Chapter 4

Ginger
Lena blushed and pressed a finger to her lips.

I kept my eyes on Charles, as though I hadn't heard a word Carl said.

"I'm not the one pushing my luck, Charles. You are. I haven't held you accountable for your infidelity, and you should be grateful for that. Don't forget, you got this marriage by kneeling at my feet and begging."

The color drained from Charles's face. My words had struck a nerve.

Lena looked at Charles with concern. "Charles, don't talk to Layla like that. She's not wrong. I'm the one at fault. I'll disappear. Forever..."

Charles fixed me with a hard stare. After a long moment, he picked up the divorce papers. "Layla, you know me. I'm not a kind man. Divorcing me comes with a price."

He picked up a pen, tapped it against the papers, and lit a fresh cigar.

"The Augusto Family is muscling in on our arms-smuggling route. Take that route back for me, and I'll agree to the divorce. But think carefully. They built their empire on contract killing. They've got ways of dealing with people you can't even imagine. You'd probably get yourself killed. I know you've lived a sheltered life and never gotten your hands dirty, so maybe you should just..."

"Done." I cut him off, slid the papers back into my bag, and walked out.

Charles sat there with his mouth half open, speechless. All he'd wanted was to watch me back down and quietly accept his affair with Lena.

"Let her go, Charles! Her father spoiled her rotten. She thinks being a Ferraro princess means she can do whatever she wants, but she's nothing but an empty name!" Isabella's voice followed me out, but I walked on as if I hadn't heard a thing.

I knew exactly what was going on. That smuggling route was always meant for Lena. Charles would've cleared every obstacle before handing it to her.

By sending me instead, he'd saved himself the trouble.

But I wasn't doing this for anyone else. I was doing it for myself, to put a final period on a marriage that should never have existed.

Halfway there, something felt wrong.

The Augusto Family had always been flashy. Their compound blazed with lights day and night. But tonight, the entire area sat in eerie darkness. Even the businesses nearby had gone dark.

Dread pooled in my stomach, but even afraid, I couldn't turn back.

The car jolted violently. I gripped the steering wheel on instinct, and the next second, bullets rained down on the car like a storm.

Given who I was, my car had been fitted with full bulletproofing.

But the firepower was too heavy. Several rounds had already punched through the glass.

Shots rang out in rapid succession. The rounds hammered in beside the driver's seat—one grazed my scalp, another buried itself in the left side of my chest.

Gritting my teeth against the searing pain, I swung the car around and fumbled for my phone with the only hand that still worked.

Carl's call came through just then. "Carl... Mommy's been shot. Call an ambulance. Tell our people to get here now..."

"Stop faking it. Daddy said you'd try to weasel your way out of this, and he was right. I'm calling to tell you that you'd better get this done. I'm so sick of you. I want Mommy Lena to be my real mom!"

He hung up.

I looked down at the wound pouring blood, and in the distance, the gunfire hadn't stopped.

Suddenly, this didn't seem like such a bad way to go.

There was nothing left in this world worth holding on to.

So maybe I should just let go.

Lena, for reasons no one could pin down, had sunk into another depressive episode and was about to slit her wrist with a razor blade.

Charles was terrified. He snatched the blade away and rallied everyone to rush her to the hospital.

While they waited for Lena's examination, he kept calling Layla's phone without pause.

Mark handed him a cup of coffee. "Still going to voicemail?"

He didn't seem to care about the answer. "Lena's fine. It's just a scratch. Some rest and she'll be good as new."

Charles nodded, staring at his phone's dark screen with a cold snort.

"That sister of yours is getting bolder by the day. She's never turned off her phone before."

Before he could finish, several nurses sprinted past him, shouting for a doctor.

Behind them, paramedics were wheeling in a gurney. The person on it was soaked in blood from head to toe, an oxygen mask covering their face.

Charles frowned at the sight. Something about all that vivid red unsettled him.

Before the coffee touched his lips, his phone rang.

His eyes lit up for a second, then dimmed when he saw it wasn't Layla's number. He answered with a hint of disappointment.

"Is this a family member of Layla's? This is Massachusetts General Hospital.

"Ms. Layla has been shot. She's in emergency surgery. We need you here to sign the consent forms immediately."

