Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Forty-nine
That medicine was the last supply in all of New York. Bringing more in from outside would take a week at best. "Lucian, I don't think I'll make it through tonight."

The whole room burst out laughing. Marcus laughed until tears ran. "Cassie, you'd invent a joke like that just to get out of being the flower girl?"

My mother wiped the sweat off my forehead. "Cassie, how are you still like this? When you were small and couldn't win against Elena, you played sick. It's been all these years. It's time you outgrew it."

"I'm not faking." I had no strength left to argue.

"All right, all right, you're not." She nodded the way you nod at a child. "Once you've handed over the flowers and seen Elena through the ceremony, we'll take you to the hospital. All right?"

To the cheering of the guests, I carried the bouquet and put it in Elena's hands. The photographer called everyone in for pictures, and I stood in a yellowed apron, squeezed to the very edge of the frame like an outsider nobody had counted on.

When the photographs were done, my father produced a property transfer agreement and slid it in front of me. "The Family's port operation was registered in your name. Elena is back now, so it should go to her."

That port was left to me by my late grandmother. On her deathbed she took my hand in hers and said a girl needs property of her own if she wants to stand on solid ground in an organization like ours.

"You've had ten peaceful years. That's enough." My father pushed the agreement closer. "Sign it and you can still live here. Nobody's love for you changes. Don't worry."

Elena pouted. "But Lucian said this house is for me. If Cassie moves in, there won't be anywhere to put my things."

Lucian spoke without heat. "Cassie, the organization has a warehouse standing empty. I sent men to fix it up. It's quiet and out of the way, good for you to convalesce."

That warehouse was where I hid with him for two years, the worst and poorest years, when he had just come into the underworld and the Family had no footing yet. The walls leaked air on all four sides and rats and roaches crawled through it, and I stayed with him through the darkest stretch of his life without ever complaining about the hardship. Yet now the same place was the charity he was handing me.

"I won't sign."

Marcus patted my shoulder. "Don't be difficult. Elena suffered more in those missing years than you can imagine. You stay in the warehouse a few days and we'll come get you. It's temporary. Once she's calmed down, we're a family again."

The pain tore through me and my vision doubled and blurred. I had no strength left to argue. "I need to go to the hospital."

Lucian seized my wrist, forceful now. "Every Family member is here today. If you call an ambulance, are you trying to make them all think badly of Elena? Hold on one more hour. When the dinner is over I'll take you to the hospital myself."

"I really can't hold on." The pain had me barely standing. In the struggle my phone slid out of my palm.

Elena snatched it up first, something vicious flashing in her eyes. "Are you trying to call someone for help, so you can say we abused you?"

She pressed the power button and pushed the phone into her own pocket. "Sign, and I'll give it back."

Family relatives and the old men of the underworld arrived one after another. Nobody spared a thought for whether I lived or died. They were all listening to her describe ten years of hardship and wandering, how she had lived on the streets and been preyed on and nearly never saw her family again. The whole family embraced her. It was very warm, very moving.

I braced myself against the wall and slowly straightened up. Just then one of my men brought me my medical file. Now they would have to believe I wasn't faking.

Before I could get a word out, she found a pretext and had my man seized. Then she slapped me across the face and dropped her voice on purpose. "Cassie, you'll never know how hopeless those three minutes were, waiting for you ten years ago. Today you pay it back with interest."

Then she tore my medical records to shreds right in front of me.

Elena had the longest sentence, and by the time she came out she was the only one left. Everything she had been promised was gone. The organization had collapsed because of her, and everyone called her a witch. She was walking down the street with no destination when she caught sight of a dress in a shop window. It was the one she had worn on her wedding day.She mistook the salesgirl inside for me, charged in, and grabbed her by the hair. "Cassie, weren't you dead? Why are you still taking my things? You took Dad, Mom, my brother, and Lucian, and that still isn't enough? Now you want my gown too?"The salesgirl was knocked to the floor and people rushed to pull them apart. Elena was dragged off and sat on the floor, wailing. "Say something! Why won't you answer me!"But when she opened her eyes, everything around her terrified her. My face was gone and all that was left was wreckage. Her mind broke and they committed her to a psychiatric hospital. Sometimes she remembered the past and

