Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Forty-nine
A used ampoule fell out of my pocket. My mother saw it and quickly kicked it under the sofa. "More headache medicine, I assume. There are a lot of guests today, so don't take it out where people can see it."

Everyone watched her do it, but nobody cared, because in their eyes this was just another one of my little performances.

Lucian came over and smoothed my hair back. "The Family announcement is today. Be sincere about this. Once Elena isn't angry anymore, I'll still take you home tonight and our engagement stands. Be good."

The moment he finished, Elena threw a maid's apron at me. "There's nothing else in the house, so just make do with this, Cassie."

She led me into a bedroom herself, but she had deliberately left a freshly opened box of ultra-thin condoms on the table. The bed was covered with toys of every kind and lingerie, and my own things had been dumped in the trash.

Beside the trash can was a hotel welcome card. Registered guests: Lucian, Elena.

The date was the day the organization was attacked. The old estate I was holding came under fire from a rival crew, and the communication lines were cut. One of my men risked his life to send the last transmission to Lucian. I thought help would come fast. What came instead was word that he was dealing with something more difficult.

He arrived before dawn, exhausted, held me tight and apologized in a low voice, swore he would never fail me, swore that after the wedding he would make up for every debt twice over. It turned out that the urgent Family business that night was one long good night with Elena.

I crushed the card in my fist, and the pain in my chest felt like bleeding. "How long has this been going on?"

"Don't ask things that hurt everyone." He lowered his voice. "Elena has been through so much. Spending more time with her is me making amends on your behalf."

My voice shook when I asked, "Making amends in bed?"

Marcus strode over and pulled the card out of my hand, trying to settle me down. "It's ordinary courtesy between Family members. Lucian has stood by you for seven years. We've all seen how much he loves you."

All I could think was how absurd those years of company had been.

Elena leaned against Lucian's shoulder, idly stroking the key to the Family vault at her throat. "Whenever I was unhappy, Lucian would fly out to my hiding place in secret to be with me. He said you were too rigid, Cassie. Boring."

That summer, my mother and I had gone out to the street to find food. Elena said she was too hungry to walk any farther, so I told her to wait right there. Three minutes, that was all. And when I came back, she was gone.

For a full year the Family used every underworld contact it had to search for her, and there was nothing. Afterward my mother bought me clothes and toys, crying while she told me it wasn't my fault. My father dropped his business and watched me constantly, terrified I would do something to myself. Marcus ordered that no one in the Family was ever to bring it up again. I was naive enough to think they were sparing me the guilt because it hurt them to see me suffer. All of it was a carefully woven lie.

I looked at Elena. "You came back a long time ago, didn't you?" My mother pushed her behind her back. "That's all in the past. Stop asking."

Lucian stroked Elena's hair, his voice extraordinarily soft. "From now on this house runs the way you say it does. Nobody will dare mistreat you again."

When Elena nodded, the ring on her hand clicked against the necklace. That necklace was the key to the vault, the thing I had begged for countless times and never gotten. Lucian always said I was too green to manage the organization's internal affairs.

The last time, I made a deal with him. If I could land the European arms contract, he would take me into the vault. He gave a short laugh. "It'll all be yours once we're married. There's no rush." But what actually belonged to me was every filthy, exhausting job the organization had.

My father looked at me, stone-faced. "Don't fight your sister over something this small. The love we give you doesn't hinge on it."

"Everything in there is money I saved over the years." The organization had needed nothing but cash during the expansion, and the older savings were long spent. What sat in that vault now was what I had earned negotiating deals day and night.

Lucian used to say it would be a fund for our children someday, and then he turned around and used it to buy Elena a new car and a new house.

"It's Family property. Anyone should be able to use it." Lucian said it like it was the most reasonable thing in the world. "All of it is me making amends for you. You keep saying you love me and love your family. Can't you show even this much tolerance?"

That sentence sickened me until the room tipped and my vision blurred. When I came back to myself, my last ampoule had somehow fallen out.

Elena picked up the painkiller and pretended to be puzzled. "Cassie, you actually went out and bought this just to sell the act?"

"Give that back." I moved fast. The ampoule slipped free and shattered on the floor.

My mother shielded Elena instantly, her voice full of blame. "Are you insane? What if you'd hurt her!"

"That's the medicine keeping me alive." I braced myself on the table, shaking all over.

"A little ache here and there. Grit your teeth and it passes," my father snapped.

Elena bent to gather the pieces, sniffling. "Don't be angry, Cassie. I'll pick it up for you." But the liquid had already soaked into the carpet. Not one drop was left.

Lucian watched the whole thing and gently wiped her tears away. "Don't touch that filthy stuff. I'll have someone buy Cassie more later."

