Chapter 1

I went back to the hotel to pack, and the butler knocked and came in.

"Miss Cassie, this suite is reserved as the Don's bridal suite. Your authorization expired at two o'clock this afternoon. Also, the custom gown you are wearing was purchased on Family business. The balance is thirty thousand dollars, and it has to be settled by you personally."

Elena came back and even the dress on my body stopped being mine. My phone buzzed. Lucian. His voice was as gentle as it had always been. "You heard all of it, didn't you."

"Yes."

"You should understand that none of this is me betraying you. It's me collecting ten years of justice for Elena, after everything she suffered."

Seven years of tenderness played back in front of me. When I was young and my father's enemies ran us down and I went down and hurt my leg, he carried me on his back while we ran. When the gang wars broke me, he sat up with me all night. When the Family's rules closed in on me, he smoothed things over for me, and he was gentle then too.

All that old gentleness turned into a blade pointed at me. "You've worn the gown, so it's secondhand now. It won't do for Elena. Keep it."

To him the wedding was a way to soothe my sister, and two soft sentences were the greatest mercy he could show me. I asked him, "And the thirty thousand?"

"Elena had nothing for all those years she was drifting. Everything has to be replaced now that she's home, and that costs a lot. Pay it yourself."

Elena's voice came through the phone, thick with tears. "Don't blame Cassie. She just can't take it in all at once." It sounded like she was defending me. What it actually said was that I harbored hostility toward her.

Lucian's tone softened. "This is what she owes you. Don't blame yourself."

When he was done comforting her, he spoke again. "You have to come to the private Family dinner tonight. You'll apologize to Elena in front of everyone. That's the only way this gets closed."

"And then?"

"And then we go on the way we always have." He said it like it was obvious. "The wedding is only a ceremony. The one whose name is on the license with me is you. I never once thought of giving you up."

In his plan, he got to marry Elena in front of the whole world, but I wasn't allowed to cry, let alone make a scene. The call ended. The butler stood off to one side, uncomfortable.

The treatments had already burned through every cent of my savings, and there was only one valuable thing left on me. I didn't want to make trouble for the butler, so I had no choice but to take out the specialized painkiller the hospital had just filled for me. A single ampoule was worth a fortune. Maybe he pitied me, because he left one behind.

The cold rain of late autumn hit my face, and I had nothing on but a thin dress. At the bottom of the steps, my brother's black armored sedan sat waiting. The window slid down. His voice was cold. "Get in."

"I need to go to the hospital for my medication." I held onto the freezing door. Even standing was hard.

"This is the Family's first gathering since Elena came home. Don't throw a tantrum, Cassie." When I still didn't move, Marcus eased up. "Cassie, I know you feel wronged. But you were in the wrong first, so don't hold it against Lucian for putting it harshly."

Looking at that face, I remembered when the whole family was on the run. He carried me on his back through all of it, and even when he fell and got hurt he wouldn't let me get so much as a scrape. Marcus used to say that if I got hurt, if I lost a single layer of skin, it meant he had failed as my brother.

The brother who had once spent everything he had to keep me safe now thought giving me a hand was too much trouble. "Marcus, I really don't feel well. I can't hold on." My voice shook, pleading.

"You've been like this since you were little. The second something doesn't go your way you play sick." He sighed lightly. "Be good. Once you've apologized, I'll drive you to the hospital myself. All right?"

In the end I got into the car. It didn't head for the old family estate. It headed for Lucian's private wedding house downtown. The detached villa was filled with flowers, and at the end of the red carpet hung an enormous photograph of Lucian and Elena.

The house blazed with light. My mother was gently kneading Elena's shoulders, and the ache in her eyes was impossible to hide. "Elena, all this jewelry must be exhausting you." My father stood nearby with his face in his hands, weeping as he told the arriving guests how much he had missed her.

Lucian saw me come in and gave me a flat look. "Finally. There's no child the right age in the Family, so go put on the flower girl's dress. You'll bring the bouquet later."

"Why am I the one bringing flowers?" I said.

Elena took his arm, her smile soft and pure. "It only counts as a real blessing if you're the one who hands me the flowers, Cassie. And it counts as you making up for it sincerely."

Violent dizziness swept over me. Only my grip on the shoe cabinet in the entryway kept me off the floor.

