Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Forty-nine
When the dinner started, Lucian noticed something was wrong with my face and helped me inside to sit down.

He saw how pale I was and assumed I was cold, so he draped a wool coat over my shoulders. "Elena is only sulking. Don't take it to heart."

Every time he ordered clothes from a tailor, he told them not to use wool. But today was the one day he forgot I was allergic to it.

"If Cassie won't wear it, will you put it on me instead?" Elena said, sweet and coaxing.

The guests teased us. "Those two were closest of anyone as children, and now that the younger one's home, the older one's jealous. Cassie was spoiled from the start. Of course she should give way to a sister who's suffered."

Marcus put a pen in my hand. "Sign the agreement, apologize to Elena, and this is over for good."

The agreement was pushed in front of me again.

I shook my head, stubborn. "My grandmother left that to me." My father was out of patience. "Stop being willful, Cassie. Nobody has time for your scenes today. Sign it and nobody will stop you."

Elena made a show of pleading. "Mom, Dad, Cassie must be angry with me. Let her calm down by herself for a while."

The four of them shut me in the bedroom together. Marcus looked at me. "You come out when you admit what you did."

Lucian poured me a cup of hot water and put his hand on my forehead. "Keep faking all you want, you can't fool a thermometer. Stop lying to us."

"Take me to the hospital." There was almost no breath behind it.

"Sign and I'll take you." As he turned, I caught his sleeve with the last of my strength, but Elena called "Lucian" from outside the door, and he never looked back at me again. "Elena's upset. I'm going to her first. Think about what you've done. When your attitude is right, I'll come see you."

The door closed softly, and then it was locked from the outside. The pain in my head knocked me out. When I opened my eyes, the laughter outside was still going. I still had my emergency transmitter in the room. I had pressed one digit when the door was shoved open.

Elena crossed the room fast and tore the handset out of my grip. "Still trying to call someone? Cassie, do you have to humiliate me on my very first day back?"

"Give it back." I reached for it, but she shoved me down.

She stared at my bloodless face and threw the handset straight out the window. "I'm not giving you a chance to call for help."

The door was bolted again.

I don't know how long it was before the noise outside finally stopped. Lucian came in leading Elena by the hand, my parents and Marcus behind them.

"Cassie, have you thought it over?" Marcus patted my cheek. "Stop playing sick. Your last physical came back completely normal. We're not falling for it." By then I was cold all through and my mind was drifting apart.

Lucian sat on the edge of the bed. "Look how understanding Elena is. She's the one who asked me to come calm you down. Sign, give her the port land, and you and I go on just as we were."

My mother soothed me softly. "Your sister has nothing. Of course you should yield to her." My father agreed. "Don't think playing sick gets you out of it. It won't."

Elena leaned into Lucian's chest. "Does Cassie hate me? Fine, I don't want the port. If I'd known, I wouldn't have come back at all, and then I wouldn't have upset her."

"Nonsense." Lucian pulled her closer and looked at me with nothing but disappointment. "Are you only happy if you tear this Family apart?"

On the bed, I didn't answer at all. He reached out and shook me, his voice as gentle as ever. "Enough now."

But my body slid off the bed onto the floor.

Lucian went to lift me up, and his hand happened to touch my pulse. He froze where he stood.

Elena had the longest sentence, and by the time she came out she was the only one left. Everything she had been promised was gone. The organization had collapsed because of her, and everyone called her a witch. She was walking down the street with no destination when she caught sight of a dress in a shop window. It was the one she had worn on her wedding day.She mistook the salesgirl inside for me, charged in, and grabbed her by the hair. "Cassie, weren't you dead? Why are you still taking my things? You took Dad, Mom, my brother, and Lucian, and that still isn't enough? Now you want my gown too?"The salesgirl was knocked to the floor and people rushed to pull them apart. Elena was dragged off and sat on the floor, wailing. "Say something! Why won't you answer me!"But when she opened her eyes, everything around her terrified her. My face was gone and all that was left was wreckage. Her mind broke and they committed her to a psychiatric hospital. Sometimes she remembered the past and

