Chapter 5

Author: Knit Knot
Steven lowered his gaze to the property transfer agreement. His expression gradually turned cold.

"Kelly, you're unbelievable."

He gripped the pen so tightly the tip nearly pierced through the paper.

"Ungrateful too."

After pulling off the cap, he signed his name at the bottom of the document. He then tossed the pen aside and walked away without another word.

I stood there staring at it. The metal pen had snapped into two pieces when it hit the ground. Ink leaked from the break.

That pen was a gift from me. Back then, I was still a student with barely any money. I worked part-time jobs just to save enough to buy it for him.

Steven used to treasure it.

What about now?

No, he had changed long ago.

I bent down and picked up the document. Behind the property transfer agreement was another contract. Flipping to the last page, I found his signature already there.

It was a divorce agreement.

I stared at the signature. I then laughed and cried at the same time.

"Mom!"

The voice made me jerk my head up.

Nora jumped out of a taxi. Her pigtails had come loose as she ran toward me. I dropped to my knees and caught her in my arms.

"Nora! Who let you take a taxi by yourself? Why did you come here alone?"

She buried her face against my chest. Her voice was muffled and trembling. "Mom, I missed you so much. Dad took me to stay with him while you were gone. He said I could see you again after five days. I missed you."

My heart clenched when I saw her like this. Every moment I'd spent missing her in that dark room came crashing back all at once.

Holding her face in my hands, I carefully examined her eyes. "Did anyone bully you while you were staying with Dad?"

Nora shook her head, but she avoided my gaze and looked elsewhere.

My heart sank. Instinctively, I reached for her sleeve. She grabbed it tightly and shrank back.

"It's okay, Mom. It was just Julie's dog."

My heart skipped a beat. I rolled up her sleeve.

There were dozens of bike marks that went all the way up to her elbow. Some had already scabbed over, while others were still bleeding.

My heart clenched so tight I could hardly breathe.

Nora wiped away my tears with her tiny hand. Her fingers were cold. "Mom, it doesn't hurt. Please don't cry."

I touched my face and realized tears were streaming down my face. I hadn't even noticed it earlier.

"Did Dad know you were bitten by that dog?"

Nora pouted. Her voice was barely audible. "He knew. He wanted to stop it at first, but Julie said we were playing a game. She said I lost, and if I didn't accept the punishment, I'd grow up a loser."

I pulled her into my arms before she could see me breaking down.

"Don't be afraid, Nora."

I pressed my lips against the top of her head. "I won't ever leave you again. I promise I'll never let this happen again."

Right after I said that, Nora fainted on the spot.

I rushed her to the hospital.

After examining her, the doctor came out and said, "Didn't you know your daughter has a nut allergy? Why would you let her eat that much?"

My heart clenched. I looked at Nora, who was still lying in bed. Her face was bright red. Hives spread across her neck in large patches. Her breathing was shallow and rapid. Her lips had turned pale too. Her body was all curled up.

I called Steven, but he didn't answer. After a long time, one of his men finally picked up.

"Doesn't Steven know Nora is allergic to nuts? Where is he?" I fumed.

The man sounded startled. "Don Graham is accompanying Ms. Ziegler on a walk."

The gurney was wheeled straight into the operating room. I stood outside in the hallway. Through the small window in the door, I watched doctors insert tubes into my daughter's body. I watched them administer epinephrine. The cardiac monitor alarm went off again and again.

I prayed on my knees outside the operating room.

I prayed to the heavens that Nora's surgery would go smoothly.

Before the surgery was even finished, a deposit notification appeared on my phone.

I didn't have time to open it. The operating room doors suddenly burst open.

One of the doctors, who still had on bloodstained gloves, hurried out.

My limbs felt numb. I grabbed the last doctor by his white coat.

"My daughter's surgery isn't finished. Where are you going?"

The doctor answered, "Ms. Ziegler isn't feeling well. She requested that we examine her immediately."

"No!" I cried out desperately while pulling out my debit card.

"How much is she paying you? I'll pay double! Save my daughter first!"

Worried they would think it was too little, I grabbed my phone to transfer the money immediately.

That was when I finally saw the remark on the deposit notification clearly.