Elena had the longest sentence, and by the time she came out she was the only one left. Everything she had been promised was gone. The organization had collapsed because of her, and everyone called her a witch. She was walking down the street with no destination when she caught sight of a dress in a shop window. It was the one she had worn on her wedding day.She mistook the salesgirl inside for me, charged in, and grabbed her by the hair. "Cassie, weren't you dead? Why are you still taking my things? You took Dad, Mom, my brother, and Lucian, and that still isn't enough? Now you want my gown too?"The salesgirl was knocked to the floor and people rushed to pull them apart. Elena was dragged off and sat on the floor, wailing. "Say something! Why won't you answer me!"But when she opened her eyes, everything around her terrified her. My face was gone and all that was left was wreckage. Her mind broke and they committed her to a psychiatric hospital. Sometimes she remembered the past and

Rosa took my body to be cremated and scattered the ashes into the sea. "Princess, you're free now."To atone, Lucian bought a stretch of that coast and set up a headstone for me.Weighed down by guilt, my parents sold off the family's assets and founded a charity in my name. After they were released, they came to my grave every All Souls' Day.My mother knitted a new toy and set it in front of my headstone. "When Mom isn't here, will you let this keep you company?""Cassie, all of it was Mom's fault. You've never come into my dreams. Is it because you still won't forgive me?" She opened her eyes, but there was no answer. My father stood far back from me and confessed, blaming himself. "I shouldn't have forced you. The port land was your grandmother's to give you."My father was old, and before long he fell ill. My mother begged Marcus for help, but no matter how many times she called, the line never went through.Only then did she understand how hopeless I had been. After my father die

When the maid finished, my mother wept aloud. "I only exchanged a few extra words with the vendor. I never thought Elena would wander off."She had buried the truth to escape the blame. The maid was dismissed for negligence, and even after my father learned the truth later, he never showed any intention of clearing my name."It's over and done with. Don't bring it up again.""We've come this far. Who takes the blame is a small thing."Elena knew perfectly well herself. She simply hated me, her sister, more than she hated our mother.I got to grow up inside the Family, while she had to live in someone else's house.Lucian drove his fist into the glass in front of him."So all of you knew the whole time that Cassie was innocent?"The only answer he got was silence. The letters between the two of them were dug up.Before the wedding, Elena had asked him, "What if Cassie gets upset?""Cassie is easy to soothe. I apologize and it's fine."Elena pressed further, "What if she loses her temper

Elena was found the day after she went missing, but every one of them kept it from me. Family men found her in a toy store. It was half a day before I heard about it at all.Once they saw they couldn't hide it any longer they admitted it and said they were bringing her home. My mother said the fright had taken her memory and she didn't recognize anyone. But the truth was that Elena hated me to the bone."She lost me. She doesn't deserve to be my sister. Does she know how frightened I was, crouching alone at the side of the road? Does she know how dangerous the night is?"The elders of the Family suggested that the children were still young and the two of us should meet and repair things. My parents chose instead to send her to distant relatives and to tell the world she still hadn't been found. "If Elena sees Cassie it will scar her. Better not to let them meet."Marcus flew out to see her every week. Lucian knew as well. Seven years ago, at an underworld gala, he came over and asked m

The police had the doctor take my body away, and the hospital held it for the time being. The medical records and test results Elena had torn up, along with the pharmacy receipts, were pieced back together sheet by sheet and laid out in front of them all.Lucian still refused to accept it. "Cassie isn't dead. She was tired, she's only sleeping..."In the interrogation room an officer pressed him. "The victim told you repeatedly and clearly that she was critically ill. Why did you refuse to let her get treatment?"Lucian's voice was full of self-blame. "I thought she was joking with me. Ever since she was little she liked using illness to avoid things. It never occurred to me it could be real this time. I only wanted her to break the habit.""She told you plainly that she wouldn't last the day.""I thought she was just sulking."In the next room, my parents and Marcus told an identical story."We watched her grow up. How could we hurt her? We locked the door because we were afraid she'd

My soul drifted slowly up into the air, and I watched the five of them below me without any feeling at all."Cassie?" His fingers trembled as he tried again. "Don't scare me."Marcus pushed him aside, clearly tense now. "Cassie always used to fake fainting to scare us. She's ticklish."He reached over and lightly tickled my stomach. But I didn't react at all.My mother panicked. "Cassie, Mom knows you're hurting. Mom won't push you to sign anymore. Wake up, all right?"Elena shrank back, sensing something was wrong too, but her voice stayed just as wounded. "Is she doing this to get back at me on purpose? There are so many people here today. Does she have to humiliate me?"Lucian wiped the cold sweat off his forehead and pointed at the clock on the wall. "Cassie must be playing a game with us. We wait three minutes. She won't be able to hold it and she'll wake up."But five full minutes passed and I didn't move. Finally my father took out his hearing aid with shaking hands and pressed
