Chapter 3

Author: Knit Knot
By the time I reached my dad's house, Steven was already directing workers to tear down the walls.

"Stop!"

I ran over and stood in front of the wall.

When Steven saw me, he instinctively pulled Julie behind him.

"Kelly, I thought you said all you cared about was money. I've already paid you this much. Isn't that enough?

"Julie likes this piece of land. The money has been transferred. What more do you want?"

I glared at him. My entire body was shaking.

"Steven, you jerk!"

Steven looked at me without a trace of emotion. "Kelly, this is what you taught me.

"You're the one who told me everything, including feelings, has a price."

Julie peeked out from behind him. There was a wooden urn in her arms. Her eyes welled with tears when she spoke. "Forget it, Steven. King was like a son to me, but at the end of the day, he was only a dog. Using Kelly's dad's property for his burial wouldn't look very good if people found out."

After she said that, she dabbed at the corners of her eyes with a handkerchief. The pit bull by her feet had a studded collar. It sniffed noisily on the ground.

Steven lowered his gaze to the urn in Julie's arms. His voice became even colder. "Move aside, Kelly."

I clenched my jaw hard. "In your dreams."

He slowly walked to my side and leaned forward. His lips nearly brushed my ear. His tone was gentle, almost affectionate even. "Nora turns five next month. The Callister family is still investigating who killed their son. If we hand someone over, how long do you think a little girl could last? Kelly, I can take the blame myself, but only if you cooperate."

I felt my entire body go numb. His words sent a chill down my spine.

Three years ago, during a feud between our families, the Callister family's son had come to seize the docks. Steven was the one who pulled the trigger. Fewer than three people knew the truth. Every word he spoke now felt like a knife jabbing into my chest.

He wanted to use Nora as a bargaining chip. He was willing to sacrifice his own daughter.

"Nora is your daughter too!"

Steven straightened up and smiled. He brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. His fingertips grazed my forehead with a tenderness that completely contradicted his words. "That's exactly why I'm discussing it with you first. Kelly, it's a piece of land in exchange for your daughter's life. Aren't you the one who's always so good with your calculations?"

It felt like someone had poured a bucket of cold water all over me. My limbs shook uncontrollably while images of Nora flashed through my mind. I could picture her running in the yard with her pigtails bouncing. She'd turn around and call out to me in the most enduring way.

The crowbar slipped from my fingers. It hit the ground with a loud clang.

My legs felt heavy. Slowly and mechanically, I stepped aside.

Julie nudged the pit bull with her foot. "Sunny. Go pick a nice spot for King."

The dog immediately sprang into action. It charged through the hole in the wall and disappeared into the old house. Before I could even react, I heard something from inside.

My dad's urn had been knocked to the ground. The lid rolled across the floor.

Gray-white ashes scattered everywhere.

"No!"

I ran inside like a madwoman. My foot caught on broken bricks, and I fell hard. My forehead slammed into a jagged section of wall. A burst of red filled my vision.

The dog saw the ashes and became even more excited. It leaped forward before pawing and stomping wildly on the ashes.

Julie frantically ran after it and grabbed its collar before pulling it back. "Sunny! Stop that! That's Kelly's dad's ashes. What if you get your paws dirty?"

The harder she pulled, the more the cup of hot coffee in her hand tilted. The entire cup of coffee eventually spilled onto the floor. The liquid mixed with the ashes and turned into a muddy gray-brown sludge.

"Oh no!" Julie took two dramatic steps backward. Her eyes glistened with undisguised satisfaction. "Kelly, I swear I didn't mean to disrespect your father. What are we going to do now?"

As she backed away, she conveniently fell into Steven's arms.

"Kelly!" When Steven saw the blood covering my face, his expression finally changed. He hurried toward me to help me up. "Where did you get hit? Are you dizzy?"

I pushed his hand away. I picked up a broken brick from the ground before charging at Julie and her dog.

"I'll kill you both!"

Before my fingers could even touch Julie's sleeve, a brutal kick slammed into my stomach. I was sent flying. My back crashed into a broken doorframe. The impact felt like it crushed every organ in my body.

Steven lowered his leg. His expression was dark with fury as he positioned himself protectively in front of Julie. The way he looked at me was the way one might look at a lunatic.

"Kelly, I think you've completely lost your mind. How dare you lay a hand on Julie? Do I need to have you thrown into the family's interrogation room so you can cool off for a few days?"

