Chapter 2

Ginger
As if that wasn't enough, he grabbed a long toy gun from the table and aimed it at my head. "Bad lady, bad lady, you're being mean to Mommy Lena. I'm gonna shoot you dead!"

It fired with several sharp pops, steel pellets flying out. One of them hit me right in the eye.

Not lethal, but the pain went straight to the bone.

He stood in front of Lena with the gun raised, as if I were the enemy. "You ugly witch. If you bully Mommy Lena again, when I grow up I'll shoot you full of holes with a real gun!"

I clutched my eye, dizzy and seeing stars.

My own son, the child I loved more than anything, was spitting the cruelest words at me.

Those fake bullets had already torn through my heart.

"Carl, who is your mommy?"

Charles didn't care how I felt. He scooped Carl into his arms and held him tight. "Layla, fighting with me is one thing, but taking it out on a child?"

His face went completely dark, a vicious edge flashing in his eyes. "Lena is sensitive and her health isn't good. Have you really sunk so low that you can only pick on the weak?"

I pressed my temples, feeling them throb. "Mr. Moretti, I wasn't joking about the divorce. My lawyer will deliver the papers, and I expect you to sign."

I turned and walked out without another word.

"Layla!" My brother Mark and my best friend Vivian called after me. "You've gone too far! Lena's had a hard enough life as it is, and she still has to cater to your feelings. Look at what you've done! Where's the dignity of a mafia princess?"

I shook off Mark's grip and looked at him the way I'd look at a stranger.

"Does being pitiful give her the right to be a shameless homewrecker? Mark, I'm your sister!"

Vivian suddenly laughed. "Layla, I am so sick of this. You think just because you're the Don's princess you can look down on everyone? Let me tell you something. The woman Charles wanted to marry from the very beginning wasn't you. It was Lena!"

My heart clenched so hard I forgot to breathe.

Mark nudged Vivian and shot her a warning look.

But Vivian squeezed her eyes shut and shouted, "Let me finish! If I don't say this now, I'll explode! Layla needs to know she's been deluding herself this entire time!"

She turned to me with a sneer. "He never fell for you. But because of your father and your status, marrying you was the only way to get your father's backing and take down that illegitimate heir to become the new Don.

"That's why your brother, the one who inherited your father's position, was the one who coached him to go after you. Behind your back, he introduced Charles to all the right politicians to clear his path.

"The only thing Lena doesn't have that you do is the bloodline. In every other way, you can't even compare to her!" With that, Vivian spat out the so-called truth.

It shattered the last wall inside me.

I used to believe my marriage was a happy one. That Charles was just busy, not the type to fuss over romance.

Now I realized how laughable that had been.

I was nothing but a thief who'd stolen someone else's love by flaunting a name I was born into.

My marriage was nothing but a lie!

My best friend Vivian. She'd been the illegitimate daughter that every Family looked down on, shunned by everyone.

I was the one who'd reached out to her, given her friendship, given her a job. She'd told me she would be grateful for the rest of her life.

I looked at Mark's evasive eyes and felt the world go dark. My knees were about to buckle.

He was my own brother, yet he'd conspired with Charles to deceive me. He'd locked me in a cage of a marriage while playing the part of my loving family. Behind closed doors, he'd betrayed me right alongside Charles.

Everything Charles had said when he proposed—that he'd fallen for me at first sight, that he'd marry no one else—had become the cruelest joke of all.

Just then, a panicked shout came from inside the private room.

"Come quick, Lena's going to jump!" Charles's frantic voice sent everyone rushing back to the room.

Inside, Lena was sobbing, her body already halfway out the window.

Everyone scrambled in a panic, grabbing at her, pulling her back.

As they rushed past, Mark shoved me aside. My head cracked against the wall, and the pain was blinding.

Then Lena fainted, and Charles swept her into his arms and rushed out of the room, a trail of panicked faces behind him.

As for me, no one even glanced my way.

My phone rang. An unfamiliar woman's voice came through. "Is this Ms. Lena? Mr. Moretti reserved a private room at our restaurant to celebrate the seventh anniversary of when you first met, but we can't reach him by phone. We'd like to confirm the menu with you."

My head went blank. "I'm not Lena," I croaked. "You have the wrong number."

"Really? But Mr. Moretti left your number, listed the name as Lena, and specifically noted that you love rum-flavored chocolates..."

I froze, not quite processing it. "I'm sorry, I like what?"