Elena had the longest sentence, and by the time she came out she was the only one left. Everything she had been promised was gone. The organization had collapsed because of her, and everyone called her a witch. She was walking down the street with no destination when she caught sight of a dress in a shop window. It was the one she had worn on her wedding day.She mistook the salesgirl inside for me, charged in, and grabbed her by the hair. "Cassie, weren't you dead? Why are you still taking my things? You took Dad, Mom, my brother, and Lucian, and that still isn't enough? Now you want my gown too?"The salesgirl was knocked to the floor and people rushed to pull them apart. Elena was dragged off and sat on the floor, wailing. "Say something! Why won't you answer me!"But when she opened her eyes, everything around her terrified her. My face was gone and all that was left was wreckage. Her mind broke and they committed her to a psychiatric hospital. Sometimes she remembered the past and

Rosa took my body to be cremated and scattered the ashes into the sea. "Princess, you're free now."To atone, Lucian bought a stretch of that coast and set up a headstone for me.Weighed down by guilt, my parents sold off the family's assets and founded a charity in my name. After they were released, they came to my grave every All Souls' Day.My mother knitted a new toy and set it in front of my headstone. "When Mom isn't here, will you let this keep you company?""Cassie, all of it was Mom's fault. You've never come into my dreams. Is it because you still won't forgive me?" She opened her eyes, but there was no answer. My father stood far back from me and confessed, blaming himself. "I shouldn't have forced you. The port land was your grandmother's to give you."My father was old, and before long he fell ill. My mother begged Marcus for help, but no matter how many times she called, the line never went through.Only then did she understand how hopeless I had been. After my father die

When the maid finished, my mother wept aloud. "I only exchanged a few extra words with the vendor. I never thought Elena would wander off."She had buried the truth to escape the blame. The maid was dismissed for negligence, and even after my father learned the truth later, he never showed any intention of clearing my name."It's over and done with. Don't bring it up again.""We've come this far. Who takes the blame is a small thing."Elena knew perfectly well herself. She simply hated me, her sister, more than she hated our mother.I got to grow up inside the Family, while she had to live in someone else's house.Lucian drove his fist into the glass in front of him."So all of you knew the whole time that Cassie was innocent?"The only answer he got was silence. The letters between the two of them were dug up.Before the wedding, Elena had asked him, "What if Cassie gets upset?""Cassie is easy to soothe. I apologize and it's fine."Elena pressed further, "What if she loses her temper

Elena was found the day after she went missing, but every one of them kept it from me. Family men found her in a toy store. It was half a day before I heard about it at all.Once they saw they couldn't hide it any longer they admitted it and said they were bringing her home. My mother said the fright had taken her memory and she didn't recognize anyone. But the truth was that Elena hated me to the bone."She lost me. She doesn't deserve to be my sister. Does she know how frightened I was, crouching alone at the side of the road? Does she know how dangerous the night is?"The elders of the Family suggested that the children were still young and the two of us should meet and repair things. My parents chose instead to send her to distant relatives and to tell the world she still hadn't been found. "If Elena sees Cassie it will scar her. Better not to let them meet."Marcus flew out to see her every week. Lucian knew as well. Seven years ago, at an underworld gala, he came over and asked m

The police had the doctor take my body away, and the hospital held it for the time being. The medical records and test results Elena had torn up, along with the pharmacy receipts, were pieced back together sheet by sheet and laid out in front of them all.Lucian still refused to accept it. "Cassie isn't dead. She was tired, she's only sleeping..."In the interrogation room an officer pressed him. "The victim told you repeatedly and clearly that she was critically ill. Why did you refuse to let her get treatment?"Lucian's voice was full of self-blame. "I thought she was joking with me. Ever since she was little she liked using illness to avoid things. It never occurred to me it could be real this time. I only wanted her to break the habit.""She told you plainly that she wouldn't last the day.""I thought she was just sulking."In the next room, my parents and Marcus told an identical story."We watched her grow up. How could we hurt her? We locked the door because we were afraid she'd

My soul drifted slowly up into the air, and I watched the five of them below me without any feeling at all."Cassie?" His fingers trembled as he tried again. "Don't scare me."Marcus pushed him aside, clearly tense now. "Cassie always used to fake fainting to scare us. She's ticklish."He reached over and lightly tickled my stomach. But I didn't react at all.My mother panicked. "Cassie, Mom knows you're hurting. Mom won't push you to sign anymore. Wake up, all right?"Elena shrank back, sensing something was wrong too, but her voice stayed just as wounded. "Is she doing this to get back at me on purpose? There are so many people here today. Does she have to humiliate me?"Lucian wiped the cold sweat off his forehead and pointed at the clock on the wall. "Cassie must be playing a game with us. We wait three minutes. She won't be able to hold it and she'll wake up."But five full minutes passed and I didn't move. Finally my father took out his hearing aid with shaking hands and pressed