When Nora turned eighteen, one of her paintings went viral and put her back under the spotlight. For the sake of her future career, Scott and I discussed it and decided to move back to the country. We bought her an apartment. While her popularity was at its peak, she began holding exhibitions more frequently. One day, while helping a fan look for a lost handbag, she was reviewing security footage when she suddenly pointed at a blurry figure on the screen."Mom, this guy comes earlier than anyone else and leaves later than everyone else. But he never asks for a photo or an autograph. What's he up to? Do you think he's trying to steal my paintings?"I stared at the figure, and my chest clenched instantly. It had been more than ten years since I'd seen him, yet I recognized him at a glance.Overhearing us, Scott walked over to look as well. He immediately seemed to realize something and was about to speak when I placed a hand on his and gently shook my head.I smiled at Nora. "Mayb

Scott had bought the house right next to ours.Nora squealed and ran inside. The moment she pushed open the door, she found every corner of the house filled with flowers. Layer upon layer of roses, lisianthus, and baby's breath made it look as though he had moved an entire floral boutique into the house.Scott walked up to me. His Adam's apple bobbed up and down slightly as he spoke in a firm yet gentle voice. "Kelly, will you be mine? I'll do everything in my power to make you and Nora happy."Tears filled my eyes without warning. They weren't tears of sadness, but the kind born from pure happiness. It was the kind that made my heart feel warm. Watching Nora dance around the house in excitement, I lifted a hand and wiped away my tears. I then nodded firmly.Six months later, we held a simple wedding in the church of our little town in Northeros. Nora served as the flower girl. She scattered petals behind my wedding dress the entire way down the aisle. She smiled more brightly than

Nora liked him a great deal too.Every day after school, the moment she walked through the front door and saw Scott, she would latch onto him and refuse to let go. She insisted that he build blocks or work on puzzles with her. She wouldn't even give him a break on weekends. She constantly begged me to take her to see him.Seeing how attached she was to him, I felt a little guilty and gave Scott an apologetic smile. "Is Nora keeping you from running your business?"Scott waved it off with a grin. "Not at all. I'd love for her to come by more often. Having a little girl around actually makes the floral boutique livelier. Otherwise, I'd be stuck there by myself every day and get bored out of my mind."Nora never caused any trouble. Not only did she help wrap bouquets and tie neat bows around each arrangement, but she would also enthusiastically greet customers and explain the meanings of different flowers as if she were a professional florist.Eventually, Scott gave her a key to the

After the neighbors warned him off, Steven never showed up outside my house again. To thank the couple, I prepared a huge feast and invited them over. When they left, I packed bags full of vegetables from my garden and practically forced them into their hands before letting them go.Just before stepping out of the yard, the woman hesitated and turned back. "Kelly, from my experience with men like him, he won't give up that easily. If he can't get through to you, I'm worried he'll go straight to Nora instead. Keep your guard up for a while."My heart skipped a beat. After tossing and turning all night, I requested an extended leave of absence from work the next day and decided to personally take Nora to and from school every day. I wasn't going to let her out of my sight. One evening, while I was drying her hair, she suddenly tilted her head back and asked, "Mom, why does Sunny's owner keep hanging around near my school? Does he not want Sunny anymore?"Alarmed by what she said, I

I turned around in shock, only to realize that Nora had come outside at some point. She clutched tightly at the hem of my shirt while looking up with innocent eyes. The moment Steven heard what came out of her mouth, all the color drained from his face."Nora, what are you saying?"It's me, Dad. Are you still angry at me? Is that why you said those things on purpose?"Nora, I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me this one time?"My daughter timidly stepped back and hid behind me."Mister, I don't have a dad."Recalling the doctor's repeated warnings when Nora was discharged from the hospital, I was terrified that Steven's appearance might overwhelm her. I immediately covered both of her ears and shielded her completely behind me. I refused to let her look at him for even a second."Did you hear that? Leave, right now. And stay away from my daughter!"Steven's eyes welled up with tears. His lips moved as if he wanted to say something, but before I could finish dialing for help,

'How did Steven find this place? Why is he here?' I thought.Holding Nora close, I stared at him warily. When I noticed his eyes fixed on my daughter, I immediately took her back inside."I need to handle something. Stay inside and play for a little while. I'll take you to school after I'm done."After repeating the instructions several times, I finally stepped outside to face him.Seeing Steven again, I almost didn't recognize him in his downtrodden state. The stubble and under-eye circles made him look very frail. He seemed overwhelmed when he saw me. "Kelly, Nora isn't dead, is she?"He grabbed my arm and kept trying to look past me."Please let me see Nora. I just want to see that she's okay."I stepped in front of him and blocked his view. "We have nothing to do with you. We're divorced. At this point, you're harassing us. If you don't leave, I'll call the police.""No. Please, Kelly. I was wrong."He sounded desperate and was nearly begging. "I miss you both. I've bee
