wasn't used to this level of exertion, and she could feel the deep ache where her shoulder had scraped the duct in the east garden. But she couldn't stop. She wouldn't.The halls of the mansion, so elegant by day, now twisted into something monstrous. Moonlight bled through tall windows, casting long shadows that warped with every step she took. Grand oil paintings of stern ancestors stared down at her as she hurried through the portrait hall, their eyes seeming to judge her trespass. She ducked behind a marble statue when the soft click of boots on tile sounded again.Boris.He walked slowly, not with the urgency of someone chasing a fugitive but with the calm precision of a hunter who already knew the trap was closing. In his hand, a flashlight. Its beam swept lazily across the room, pausing for a heartbeat longer on the statue she hid behind—but then moving on."You really should've ju

  • The Devil's Game   Chapter 107 - Midnight Break

The mansion was a leviathan of stone and silence, sprawling over the cliff side like a beast curled in sleep. On clear days, its northern edge dropped into a chasm of endless sea and wind. Built in tiers and wings, connected by dim hallways and echoing stairwells, the estate was less a home and more a fortress masquerading as elegance. Ivy clung to the stone walls like secrets, and glass chandeliers hung from ceilings too high to clean without scaffolding. Every corridor looked like it had swallowed light whole, leaving only shadow and polished marble to reflect ghostly outlines.Ayra had learned everything about the main house intimately. Every vent. Every blind spot. Every place where the security cameras turned just a second too late. She lay motionless in her bed, her breaths slow and shallow. The antique clock on the wall ticked like a countdown. 11:59. Her muscles thrummed with anticipation. A dull ache had been building behind her temples all day, a side effect of constant fo

The message came just after dawn. The satellite phone buzzed once beneath her pillow—a soft, deliberate vibration that jolted Ayra awake. She fumbled for it in the shadows, her heart already thudding with anticipation. The screen lit up, revealing the message she had both hoped for and dreaded:“3 nights from now. Midnight. North-East cliff road. Bring no one.”—EAyra sat up slowly, the pale morning light seeping in through the edges of her curtain. Her breath fogged slightly in the cold air. That was it. The operation was greenlit. There would be no more delays, no more cautious planning. It was now a matter of execution. She stared at the message for a full minute before deleting it, letting the weight of those words settle on her chest. Eleanor had promised this would be her last chance. If Ayra failed, there would be no rescue. No second window. Just Lucian. Forever.A shiver ran down her spine, but she pushed it down. She had known this would come. She had prepared for it. Still,

  • The Devil's Game   Chapter 105 - An Early Farewell

Ayra sat cross-legged on the edge of her bed, the satellite phone nestled beneath her palm like a sleeping secret. It buzzed once. A text blinked on the small screen—a single sentence in code.Ready. The falcon flies tonight. Are you in?Her breath hitched. She had waited days for this signal. Eleanor had moved quickly. Ayra’s fingers danced over the keypad, punching in the reply they had agreed on: Sky is clear. Flight approved. It was done.A strange calm fell over her afterward, not the thrill she had expected. She glanced out the barred window, the last rays of afternoon sun casting gold across the tiles. She was going to be gone from this place soon. It should’ve made her heart leap. But something else was clawing at her now—a heaviness that clung like fog.She absently turned on the small TV embedded into the far wall. Static fuzzed for a moment before settling into a local international news broadcast. The anchorwoman was speaking in crisp, urgent tones."...still no signs of th
