Chapter 3

Ginger
"Rum-flavored chocolates, along with a premium filet mignon. He arranged the entire menu himself."

I touched my aching head and laughed without making a sound. "Fine. I understand. I'll come to the restaurant tomorrow to confirm."

Rum-flavored chocolates. Charles remembered every little detail. He must have forgotten that I was allergic to chocolate and couldn't stand the taste of rum.

That night, neither Charles nor Carl came home.

I didn't call to ask. I knew exactly where they were. With Lena.

After lying in bed for a while, I walked through every room in the mansion.

This was my home. My marriage had started here. It was only fitting that it end here too.

After packing all my things, I went to the restaurant Charles had booked.

It was a Michelin three-star restaurant, nearly impossible to get into. People booked a year in advance and still couldn't get a table.

The waiter led me into the main hall and told me that Mr. Moretti had rented out the entire restaurant for a month. No other guests would be admitted during that time.

Charles had said Lena didn't like the smell of strangers.

I smiled faintly and looked around. Red and white tablecloths, a bouquet of red roses on every table.

On the wall hung a photo of Charles and Lena together, Carl between them.

On the table sat a handwritten card from Carl. "Mommy Lena, you'll always be beautiful. I'll always love you."

It reminded me of last night, when Carl had called me an ugly witch to my face.

In his heart, I was the villain, the ugly one. And Lena was the saint, the beauty.

The menu listed twenty dishes, every last one a delicacy from around the world.

Even as the Don's daughter, there were some I'd never tasted.

Yet Lena, the girl my father had taken in, could have it all without lifting a finger.

I walked out of the restaurant and called my lawyer.

"David, I need to change the terms of the divorce agreement. I'm giving up custody of Carl. I want every piece of my pre-marital property and all jointly owned assets returned to me. Every business under my name that Charles has been handling goes back to me."

"Of course. But are you sure about giving up custody? You'd have a very strong case."

"No. As of now, he's no longer my son." I hung up, picked up the divorce papers from the firm without waiting a single minute, and headed straight to the high-end club Charles ran.

I could hear laughter and conversation through the door before I even opened it.

Lena was sitting pressed against Charles, their hands intertwined, discussing whether to put her in charge of the arms smuggling operation.

The moment Gloria saw me, she hurled her coffee cup at my head. "What are you doing here? You humiliated Lena so badly she nearly killed herself. She's been left with severe psychological trauma. If we hadn't gotten to her in time, you'd have blood on your hands!"

I didn't even glance at her. I walked straight to Charles and threw the divorce papers in front of him. "Sign."

Charles glanced at the papers and snapped the cigar in his hand in half. "Layla, don't push your luck. I didn't come after you for nearly getting Lena killed, and you have the nerve to demand a divorce? When are you going to rein in that temper of yours?"

Isabella rushed over and slapped me hard across the face. "You apologize to Lena right now! Do you want to drive her to death?"

My ears rang. I lifted my head and looked at the group of people before me in silence.

Mark and Vivian watched me warily, as if terrified I might go after Lena.

My son Carl suddenly threw himself into Lena's arms.

"Mommy Lena, does divorce mean you and Daddy can get married? Then you can be my real mommy?"

That changed several months later, when my birthday came around again.Ryan had reserved a table at a restaurant. The moment we stepped outside, there was Charles, waiting by the estate gates. He looked haggard. When he saw me, he held out a huge bouquet of pink roses. "Happy birthday, Layla. I didn't forget this year."He looked at me with begging eyes. "I haven't contacted Lena once. She's out of my life for good."All I'm asking is one chance to make things right. I promise, from now on it'll only be you, I...""I know." I cut him off. "But Mr. Moretti, the time when I needed you most has already passed, and the love I had for you is gone. To me now, you're just a stranger. The kind I wouldn't spare a glance for if you dropped dead on the side of the road."Ryan pulled the car up and opened my door. "Let's go. It's about to rain. I don't want you catching a cold."I nodded and climbed in. Then I leaned out and said to Charles, "You probably forgot. My favorite flower was never the p

