Chapter 2

Author: Knit Knot
Julie had brought her dogs with her.

The two of them were sitting in the seats that were supposed to be where my daughter and I sat.

It made it seem as if Nora and I were the ones who didn't belong.

When Steven saw me, he immediately stood up and walked over. He opened his arms to hug me. "Kelly."

I took a step back. Steven looked embarrassed.

After glancing at Julie, he explained, "Julie said her dogs get anxious whenever I'm not around. They bark all night. And she's had enemies trying to assassinate her lately. She needs protection. After thinking it over, our house seemed like the safest place.

"You don't mind, do you?"

I looked at him in disappointment.

Julie walked over. Instead of apologizing, she looked pleased with herself. "Kelly, I hired Steven, so you wouldn't mind, would you?"

She then started giving orders to the servants. "Put my things in the master bedroom. I looked around the house, and that's the only room with decent lighting."

One of the servants picked up the dogs' belongings. "What about these?"

Julie glanced at me and pointed at Nora's room. "That one."

Right after she said that, one of her dogs trotted out with Nora's favorite stuffed toy in its mouth.

It was a birthday gift from Steven. Nora had treasured it for years. Now, it was torn to shreds.

I looked at Steven. He avoided my gaze.

"Kelly, if you're uncomfortable with this, I can ask Julie to stay somewhere else."

I smiled gently. "That's not necessary. She can stay."

Pulling out my calculator, I began pressing buttons with practiced ease. "The rate stays the same as before. I won't charge extra for that, but the venue rental fee will need to be billed separately. Overnight companionship services from Steven will cost a little more as well."

Steven's expression darkened as he stared at me. "Kelly! You've gone too far! Is money the only thing you care about now? Nora is standing right here, and you're talking about this so openly. Aren't you afraid she'll learn the wrong things?"

I simply smiled.

Was bringing Julie home and letting her dogs destroy our daughter's favorite toy love?

Steven was furious. He grabbed Julie's hand. "Let's go. We don't need to stay here and put up with this."

Before leaving, he stopped in front of me and threw a bundle of cash directly at my face.

"There's 100 thousand dollars here! That should be enough for you!"

The room fell silent. I crouched down and picked up the money.

Nora came over with a tissue and gently wiped my tears away.

Only then did I realize there was blood on the tissue. The edge of the bills had apparently cut me when Steven threw them.

"Mom, it's all my fault. I can't make money for you. That's why Dad gets to humiliate you like this."

I wiped away my tears and pulled her into my arms.

"It's okay. Just hang on a little longer. We'll be leaving this place soon."

When Nora was younger, she used to fall asleep in Steven's arms. Somewhere along the way, she had become used to sleeping in mine instead.

Looking down at her sleeping face, my heart clenched painfully.

How had our once-happy family ended up like this?

It all started when Julie came back.

She claimed enemies were trying to assassinate her, so Steven needed to stay by her side every day.

Eventually, he spent more nights at her house than his own.

To make Julie happy, he walked her dogs every day. He even celebrated their birthdays.

Meanwhile, our daughter was bullied at school because her father never showed up.

One day, a group of girls locked her inside an abandoned warehouse. She called Steven countless times, but he never answered.

By the time I made it there, she was unconscious and covered in injuries.

The doctor later told me that if she'd arrived at the hospital any later, her life could have been in danger.

Even then, when I called Steven, he only said it was Julie's dog's birthday. He told me to be understanding.

The memory made me take a deep breath. I returned to my room and began packing.

I left behind everything Steven had ever bought me except for a few changes of clothes.

To be honest, Steven had bought me many gifts over the years. The scarf in my hands had been a Mother's Day gift from both Steven and Nora.

Thinking about those happier days made my heart ache.

Steven used to be a devoted husband and father. He spent nearly all his free time with us.

But things changed, and people changed too.

He had changed.

After I finished packing, I woke Nora up.

Together, we left that house behind.

A month passed in our new home. I didn't hear a single word from Steven.

Julie, however, was impossible to avoid. I saw her on the news every day.

The cameras seemed to get closer and closer to her. Some reports even zoomed in on her standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Steven.

Apparently, they had been traveling. The destinations they visited were all places Steven had once promised to take Nora and me.

I never expected to see those sights in this way.

Somehow, Julie had also gotten hold of my phone number. She sent me messages every day.

[Kelly, Steven says people need to see him protecting me, or else I won't be safe. I told him not to stay so close to me, but he insisted you wouldn't mind.]

[Kelly, please don't be upset. I don't want the gifts Steven gave me. I can give them to you instead, okay?]

It was painfully obvious what she was doing.

She wanted to provoke me while pretending to comfort me.

The old me would have lost control and confronted Steven.

But now, I no longer cared. I didn't even bother replying. I simply acted as if I'd never seen the messages.

I thought life would continue like that.

To my surprise, one day, I suddenly received a message.

[A deposit of one million dollars has been credited to your account.]

