Chapter 5 A Dead Man

作者: Clara
(Don Mateusz's POV)

I gripped the wheel with one hand, floored the Aston Martin, and tore through the streets of Palermo toward a safe house on the outskirts.

Fifteen minutes ago, I'd received an emergency call from one of my men. A gunfight erupted at Tuscany Bistro.

I strode into the underground garage, and at once every member of the crew fell silent, straightened up, and bowed their heads in respect; no one dared meet my eyes.

My mother was dead. My father had been murdered the previous month. My sick brother Santino lay in intensive care. With no one else left, I had been forced to inherit the Don's ring and take command of the Gambino Family.

I had no interest in the underworld trade, but before he died, my father clutched my hand tightly, shoved a blood-stained ring into my palm, and begged me to protect the brothers of the Family.

Now I held absolute power in Sicily. Every order I gave was final.

I walked into the makeshift medical room. In the center, on the operating table, Sterling lay unconscious, his abdomen wrapped in bloody bandages. Beside him, on a steel cot, lay Marco's body, my brother, the one I'd grown up with.

A bullet had pierced his head. He had no breath left.

I walked beside Marco's body, hands resting on the edge of the metal cot, teeth clenched, suppressing the wave of grief and rage that surged through me.

I turned to Rocco, who stood by, his right arm scraped and bleeding, and said in a cold, hard tone, "Tell me exactly what happened."

Rocco lowered his head. "We were handling a covert casino-chip exchange in the back room. Gunmen came through the rear exit and opened fire. Marco died instantly. Sterling took a bullet protecting me. Mateusz, I think DIA agents set us up."

I dismissed the idea with a snort. "No. DIA agents may be fools, but they follow orders. If they had exact intelligence, they would have raided through the front, arrested everyone, and documented the evidence. A back-alley ambush isn't how an official agency operates."

I pulled out my encrypted phone and dialed the head of the Bonanno Family.

On the other end, a chaotic mix of shouting and rage erupted. "Don! What the hell is going on? Two of my men are dead, and one more is critically injured, this is your doing, isn't it?"

"If it had been my operation, your entire crew would already be dead," I said coldly. "I lost one man, and another is critical. Someone wants a war between our families. I'll find out who."

I hung up immediately and turned to Rocco. "The Bonanno Family lost men too. It wasn't a black-market hit. There's a third party involved."

I walked to Sterling's operating table and peeled back a portion of the bandages on his abdomen. The stitching was crude, even using transparent fishing line, but the knotting was expertly precise, avoiding all major blood vessels.

I frowned. "You stitched him? How is it so sloppy?"

Rocco quickly explained, "No, Boss. At the time of the shooting, a woman walked in to buy coffee. She claimed to be an emergency doctor. When Sterling bled out, I had no choice but to point a gun at her head and force her to stitch up the wound in the kitchen. Afterward, to keep it quiet, I brought her here too. She's now locked in the basement."

My movements froze instantly.

I looked at Rocco, raised an eyebrow. "You were ambushed and severely wounded, and suddenly a trauma doctor shows up to buy coffee?"

Rocco froze, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. "Boss, you're saying... she was sent on purpose?"

"Boss, should I have her eliminated? What if she's a spy?" Rocco made a motion to his neck.

"No," I said softly, dangerously.

"Call me Mateusz, not Boss." I paused. I had never wanted to lead the Family, and I had no taste for titles. More important, I did not want anyone knowing who I truly was.

"Yes, Boss... Mateusz," Rocco stammered.

I gave a quiet smile. "Lead the way. I want to personally interrogate her."

Four years ago, during a business meeting with the Lucchese Family, I'd seen that woman fight back against her captors. I had assumed she was dead. No one walked away from the Luccheses unscathed.

All I wanted to know was who had orchestrated this attack.

But when I saw her face, I froze.

For the first time in four years, my heart skipped a beat.

