In the low light, Claire's sharp, elegant features looked almost too striking to be real.

Her smile was sweet, deliberate the kind that hooked a gaze and refused to let go.

Her eyes narrowed just slightly, the corner of her mouth curling with a hint of mystery that practically dared someone to come closer and figure her out.

There was something in that smile that defied easy description.

Beneath the black bodycon skirt, her long legs crossed at the knee, and she watched him with a look that danced somewhere between playful and dangerous.

Lucas narrowed his eyes, his focus locking onto her.

Noticing she was still watching him, he let a smirk slip through.

Claire caught it immediately. The ice was cracking.

Is he finally biting?

After a long stretch of silence, Lucas took a slow drag from his cigarette, glanced her way, and curled his lips into something almost inviting. Then he crooked one long finger, beckoning her over.

That wicked little smile caught Claire off guard for a second.

He was somehow even more attractive smiling than he'd been stone-faced. Unfairly attractive.

Pleased that he'd made the first move, she rose, crossed the room with an easy sway in her step, and settled in beside him.

The men in his booth all perked up the moment she arrived a gorgeous woman appearing out of nowhere had a way of doing that. Their eyes flicked between her and Lucas with obvious interest.

Claire's long black hair spilled over her shoulder, tracing the line of her pale throat down to her collarbone, and she looked at Lucas with eyes that seemed built for exactly this kind of moment.

"Hi. I'm Claire."

Her perfume drifted between them Yves Saint Laurent, something cool and floral with a whisper of lavender underneath.

Her voice came out sweet with just enough rasp to make it interesting.

When he didn't answer right away, she tried again. "And you? What should I call you?"

Lucas exhaled another slow stream of smoke, stubbed the cigarette out, and let the silence stretch just long enough to be deliberate.

"Lucas."

One word. Barely that. Claire thought to herself, amused. Even his own name is rationed out like it costs him something.

She leaned in closer, voice dipping into something softer. "Lucas. I like that."

Her hair brushed against his jaw as she moved, carrying that faint trace of perfume with it.

A pretty voice, a good scent, and everything else she was clearly putting on display Claire refused to believe he was immune to all of it.

Lucas's gaze slid over her, unreadable, dark as still water. A slow, knowing smile pulled at his mouth. He reached out, tipped her chin up with two fingers, and spoke, his voice low and deliberate.

"What exactly are you after?"

A chill ran through Claire he'd seen straight through her but instead of backing off, she found it almost funny.

She looped her arms around his neck instead, leaning into his face with a teasing pout. "After? Nothing. I just think you're gorgeous and wanted to say hello."

Lucas studied her, half-smiling, saying nothing.

One of the men beside them laughed. "Come on, Kane, she's practically handing herself to you. You gonna let that go to waste?"

The rest of the table joined in with knowing chuckles.

Claire settled further against him, letting her fingers trail lightly over the hard line of his chest, watching his face carefully for any crack in that composure.

He smells even better than I do, she thought. I need to know what that is.

"Your cologne," she said finally, tilting her face up toward his jaw. "What is it? It's incredible."

She let her cheek rest briefly against his chest as she said it.

Lucas's smile deepened, glancing down at the woman currently draped over him.

"Custom blend. You can't buy it anywhere."

Custom. Claire filed that away. This man had real money behind him.

She trailed her fingers over his chest again, feigning innocent curiosity.

"Is that right?" A small pause. "So if I can't buy it... would you give me a bottle?"

Lucas found himself genuinely entertained by this one throwing herself into his lap within five minutes of meeting him, and now angling for gifts already.

Is this the new playbook for gold diggers these days?

Claire smiled, leaning in like she meant to close the last inch between them and then shoved him back at the very last second. She'd perfected the art of the tease. Keep a man just hungry enough, and he'd stay interested for the long haul.Lucas, unsurprisingly, wasn't in the mood to let her get away with it.If she's going to tease, he thought, she can finish what she started. He caught the back of her head with one hand and kissed her properly this time deep, deliberate, impossible to escape. His other arm locked around her waist, holding her in place as he took his time with her.The kiss burned through whatever resistance she'd been putting up, and Claire felt her composure slipping fast. She gave in, matching him, losing track of everything except the two of them. His hands wandered, bold and unhurried, and for several long minutes neither of them noticed or cared that they were still in the middle of a restaurant. They were far too absorbed in each other to notice the waiter who

The Koenigsegg rolled smoothly through traffic.Claire turned to look at him, a teasing smile on her lips. "President Kane really is something, having a suitor that devoted."She had no intention of competing with Vanessa Sinclair for anything Lucas was already exactly her type without the added drama. He was gorgeous, wealthy, and impossible to ignore. Frankly, what woman wouldn't be interested?Lucas kept one hand on the wheel, a faint, wicked smile tugging at his mouth."Fine by me."Claire pressed on, curiosity getting the better of her. "So she wasn't lying? You really weren't interested in women before?""Wasn't. Until you."His voice came out low and easy, and something about the simplicity of it landed harder than it should have.Claire felt a small, private thrill at that.Could it be, she thought, that I really was his first?"So before me there'd genuinely been no one?"She kept nudging, patient, curious. His hands stayed loose and elegant on the wheel, pale against the bla

Claire gave herself over to it completely, no longer holding anything back. This man was demanding, intense, and utterly unlike anyone she'd been with before and she was enjoying every second of it.If I'm going to be swept up in this, she thought, I might as well enjoy the ride. There was something satisfying, too, in knowing exactly how much he wanted her. They didn't surface until well past noon.Eventually he carried her to the shower, where round two got just as thoroughly out of hand as the first. They finally emerged clean, unhurried, thoroughly spent.Claire lay stretched across the bed, boneless with exhaustion, her stomach growling loud enough to be funny.Lucas, meanwhile, had already dressed a sharp suit and tie, looking freshly composed and unbothered, like the last few hours hadn't happened at all.Even in a five-thousand-dollar suit, Claire thought, watching him from the bed, he still looks like trouble wearing a nice jacket.Lucas draped a blanket over her and stepped

Highgrove Estate sat on the western edge of Meridian City, tucked against the cool base of the hills. He drove her straight to Highgrove, the place he preferred above all others. The white Koenigsegg glided through the gates. Claire watched the grounds roll past the window: perfectly clipped lawns, a still blue artificial lake, and elegant pavilions half-hidden among the trees. Everything spoke of quiet, expensive power. The car stopped in front of a grand European-style villa. White stone walls were carved with delicate details; floor-to-ceiling windows flashed in the late light.Lucas stepped out, opened her door, and lifted her into his arms without a word. The scent of his cologne wrapped around her as he carried her inside. The living room was vast and spar

"Feel good, baby?"Morning light spilled through the curtains.Claire lay stretched across the sheets, a few faint marks scattered across her skin. She opened her eyes, found Julian watching her with that same wicked grin, and smiled back."Very.""You're something else, you know that."She leaned in and pressed a lazy kiss to his mouth. After they'd both cleaned up, Julian drove her to work in the Bugatti, the car drawing more than a few stares as it pulled up outside her building. He leaned over and kissed her cheek before she got out.She smiled, stepped out, and gave him a small wave through the open door."Bye.""I'll pick you up after work," he called after her, something warm in his voice. She hesitated only a beat before nodding, a smile tugging at her lips. She turned and disappeared into the building, her heels clicking against the pavement.Claire settled into her office chair, crossed her legs, and took a sip of water before turning on her computer, ready to get to work.T
