ROMANO'S P.O.V

I used to like it in the Casino.

The noise, the chaos, the money, and the deals we made here. I used to like it in the Casino, until I found home not in a place, but in a person.

I parked my car in the underground lot of The Phoenix, the largest casino in all of Chicago. A gentle breeze blew past my face as my soldiers lined the way.

It's been a while since I was here. It was time to make a statement. To tell the world that Romano Cappellucci is still the same Mafia lord they should fear and cower at.

Calista's soft voice floated into my mind, and my stiff shoulder loosened a fraction. I adjusted my gun tucked in the bulletproof vest under my tailored suit.

My men parted ways as I walked through the floor. From the corner of my eyes, I saw the fearful gasps, curious eyes watching me with every step I took towards my office above

I've been away for too long.

CALISTA'S P.O.VI would leave the Villa. Not like run away—no, I'm not doing that again. But leave for a minute or two. It's been two days since the incident at Roman's office, where he put down one of his men like a rabid dog with no life value. That makes it two days of not really speaking to each other, save for little conversation if I was feeling odd or if I'd eaten or not.Roman still annoyingly insists I stay in the villa. Any time I bring up something like shopping, he orders what I need and has it brought home to me. It's beginning to get on my nerves. And for some reason, he still won't tell me why, Roman tripped the security and guards, made sure every single corner was protected. The uprightness and way he moved had all of us feel like we were preparing for war On the third day, I couldn't take it anymore. When Roman got out of bed in the morning, I pretended to still be asleep because I knew he'd try to talk to me if I wasn't, he'd try to ‘explain’ why he killed a man

CALISTA'S P.O.VIt was only the scent of amber musk and spice that made sense to me There were times when I used to have these... dreams. No, not dreams and not entirely nightmares, it's different, like I'm in a loop of some kindMy mind is on a brief suspension, and everything begins to blur. I know that doesn't make sense, but that was the point of it, none of it made any sense to meI'd regain my consciousness after this...loop passes, but for the few seconds, I have to think really extra hard to remember where I am or what happened. The scariest one—sometimes I have to remember myself who I am.Thankfully, this moment wasn't the one where I forget my own existence and my name, the only thing I'm trying to remember as I sit up in bed was what happened a few moments ago A pained sigh slipped past my lips as I sat up, clutching the side of my throbbing head.“Here” I flinched slightly at the voice. I didn't know someone was here with me. Wait, where am I?“It's me" He spoke again,

ROMAN'S P.O.VMan of the old ways my bloody foot.I watched Anito's life essence drain from his skull, the blood pooled around my Italian rug, and that pissed me off more than the dead man in front of me.I was. PissedTo. My. Fùcking. Bones.Every minute when I was away, thinking about Calista's safety was like a ticking bomb. I don't care who the fuck a person is to me; if they fail to respect my wife, their life automatically becomes irrelevant. If Anito can't respect Calista, how can I count on him as my soldier to protect her? And if he can't protect the most important person to me, what use is his life, other than to make a statement and a show of power?I didn't think before I killed him, only that I was filled with rage, but I didn't regret it one bit “You see this,” I spoke in the eerie calm only a Capo possesses. “This is the punishment for failure to respect my wife. Anyone who disrepsts her will face a more painful death”The guards didn't move, they knew better than to r

  • The Devil's Little Angel    Chapter 83

CALISTA'S P.O.VI barely registered Roman taking my wrist, leading me to our room and softly closing the door against meSaying something's about how he was in calling an impromptu meeting for the ‘threat' he ‘ordered me not to question him about Roman ordered me to stand down, not as my husband but as my Capo And that made me mad. It made me really, really mad. I wasn't his subject, and he wasn't my Capo.Roman is my husband. And I demand to know the truth about what this threat was.I clenched my fist hard by my side, annoyance morphing into anger and anger into something hotter. Roman may want to protect me, and while I don't fault him for that, his approach minutes ago wasn't working with meI've been kept in the shadows my whole life, treated like a helpless damsel in distress who could not protect herself. And that was the thing, I wanted to learn how to protect myself, I didn't want to be a burden to Roman at every attack, and he should know that. But if he doesn't know, I'll

CALISTA'S P.O VThe balcony was my place with Lilian. Her baby blue eyes were duller today, it was as if every time we were apart, something had sucked the light out of her, and I couldn't bear it.For a moment, I understood a fraction of the fear Roman felt after rescuing me from Joel's safehouse, then my eyes were tired and dull too, and I wanted it all to endLilian looks like that today, and I can't bear it.I placed my hand over her tightly folded ones. “Don't tell me that Lilian, I know something's wrong"She forced a smile, but it didn't reach her dull eyes. “It's really nothing—"“Please” I begged imploringly, softening my voice and expression. “Do not lie to me, Lilian. I am your friend, I can tell when something is wrong."Her chin quivered like she was about to cry, but Lilian shook her head, willing herself to be strong. She looked like she was about to brush off the issue again, so I tightened my hands on hersThe soft breeze from the garden blew past us, whipping our ha