Rosa took my body to be cremated and scattered the ashes into the sea. "Princess, you're free now."To atone, Lucian bought a stretch of that coast and set up a headstone for me.Weighed down by guilt, my parents sold off the family's assets and founded a charity in my name. After they were released, they came to my grave every All Souls' Day.My mother knitted a new toy and set it in front of my headstone. "When Mom isn't here, will you let this keep you company?""Cassie, all of it was Mom's fault. You've never come into my dreams. Is it because you still won't forgive me?" She opened her eyes, but there was no answer. My father stood far back from me and confessed, blaming himself. "I shouldn't have forced you. The port land was your grandmother's to give you."My father was old, and before long he fell ill. My mother begged Marcus for help, but no matter how many times she called, the line never went through.Only then did she understand how hopeless I had been. After my father die

When the maid finished, my mother wept aloud. "I only exchanged a few extra words with the vendor. I never thought Elena would wander off."She had buried the truth to escape the blame. The maid was dismissed for negligence, and even after my father learned the truth later, he never showed any intention of clearing my name."It's over and done with. Don't bring it up again.""We've come this far. Who takes the blame is a small thing."Elena knew perfectly well herself. She simply hated me, her sister, more than she hated our mother.I got to grow up inside the Family, while she had to live in someone else's house.Lucian drove his fist into the glass in front of him."So all of you knew the whole time that Cassie was innocent?"The only answer he got was silence. The letters between the two of them were dug up.Before the wedding, Elena had asked him, "What if Cassie gets upset?""Cassie is easy to soothe. I apologize and it's fine."Elena pressed further, "What if she loses her temper

Elena was found the day after she went missing, but every one of them kept it from me. Family men found her in a toy store. It was half a day before I heard about it at all.Once they saw they couldn't hide it any longer they admitted it and said they were bringing her home. My mother said the fright had taken her memory and she didn't recognize anyone. But the truth was that Elena hated me to the bone."She lost me. She doesn't deserve to be my sister. Does she know how frightened I was, crouching alone at the side of the road? Does she know how dangerous the night is?"The elders of the Family suggested that the children were still young and the two of us should meet and repair things. My parents chose instead to send her to distant relatives and to tell the world she still hadn't been found. "If Elena sees Cassie it will scar her. Better not to let them meet."Marcus flew out to see her every week. Lucian knew as well. Seven years ago, at an underworld gala, he came over and asked m

The police had the doctor take my body away, and the hospital held it for the time being. The medical records and test results Elena had torn up, along with the pharmacy receipts, were pieced back together sheet by sheet and laid out in front of them all.Lucian still refused to accept it. "Cassie isn't dead. She was tired, she's only sleeping..."In the interrogation room an officer pressed him. "The victim told you repeatedly and clearly that she was critically ill. Why did you refuse to let her get treatment?"Lucian's voice was full of self-blame. "I thought she was joking with me. Ever since she was little she liked using illness to avoid things. It never occurred to me it could be real this time. I only wanted her to break the habit.""She told you plainly that she wouldn't last the day.""I thought she was just sulking."In the next room, my parents and Marcus told an identical story."We watched her grow up. How could we hurt her? We locked the door because we were afraid she'd

My soul drifted slowly up into the air, and I watched the five of them below me without any feeling at all."Cassie?" His fingers trembled as he tried again. "Don't scare me."Marcus pushed him aside, clearly tense now. "Cassie always used to fake fainting to scare us. She's ticklish."He reached over and lightly tickled my stomach. But I didn't react at all.My mother panicked. "Cassie, Mom knows you're hurting. Mom won't push you to sign anymore. Wake up, all right?"Elena shrank back, sensing something was wrong too, but her voice stayed just as wounded. "Is she doing this to get back at me on purpose? There are so many people here today. Does she have to humiliate me?"Lucian wiped the cold sweat off his forehead and pointed at the clock on the wall. "Cassie must be playing a game with us. We wait three minutes. She won't be able to hold it and she'll wake up."But five full minutes passed and I didn't move. Finally my father took out his hearing aid with shaking hands and pressed