That changed several months later, when my birthday came around again.Ryan had reserved a table at a restaurant. The moment we stepped outside, there was Charles, waiting by the estate gates. He looked haggard. When he saw me, he held out a huge bouquet of pink roses. "Happy birthday, Layla. I didn't forget this year."He looked at me with begging eyes. "I haven't contacted Lena once. She's out of my life for good."All I'm asking is one chance to make things right. I promise, from now on it'll only be you, I...""I know." I cut him off. "But Mr. Moretti, the time when I needed you most has already passed, and the love I had for you is gone. To me now, you're just a stranger. The kind I wouldn't spare a glance for if you dropped dead on the side of the road."Ryan pulled the car up and opened my door. "Let's go. It's about to rain. I don't want you catching a cold."I nodded and climbed in. Then I leaned out and said to Charles, "You probably forgot. My favorite flower was never the p

Charles reached to reject the call, but I was faster. I picked up and put it on speaker."Charles, save me! That Augusto capo broke out of prison! He's looking for me everywhere, and he's going to kill me!" Lena was screaming and crying, her voice hoarse.Without Charles's protection, Lena's claim to being a Ferraro princess was nothing but an empty title. The Augusto capo she'd burned was certain to come after her, and nothing was holding him back."Charles, have you forgotten how much we meant to each other? Save me, take him out for me, I swear this is the last time, and then I'll disappear forever!"Ryan let out a quiet laugh.Under Ryan's contemptuous gaze, Charles's face flushed crimson. "Lena, I warned you not to contact me again. If you do, I'll kill you before he even finds you!"He hung up, blocked her number, and showed me his phone. "Layla, she called me. Look, I've blocked her. I'll never have anything to do with her again!"But I'd stopped caring long ago. "Charles, I rea

Lena's feet slammed to a halt. She stared at him in disbelief. But Charles didn't spare her another look. He took my hand and led me back to our room. This was nothing like what Lena had planned. Unwilling to accept it, she went to Isabella and Mark. But when Isabella learned that Lena had conspired with an Augusto Family capo to have me killed, she collapsed from a heart attack and had to be rushed to the hospital.Mark had lost all faith in her too. He screamed at her to get out, swearing he'd put a bullet in her if she came near me again.Desperate to bring back my memory, Charles began searching everywhere for proof that we'd once been in love.He dug out the movie ticket stubs I'd saved from our first date.He found the card I'd written for our first anniversary: "Charles, thank God for bringing you into my life. I love you."He racked his brain, but that day stayed a blank. It stayed a blank until he found my camcorder. The footage rolled back to our first anniversary. There I wa

It was two weeks before I was moved from the ICU to a regular room. The room smelled strange.I opened my eyes and saw Charles sitting by my bed. His hair was a tangled mess, his stubble had grown into a scraggly beard, and his clothes looked like the same ones he'd been wearing the last time I saw him. When he saw me awake, he blinked in disbelief, then bolted out of the room shouting for a doctor.Isabella and Mark broke into smiles when they saw me awake, thanking God over and over."Layla, thank God you're finally awake.""God, you scared me half to death! That snake Lena is gone for good—your brother made sure of it!"I looked at them with no expression at all. These were the very people who had dismissed me, who had hurt me again and again. Now they were putting on this concerned act. It was nauseating. The gunshot wound in my chest flared with pain at the slightest movement. And the wounds inside, the ones that would never heal, were gifts from every single one of them.I pulled

Charles crushed the paper cup flat in an instant, his mind flashing to the blood-soaked body on the gurney. He broke into a sprint, then his legs gave out and he nearly collapsed.By the time he reached the operating room, gasping for air, the red light above the door seemed to be telling him something: this time, she wasn't throwing a tantrum. This time, they might never see each other again. He exhaled sharply.Charles's heart was hammering. He let out one breath, then clamped his mouth shut.It felt as if his heart might leap out of his throat at any second.Mark stared at the surgical consent form, his face drained of every last drop of color."How is this possible? How could she just happen to run into an ambush? I only wanted her to stop being so hard on Lena..."Isabella's eyes were red and swollen, fixed on the operating room doors, her hand tracing the sign of the cross over her chest again and again.Charles said nothing. He slowly crouched down, buried his head in his hands,