Charles reached to reject the call, but I was faster. I picked up and put it on speaker."Charles, save me! That Augusto capo broke out of prison! He's looking for me everywhere, and he's going to kill me!" Lena was screaming and crying, her voice hoarse.Without Charles's protection, Lena's claim to being a Ferraro princess was nothing but an empty title. The Augusto capo she'd burned was certain to come after her, and nothing was holding him back."Charles, have you forgotten how much we meant to each other? Save me, take him out for me, I swear this is the last time, and then I'll disappear forever!"Ryan let out a quiet laugh.Under Ryan's contemptuous gaze, Charles's face flushed crimson. "Lena, I warned you not to contact me again. If you do, I'll kill you before he even finds you!"He hung up, blocked her number, and showed me his phone. "Layla, she called me. Look, I've blocked her. I'll never have anything to do with her again!"But I'd stopped caring long ago. "Charles, I rea

Lena's feet slammed to a halt. She stared at him in disbelief. But Charles didn't spare her another look. He took my hand and led me back to our room. This was nothing like what Lena had planned. Unwilling to accept it, she went to Isabella and Mark. But when Isabella learned that Lena had conspired with an Augusto Family capo to have me killed, she collapsed from a heart attack and had to be rushed to the hospital.Mark had lost all faith in her too. He screamed at her to get out, swearing he'd put a bullet in her if she came near me again.Desperate to bring back my memory, Charles began searching everywhere for proof that we'd once been in love.He dug out the movie ticket stubs I'd saved from our first date.He found the card I'd written for our first anniversary: "Charles, thank God for bringing you into my life. I love you."He racked his brain, but that day stayed a blank. It stayed a blank until he found my camcorder. The footage rolled back to our first anniversary. There I wa

It was two weeks before I was moved from the ICU to a regular room. The room smelled strange.I opened my eyes and saw Charles sitting by my bed. His hair was a tangled mess, his stubble had grown into a scraggly beard, and his clothes looked like the same ones he'd been wearing the last time I saw him. When he saw me awake, he blinked in disbelief, then bolted out of the room shouting for a doctor.Isabella and Mark broke into smiles when they saw me awake, thanking God over and over."Layla, thank God you're finally awake.""God, you scared me half to death! That snake Lena is gone for good—your brother made sure of it!"I looked at them with no expression at all. These were the very people who had dismissed me, who had hurt me again and again. Now they were putting on this concerned act. It was nauseating. The gunshot wound in my chest flared with pain at the slightest movement. And the wounds inside, the ones that would never heal, were gifts from every single one of them.I pulled

Charles crushed the paper cup flat in an instant, his mind flashing to the blood-soaked body on the gurney. He broke into a sprint, then his legs gave out and he nearly collapsed.By the time he reached the operating room, gasping for air, the red light above the door seemed to be telling him something: this time, she wasn't throwing a tantrum. This time, they might never see each other again. He exhaled sharply.Charles's heart was hammering. He let out one breath, then clamped his mouth shut.It felt as if his heart might leap out of his throat at any second.Mark stared at the surgical consent form, his face drained of every last drop of color."How is this possible? How could she just happen to run into an ambush? I only wanted her to stop being so hard on Lena..."Isabella's eyes were red and swollen, fixed on the operating room doors, her hand tracing the sign of the cross over her chest again and again.Charles said nothing. He slowly crouched down, buried his head in his hands,

Lena blushed and pressed a finger to her lips.I kept my eyes on Charles, as though I hadn't heard a word Carl said."I'm not the one pushing my luck, Charles. You are. I haven't held you accountable for your infidelity, and you should be grateful for that. Don't forget, you got this marriage by kneeling at my feet and begging."The color drained from Charles's face. My words had struck a nerve.Lena looked at Charles with concern. "Charles, don't talk to Layla like that. She's not wrong. I'm the one at fault. I'll disappear. Forever..."Charles fixed me with a hard stare. After a long moment, he picked up the divorce papers. "Layla, you know me. I'm not a kind man. Divorcing me comes with a price."He picked up a pen, tapped it against the papers, and lit a fresh cigar."The Augusto Family is muscling in on our arms-smuggling route. Take that route back for me, and I'll agree to the divorce. But think carefully. They built their empire on contract killing. They've got ways of dealing