The moment I checked the sender's information, I jolted upright.

When Nora turned eighteen, one of her paintings went viral and put her back under the spotlight. For the sake of her future career, Scott and I discussed it and decided to move back to the country. We bought her an apartment. While her popularity was at its peak, she began holding exhibitions more frequently. One day, while helping a fan look for a lost handbag, she was reviewing security footage when she suddenly pointed at a blurry figure on the screen."Mom, this guy comes earlier than anyone else and leaves later than everyone else. But he never asks for a photo or an autograph. What's he up to? Do you think he's trying to steal my paintings?"I stared at the figure, and my chest clenched instantly. It had been more than ten years since I'd seen him, yet I recognized him at a glance.Overhearing us, Scott walked over to look as well. He immediately seemed to realize something and was about to speak when I placed a hand on his and gently shook my head.I smiled at Nora. "Mayb

Scott had bought the house right next to ours.Nora squealed and ran inside. The moment she pushed open the door, she found every corner of the house filled with flowers. Layer upon layer of roses, lisianthus, and baby's breath made it look as though he had moved an entire floral boutique into the house.Scott walked up to me. His Adam's apple bobbed up and down slightly as he spoke in a firm yet gentle voice. "Kelly, will you be mine? I'll do everything in my power to make you and Nora happy."Tears filled my eyes without warning. They weren't tears of sadness, but the kind born from pure happiness. It was the kind that made my heart feel warm. Watching Nora dance around the house in excitement, I lifted a hand and wiped away my tears. I then nodded firmly.Six months later, we held a simple wedding in the church of our little town in Northeros. Nora served as the flower girl. She scattered petals behind my wedding dress the entire way down the aisle. She smiled more brightly than

Nora liked him a great deal too.Every day after school, the moment she walked through the front door and saw Scott, she would latch onto him and refuse to let go. She insisted that he build blocks or work on puzzles with her. She wouldn't even give him a break on weekends. She constantly begged me to take her to see him.Seeing how attached she was to him, I felt a little guilty and gave Scott an apologetic smile. "Is Nora keeping you from running your business?"Scott waved it off with a grin. "Not at all. I'd love for her to come by more often. Having a little girl around actually makes the floral boutique livelier. Otherwise, I'd be stuck there by myself every day and get bored out of my mind."Nora never caused any trouble. Not only did she help wrap bouquets and tie neat bows around each arrangement, but she would also enthusiastically greet customers and explain the meanings of different flowers as if she were a professional florist.Eventually, Scott gave her a key to the

After the neighbors warned him off, Steven never showed up outside my house again. To thank the couple, I prepared a huge feast and invited them over. When they left, I packed bags full of vegetables from my garden and practically forced them into their hands before letting them go.Just before stepping out of the yard, the woman hesitated and turned back. "Kelly, from my experience with men like him, he won't give up that easily. If he can't get through to you, I'm worried he'll go straight to Nora instead. Keep your guard up for a while."My heart skipped a beat. After tossing and turning all night, I requested an extended leave of absence from work the next day and decided to personally take Nora to and from school every day. I wasn't going to let her out of my sight. One evening, while I was drying her hair, she suddenly tilted her head back and asked, "Mom, why does Sunny's owner keep hanging around near my school? Does he not want Sunny anymore?"Alarmed by what she said, I

I turned around in shock, only to realize that Nora had come outside at some point. She clutched tightly at the hem of my shirt while looking up with innocent eyes. The moment Steven heard what came out of her mouth, all the color drained from his face."Nora, what are you saying?"It's me, Dad. Are you still angry at me? Is that why you said those things on purpose?"Nora, I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me this one time?"My daughter timidly stepped back and hid behind me."Mister, I don't have a dad."Recalling the doctor's repeated warnings when Nora was discharged from the hospital, I was terrified that Steven's appearance might overwhelm her. I immediately covered both of her ears and shielded her completely behind me. I refused to let her look at him for even a second."Did you hear that? Leave, right now. And stay away from my daughter!"Steven's eyes welled up with tears. His lips moved as if he wanted to say something, but before I could finish dialing for help,

'How did Steven find this place? Why is he here?' I thought.Holding Nora close, I stared at him warily. When I noticed his eyes fixed on my daughter, I immediately took her back inside."I need to handle something. Stay inside and play for a little while. I'll take you to school after I'm done."After repeating the instructions several times, I finally stepped outside to face him.Seeing Steven again, I almost didn't recognize him in his downtrodden state. The stubble and under-eye circles made him look very frail. He seemed overwhelmed when he saw me. "Kelly, Nora isn't dead, is she?"He grabbed my arm and kept trying to look past me."Please let me see Nora. I just want to see that she's okay."I stepped in front of him and blocked his view. "We have nothing to do with you. We're divorced. At this point, you're harassing us. If you don't leave, I'll call the police.""No. Please, Kelly. I was wrong."He sounded desperate and was nearly begging. "I miss you both. I've bee