(Esme's POV)His cold fingers closed around my carotid artery, pressure balanced precisely between a caress and a killing grip.I could feel his wild heartbeat pounding against my chest. He was deciding whether to snap my neck instantly or kiss me.The next second, he forced my jaw open and took my mouth with a brutal, invading kiss.It was not a kiss. It was an attack.I struggled desperately. I knew too well how dangerous this man was: he had ordered the massacre of my entire family, he was a wanted killer on the DIA list, and my daughter Lily's life was indirectly in his hands!"Let me go." I pushed against his chest with all my strength. "I am Mateusz's woman. I wear his ring. You are his Don, and you have no shortage of women. Why would you touch the woman who belongs to him?"The masked Don paused and laughed behind the silver mask. "Not lack women? I've fucked every other woman in my life as nothing but an outlet. You are the only one who makes me want to make love, Esme, even w

(Esme's POV)I advanced with the scalpel ready and pushed through the half-open door. Charles was on his knees, frantically searching through the clutter beneath the bed.I immediately sheathed the scalpel and stepped forward, crouching down. "Charles, what are you looking for? I'll help you."As I helped clear the clutter, my hand struck a heavy black leather album. It fell to the floor and opened. My gaze caught on a faded photograph, and my breath stopped. There he was, my father! He wore a tailored suit reserved for core members of the Gambino Family and stood beside the former Don, even holding the Family's ceremonial scepter on the former Don's behalf! My father had been a DIA undercover operative. Why had he penetrated so deeply into the mafia's command circle, and why had he allowed a photograph like this to exist?A terrible suspicion seized me. Had the former Don—or the current Don—had anything to do with my family's murder? I almost asked Charles, but the question would expo

(Third-Person POV)In the dimly lit alleyway, the only light came from a flickering streetlamp.Esme heard the heavy, deliberate footsteps behind her, and every muscle in her body tightened.Drawing on the muscle memory of a former DIA operative, she spun at the bend beside a row of trash bins, dropped low beneath a possible high strike, seized her tail's wrist, and used his momentum to execute a vicious shoulder throw that drove the large man against the rough brick wall! Her forearm crushed against his throat while her other hand closed around the surgical knife concealed at her waist."Esme, it's me," the man said, raising his hands, his voice low and calm.In the dim light, Esme saw his face. It was Sterling. She immediately released her grip and stepped back, eyes sharp and wary. "What are you doing here?""I happened to be nearby and wanted to make sure Sakata's gas hadn't killed you." Sterling straightened his rumpled collar, then softened slightly at the sight of her pallor. "W

(Esme's POV)I jolted awake. The other side of the bed was empty. Mateusz was gone. The villa was unnaturally quiet. I saw no servants in the halls and seized the chance to search room by room. A false panel behind the bookcase in Mateusz's study opened into a narrow hidden chamber. On the desk inside, a sealed file lay open.I crossed to the desk. The instant I saw the scattered photographs, my blood froze. They were photographs of my family's murder. My father's limbs had been severed and the Gambino crest carved into his chest. A close-range shotgun blast had obliterated my mother's head, spraying blood and brain matter across the wall. My brother and sister bore marks of prolonged torture, every fingernail torn out.Beside it, a document stamped with the Family's blood seal clearly proved this was an order personally issued by the current Don!I clapped a hand over my mouth and fled to the bathroom. On my knees before the toilet, I vomited until only bitter bile came up. They had d

(Esme's POV)I wore a fitted emerald velvet gown with a plunging V neckline. On my wrist was an expensive diamond bracelet concealing a needle loaded with concentrated anesthetic.Using the forged identity Mateusz had created for me, Evelyn Shaw, widow of an international shipping magnate, I entered Senator Steven Sakata's private charity gala with a legitimate invitation.Sakata approached with a wineglass. He looked much older than his file photograph, his hair almost white, yet his warm, approachable smile betrayed no hint of the politician who collected trophies from his victims."Mrs. Shaw, you remind me of someone I knew overseas when I was young." Sakata offered his hand while his gaze crawled over me. "Would you join me in my private study upstairs? I would be honored to show you my antique collection."He had taken the bait. I swallowed my disgust, slipped my hand through his arm, and let him escort me into the heavily secured study. As the soundproof door shut behind us, Saka

Porcelain exploded across the floor."Mateusz has lost his mind." Jacqueline rounded on her silent subordinates. "He gouges out traitors' eyes and cuts their throats. Now he knows Esme is hiding something, yet he protects the bitch. He even shot one of our own men through the knee for her."She gasped violently, her chest heaving. Mateusz appeared in Jacqueline's doorway, immaculate in a tailored black suit. "Dinner," he said. "Come with me."As they walked toward the restaurant, Jacqueline linked her arm through his and asked lightly, "I saw Esme is still at the hotel. You did not send her away? Is she part of the Family now?"Mateusz gave no direct answer. He simply removed her hand from his arm and continued walking.Dinner time. The table remained silent, the only sound the clink of cutlery against porcelain plates. When Mateusz and Jacqueline e