That changed several months later, when my birthday came around again.Ryan had reserved a table at a restaurant. The moment we stepped outside, there was Charles, waiting by the estate gates. He looked haggard. When he saw me, he held out a huge bouquet of pink roses. "Happy birthday, Layla. I didn't forget this year."He looked at me with begging eyes. "I haven't contacted Lena once. She's out of my life for good."All I'm asking is one chance to make things right. I promise, from now on it'll only be you, I...""I know." I cut him off. "But Mr. Moretti, the time when I needed you most has already passed, and the love I had for you is gone. To me now, you're just a stranger. The kind I wouldn't spare a glance for if you dropped dead on the side of the road."Ryan pulled the car up and opened my door. "Let's go. It's about to rain. I don't want you catching a cold."I nodded and climbed in. Then I leaned out and said to Charles, "You probably forgot. My favorite flower was never the p

Charles reached to reject the call, but I was faster. I picked up and put it on speaker."Charles, save me! That Augusto capo broke out of prison! He's looking for me everywhere, and he's going to kill me!" Lena was screaming and crying, her voice hoarse.Without Charles's protection, Lena's claim to being a Ferraro princess was nothing but an empty title. The Augusto capo she'd burned was certain to come after her, and nothing was holding him back."Charles, have you forgotten how much we meant to each other? Save me, take him out for me, I swear this is the last time, and then I'll disappear forever!"Ryan let out a quiet laugh.Under Ryan's contemptuous gaze, Charles's face flushed crimson. "Lena, I warned you not to contact me again. If you do, I'll kill you before he even finds you!"He hung up, blocked her number, and showed me his phone. "Layla, she called me. Look, I've blocked her. I'll never have anything to do with her again!"But I'd stopped caring long ago. "Charles, I rea

Lena's feet slammed to a halt. She stared at him in disbelief. But Charles didn't spare her another look. He took my hand and led me back to our room. This was nothing like what Lena had planned. Unwilling to accept it, she went to Isabella and Mark. But when Isabella learned that Lena had conspired with an Augusto Family capo to have me killed, she collapsed from a heart attack and had to be rushed to the hospital.Mark had lost all faith in her too. He screamed at her to get out, swearing he'd put a bullet in her if she came near me again.Desperate to bring back my memory, Charles began searching everywhere for proof that we'd once been in love.He dug out the movie ticket stubs I'd saved from our first date.He found the card I'd written for our first anniversary: "Charles, thank God for bringing you into my life. I love you."He racked his brain, but that day stayed a blank. It stayed a blank until he found my camcorder. The footage rolled back to our first anniversary. There I wa

It was two weeks before I was moved from the ICU to a regular room. The room smelled strange.I opened my eyes and saw Charles sitting by my bed. His hair was a tangled mess, his stubble had grown into a scraggly beard, and his clothes looked like the same ones he'd been wearing the last time I saw him. When he saw me awake, he blinked in disbelief, then bolted out of the room shouting for a doctor.Isabella and Mark broke into smiles when they saw me awake, thanking God over and over."Layla, thank God you're finally awake.""God, you scared me half to death! That snake Lena is gone for good—your brother made sure of it!"I looked at them with no expression at all. These were the very people who had dismissed me, who had hurt me again and again. Now they were putting on this concerned act. It was nauseating. The gunshot wound in my chest flared with pain at the slightest movement. And the wounds inside, the ones that would never heal, were gifts from every single one of them.I pulled

Charles crushed the paper cup flat in an instant, his mind flashing to the blood-soaked body on the gurney. He broke into a sprint, then his legs gave out and he nearly collapsed.By the time he reached the operating room, gasping for air, the red light above the door seemed to be telling him something: this time, she wasn't throwing a tantrum. This time, they might never see each other again. He exhaled sharply.Charles's heart was hammering. He let out one breath, then clamped his mouth shut.It felt as if his heart might leap out of his throat at any second.Mark stared at the surgical consent form, his face drained of every last drop of color."How is this possible? How could she just happen to run into an ambush? I only wanted her to stop being so hard on Lena..."Isabella's eyes were red and swollen, fixed on the operating room doors, her hand tracing the sign of the cross over her chest again and again.Charles said nothing. He slowly crouched down, buried his head in his hands,

Lena blushed and pressed a finger to her lips.I kept my eyes on Charles, as though I hadn't heard a word Carl said."I'm not the one pushing my luck, Charles. You are. I haven't held you accountable for your infidelity, and you should be grateful for that. Don't forget, you got this marriage by kneeling at my feet and begging."The color drained from Charles's face. My words had struck a nerve.Lena looked at Charles with concern. "Charles, don't talk to Layla like that. She's not wrong. I'm the one at fault. I'll disappear. Forever..."Charles fixed me with a hard stare. After a long moment, he picked up the divorce papers. "Layla, you know me. I'm not a kind man. Divorcing me comes with a price."He picked up a pen, tapped it against the papers, and lit a fresh cigar."The Augusto Family is muscling in on our arms-smuggling route. Take that route back for me, and I'll agree to the divorce. But think carefully. They built their empire on contract killing. They've got ways of dealing
