Chapter 6

Author: Knit Knot
"Miss, this isn't about money." The doctor pried my fingers loose one by one. There was no sympathy in his eyes. There was only fear. "Ms. Ziegler made it very clear. Anyone who stays in that operating room today will lose their jobs tomorrow."

No matter how hard I begged, the doctors left one after another. The operating room doors slowly closed.

Nora lay alone on the operating table. She could have made it through in another thirty minutes. Instead, she lay there with her chest wide open and waiting to die.

My phone vibrated. A message from Julie popped up. She was reclining against the master bed with a damp towel against her forehead. Her complexion looked healthy and rosy. There was fresh lipstick on her lips. Seven or eight doctors surrounded her. There were even two carts full of medical equipment nearby.

Steven sat by the bed and personally fed her soup.

I could sense her gloating through the message.

[Kelly, weren't you the one who wanted money instead of people? How does it feel to watch your daughter die right in front of you?]

Time moved ever so slowly. If this continued, the anesthesia would wear off. Nora would wake up and die in agony. I called Steven over and over. Every attempt ended with the same cold automated voice. He never bothered to answer.

The heart monitor's rhythm grew weaker and weaker. I turned on the video recording function on my phone. I then dropped to my knees and started begging.

"Julie, you can have Steven to yourself. Please let the doctors come back, will you?"

I kept begging.

"I'll return to you all the money he transferred to me!"

I didn't stop there.

"Once Nora's surgery is over, I swear I'll disappear for good. I'll never bother either of you again for the rest of my life!"

Less than ten seconds after I sent the video, Steven called back.

"Kelly! Julie was just feeling a little dizzy. What's wrong with having doctors check on her? What kind of pathetic stunt are you pulling now?" He yelled angrily until his voice turned hoarse.

"Are you willing to risk Nora's life just to frame Julie? Have you completely lost your mind?"

Julie's weak voice came through. "Steven, it's my fault. My body just had to act up while Nora was in surgery."

Steven snorted. "Kelly, is this little performance supposed to remind me I haven't paid you yet? I swear, money is all you think about."

The line went dead. Immediately afterward, a deposit notification appeared. Countless news alerts began popping up on my phone.

[Donna Graham is obsessed with money. She rented out her husband and home. She even put her daughter's life on the line. She's absolutely heartless. How could she stop her daughter's open-heart surgery just to frame someone else and extort money?]

After reading that, I began receiving countless phone calls and text messages. It was all to harass and curse at me.

I hung up one call after another with trembling hands while desperately contacting other hospitals, but no one wanted to offend Julie.

More and more reporters gathered outside. The camera flashes never stopped. Someone even tried forcing open emergency exits to break into the operating room and film.

I threw myself in front of the doors and shoved them away like a madwoman. "Get away from here! All of you, get out!"

Meanwhile, Steven felt increasingly restless. He repeatedly unlocked his phone, stared at the lit screen, and locked it again. He tapped on the armrest.

"Nora is still in surgery. Maybe I've taken this too far."

He glanced at Julie. She was sitting comfortably in bed and drinking soup while eight doctors hovered around her.

He was about to stand up when Julie wrapped her hand around his arm. "Steven, if you go now, won't that just let Kelly know that throwing tantrums works? Once she gets what she wants this way, she'll do it again every time she wants something. Eventually, the entire family will know you married a shrew."

Her voice softened. She pressed a hand against her forehead and coughed softly. "Besides, there are plenty of people at the hospital. Nora will be fine. Steven, I'm still feeling a little dizzy. Stay with me a little longer, won't you?"

Steven slowly sat back down. He tossed his phone onto the nightstand. "She's getting more and more unreasonable. Maybe it's time she learned a lesson."

What he didn't know was that a few hours later, the hospital security footage would drive him completely insane.