Rosa took my body to be cremated and scattered the ashes into the sea. "Princess, you're free now."To atone, Lucian bought a stretch of that coast and set up a headstone for me.Weighed down by guilt, my parents sold off the family's assets and founded a charity in my name. After they were released, they came to my grave every All Souls' Day.My mother knitted a new toy and set it in front of my headstone. "When Mom isn't here, will you let this keep you company?""Cassie, all of it was Mom's fault. You've never come into my dreams. Is it because you still won't forgive me?" She opened her eyes, but there was no answer. My father stood far back from me and confessed, blaming himself. "I shouldn't have forced you. The port land was your grandmother's to give you."My father was old, and before long he fell ill. My mother begged Marcus for help, but no matter how many times she called, the line never went through.Only then did she understand how hopeless I had been. After my father die

When the maid finished, my mother wept aloud. "I only exchanged a few extra words with the vendor. I never thought Elena would wander off."She had buried the truth to escape the blame. The maid was dismissed for negligence, and even after my father learned the truth later, he never showed any intention of clearing my name."It's over and done with. Don't bring it up again.""We've come this far. Who takes the blame is a small thing."Elena knew perfectly well herself. She simply hated me, her sister, more than she hated our mother.I got to grow up inside the Family, while she had to live in someone else's house.Lucian drove his fist into the glass in front of him."So all of you knew the whole time that Cassie was innocent?"The only answer he got was silence. The letters between the two of them were dug up.Before the wedding, Elena had asked him, "What if Cassie gets upset?""Cassie is easy to soothe. I apologize and it's fine."Elena pressed further, "What if she loses her temper

Elena was found the day after she went missing, but every one of them kept it from me. Family men found her in a toy store. It was half a day before I heard about it at all.Once they saw they couldn't hide it any longer they admitted it and said they were bringing her home. My mother said the fright had taken her memory and she didn't recognize anyone. But the truth was that Elena hated me to the bone."She lost me. She doesn't deserve to be my sister. Does she know how frightened I was, crouching alone at the side of the road? Does she know how dangerous the night is?"The elders of the Family suggested that the children were still young and the two of us should meet and repair things. My parents chose instead to send her to distant relatives and to tell the world she still hadn't been found. "If Elena sees Cassie it will scar her. Better not to let them meet."Marcus flew out to see her every week. Lucian knew as well. Seven years ago, at an underworld gala, he came over and asked m

The police had the doctor take my body away, and the hospital held it for the time being. The medical records and test results Elena had torn up, along with the pharmacy receipts, were pieced back together sheet by sheet and laid out in front of them all.Lucian still refused to accept it. "Cassie isn't dead. She was tired, she's only sleeping..."In the interrogation room an officer pressed him. "The victim told you repeatedly and clearly that she was critically ill. Why did you refuse to let her get treatment?"Lucian's voice was full of self-blame. "I thought she was joking with me. Ever since she was little she liked using illness to avoid things. It never occurred to me it could be real this time. I only wanted her to break the habit.""She told you plainly that she wouldn't last the day.""I thought she was just sulking."In the next room, my parents and Marcus told an identical story."We watched her grow up. How could we hurt her? We locked the door because we were afraid she'd

My soul drifted slowly up into the air, and I watched the five of them below me without any feeling at all."Cassie?" His fingers trembled as he tried again. "Don't scare me."Marcus pushed him aside, clearly tense now. "Cassie always used to fake fainting to scare us. She's ticklish."He reached over and lightly tickled my stomach. But I didn't react at all.My mother panicked. "Cassie, Mom knows you're hurting. Mom won't push you to sign anymore. Wake up, all right?"Elena shrank back, sensing something was wrong too, but her voice stayed just as wounded. "Is she doing this to get back at me on purpose? There are so many people here today. Does she have to humiliate me?"Lucian wiped the cold sweat off his forehead and pointed at the clock on the wall. "Cassie must be playing a game with us. We wait three minutes. She won't be able to hold it and she'll wake up."But five full minutes passed and I didn't move. Finally my father took out his hearing aid with shaking hands and pressed