When Nora turned eighteen, one of her paintings went viral and put her back under the spotlight. For the sake of her future career, Scott and I discussed it and decided to move back to the country. We bought her an apartment. While her popularity was at its peak, she began holding exhibitions more frequently. One day, while helping a fan look for a lost handbag, she was reviewing security footage when she suddenly pointed at a blurry figure on the screen."Mom, this guy comes earlier than anyone else and leaves later than everyone else. But he never asks for a photo or an autograph. What's he up to? Do you think he's trying to steal my paintings?"I stared at the figure, and my chest clenched instantly. It had been more than ten years since I'd seen him, yet I recognized him at a glance.Overhearing us, Scott walked over to look as well. He immediately seemed to realize something and was about to speak when I placed a hand on his and gently shook my head.I smiled at Nora. "Mayb

Scott had bought the house right next to ours.Nora squealed and ran inside. The moment she pushed open the door, she found every corner of the house filled with flowers. Layer upon layer of roses, lisianthus, and baby's breath made it look as though he had moved an entire floral boutique into the house.Scott walked up to me. His Adam's apple bobbed up and down slightly as he spoke in a firm yet gentle voice. "Kelly, will you be mine? I'll do everything in my power to make you and Nora happy."Tears filled my eyes without warning. They weren't tears of sadness, but the kind born from pure happiness. It was the kind that made my heart feel warm. Watching Nora dance around the house in excitement, I lifted a hand and wiped away my tears. I then nodded firmly.Six months later, we held a simple wedding in the church of our little town in Northeros. Nora served as the flower girl. She scattered petals behind my wedding dress the entire way down the aisle. She smiled more brightly than

Nora liked him a great deal too.Every day after school, the moment she walked through the front door and saw Scott, she would latch onto him and refuse to let go. She insisted that he build blocks or work on puzzles with her. She wouldn't even give him a break on weekends. She constantly begged me to take her to see him.Seeing how attached she was to him, I felt a little guilty and gave Scott an apologetic smile. "Is Nora keeping you from running your business?"Scott waved it off with a grin. "Not at all. I'd love for her to come by more often. Having a little girl around actually makes the floral boutique livelier. Otherwise, I'd be stuck there by myself every day and get bored out of my mind."Nora never caused any trouble. Not only did she help wrap bouquets and tie neat bows around each arrangement, but she would also enthusiastically greet customers and explain the meanings of different flowers as if she were a professional florist.Eventually, Scott gave her a key to the

After the neighbors warned him off, Steven never showed up outside my house again. To thank the couple, I prepared a huge feast and invited them over. When they left, I packed bags full of vegetables from my garden and practically forced them into their hands before letting them go.Just before stepping out of the yard, the woman hesitated and turned back. "Kelly, from my experience with men like him, he won't give up that easily. If he can't get through to you, I'm worried he'll go straight to Nora instead. Keep your guard up for a while."My heart skipped a beat. After tossing and turning all night, I requested an extended leave of absence from work the next day and decided to personally take Nora to and from school every day. I wasn't going to let her out of my sight. One evening, while I was drying her hair, she suddenly tilted her head back and asked, "Mom, why does Sunny's owner keep hanging around near my school? Does he not want Sunny anymore?"Alarmed by what she said, I

I turned around in shock, only to realize that Nora had come outside at some point. She clutched tightly at the hem of my shirt while looking up with innocent eyes. The moment Steven heard what came out of her mouth, all the color drained from his face."Nora, what are you saying?"It's me, Dad. Are you still angry at me? Is that why you said those things on purpose?"Nora, I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me this one time?"My daughter timidly stepped back and hid behind me."Mister, I don't have a dad."Recalling the doctor's repeated warnings when Nora was discharged from the hospital, I was terrified that Steven's appearance might overwhelm her. I immediately covered both of her ears and shielded her completely behind me. I refused to let her look at him for even a second."Did you hear that? Leave, right now. And stay away from my daughter!"Steven's eyes welled up with tears. His lips moved as if he wanted to say something, but before I could finish dialing for help,

'How did Steven find this place? Why is he here?' I thought.Holding Nora close, I stared at him warily. When I noticed his eyes fixed on my daughter, I immediately took her back inside."I need to handle something. Stay inside and play for a little while. I'll take you to school after I'm done."After repeating the instructions several times, I finally stepped outside to face him.Seeing Steven again, I almost didn't recognize him in his downtrodden state. The stubble and under-eye circles made him look very frail. He seemed overwhelmed when he saw me. "Kelly, Nora isn't dead, is she?"He grabbed my arm and kept trying to look past me."Please let me see Nora. I just want to see that she's okay."I stepped in front of him and blocked his view. "We have nothing to do with you. We're divorced. At this point, you're harassing us. If you don't leave, I'll call the police.""No. Please, Kelly. I was wrong."He sounded desperate and was nearly begging. "I miss you both. I've bee