When Nora turned eighteen, one of her paintings went viral and put her back under the spotlight. For the sake of her future career, Scott and I discussed it and decided to move back to the country. We bought her an apartment. While her popularity was at its peak, she began holding exhibitions more frequently. One day, while helping a fan look for a lost handbag, she was reviewing security footage when she suddenly pointed at a blurry figure on the screen."Mom, this guy comes earlier than anyone else and leaves later than everyone else. But he never asks for a photo or an autograph. What's he up to? Do you think he's trying to steal my paintings?"I stared at the figure, and my chest clenched instantly. It had been more than ten years since I'd seen him, yet I recognized him at a glance.Overhearing us, Scott walked over to look as well. He immediately seemed to realize something and was about to speak when I placed a hand on his and gently shook my head.I smiled at Nora. "Mayb

Scott had bought the house right next to ours.Nora squealed and ran inside. The moment she pushed open the door, she found every corner of the house filled with flowers. Layer upon layer of roses, lisianthus, and baby's breath made it look as though he had moved an entire floral boutique into the house.Scott walked up to me. His Adam's apple bobbed up and down slightly as he spoke in a firm yet gentle voice. "Kelly, will you be mine? I'll do everything in my power to make you and Nora happy."Tears filled my eyes without warning. They weren't tears of sadness, but the kind born from pure happiness. It was the kind that made my heart feel warm. Watching Nora dance around the house in excitement, I lifted a hand and wiped away my tears. I then nodded firmly.Six months later, we held a simple wedding in the church of our little town in Northeros. Nora served as the flower girl. She scattered petals behind my wedding dress the entire way down the aisle. She smiled more brightly than

Nora liked him a great deal too.Every day after school, the moment she walked through the front door and saw Scott, she would latch onto him and refuse to let go. She insisted that he build blocks or work on puzzles with her. She wouldn't even give him a break on weekends. She constantly begged me to take her to see him.Seeing how attached she was to him, I felt a little guilty and gave Scott an apologetic smile. "Is Nora keeping you from running your business?"Scott waved it off with a grin. "Not at all. I'd love for her to come by more often. Having a little girl around actually makes the floral boutique livelier. Otherwise, I'd be stuck there by myself every day and get bored out of my mind."Nora never caused any trouble. Not only did she help wrap bouquets and tie neat bows around each arrangement, but she would also enthusiastically greet customers and explain the meanings of different flowers as if she were a professional florist.Eventually, Scott gave her a key to the

After the neighbors warned him off, Steven never showed up outside my house again. To thank the couple, I prepared a huge feast and invited them over. When they left, I packed bags full of vegetables from my garden and practically forced them into their hands before letting them go.Just before stepping out of the yard, the woman hesitated and turned back. "Kelly, from my experience with men like him, he won't give up that easily. If he can't get through to you, I'm worried he'll go straight to Nora instead. Keep your guard up for a while."My heart skipped a beat. After tossing and turning all night, I requested an extended leave of absence from work the next day and decided to personally take Nora to and from school every day. I wasn't going to let her out of my sight. One evening, while I was drying her hair, she suddenly tilted her head back and asked, "Mom, why does Sunny's owner keep hanging around near my school? Does he not want Sunny anymore?"Alarmed by what she said, I

I turned around in shock, only to realize that Nora had come outside at some point. She clutched tightly at the hem of my shirt while looking up with innocent eyes. The moment Steven heard what came out of her mouth, all the color drained from his face."Nora, what are you saying?"It's me, Dad. Are you still angry at me? Is that why you said those things on purpose?"Nora, I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me this one time?"My daughter timidly stepped back and hid behind me."Mister, I don't have a dad."Recalling the doctor's repeated warnings when Nora was discharged from the hospital, I was terrified that Steven's appearance might overwhelm her. I immediately covered both of her ears and shielded her completely behind me. I refused to let her look at him for even a second."Did you hear that? Leave, right now. And stay away from my daughter!"Steven's eyes welled up with tears. His lips moved as if he wanted to say something, but before I could finish dialing for help,

'How did Steven find this place? Why is he here?' I thought.Holding Nora close, I stared at him warily. When I noticed his eyes fixed on my daughter, I immediately took her back inside."I need to handle something. Stay inside and play for a little while. I'll take you to school after I'm done."After repeating the instructions several times, I finally stepped outside to face him.Seeing Steven again, I almost didn't recognize him in his downtrodden state. The stubble and under-eye circles made him look very frail. He seemed overwhelmed when he saw me. "Kelly, Nora isn't dead, is she?"He grabbed my arm and kept trying to look past me."Please let me see Nora. I just want to see that she's okay."I stepped in front of him and blocked his view. "We have nothing to do with you. We're divorced. At this point, you're harassing us. If you don't leave, I'll call the police.""No. Please, Kelly. I was wrong."He sounded desperate and was nearly begging. "I miss you both. I've bee
