Chapter 3

Autor: H3PO4
Adrian had barely set foot on the terrace when my father slammed his hand down on the table.

"This is getting ridiculous. Are we supposed to beg her to get up now?"

Adrian stopped in his tracks, and my father went on.

"There's a thunderstorm coming. As scared of thunder as she is, she'll come back in on her own.

"That's enough, Maria. You can go. Ivy's my own daughter too. I'm not going to let anything actually happen to her."

Maria gave me a long, searching look, then had no choice but to leave.

Adrian sat back down on the sofa.

Before long, dark clouds gathered overhead.

Outside, the wind howled, and fat raindrops pelted my body.

Boom!

Thunder exploded, and a flash of lightning lit up my pale, lifeless face.

Still, I didn't move. I let the storm beat down on me, my body frozen in that same twisted position.

Seeing this, Nadia spoke up, as if out of kindness.

"Ivy's always been so competitive. If she gets up now, it's like admitting she was faking. She's too proud to back down.

"Why don't we leave her alone and give her some privacy? Once she's thought it over, she'll get up on her own."

At that, my father's anger only grew. He hurled his wineglass to the floor.

"This is outrageous!

"So she wants to go head to head with me? Fine. I'll wait right here and see how long she can lie on that floor!"

Whatever worry Adrian had felt vanished too. He frowned and glanced in my direction, as if blaming me for acting out.

"Mamma, Ivy's acting is so realistic."

Nadia snuggled up against my mother, whispering to her.

My mother gave her a doting smile.

"All right, forget about her.

"All her drama kept you from eating properly, didn't it? Tell me what you'd like, and I'll have the kitchen make it."

"You're the best, Mamma. Love you."

Nadia nestled into my mother's arms, all sweetness.

Suddenly, my phone started ringing on the dining table.

It was the jewelry store.

Adrian and I were getting married in two weeks. Today was the day I'd arranged with the store to pick up our custom wedding rings.

Adrian went over and answered, and the store manager's warm voice came through.

"Ma'am, your custom wedding rings are ready. When would you like to pick them up?"

Adrian glanced at me and rubbed his brow irritably.

"Return them. The wedding's off."

The manager paused for a moment, then hurried to explain.

"Sir, I'm so sorry to hear that, but custom rings can't be returned."

Nadia suddenly leaned in, looking at Adrian hopefully.

"Adrian, if they can't be returned, just let it go. Let's not make things hard for the manager.

"I heard those rings cost a million dollars. I've never even seen rings that expensive. If Ivy doesn't want them, why not just give them to me?"

I stared at Nadia in disbelief.

To create those rings, I'd ignored my heart condition and traveled to eighteen countries just to handpick the perfect gemstones myself.

Every detail of those rings was something I'd designed with my own hands, pouring a whole year of my heart into them.

She knew how much I'd been longing for the moment I'd finally put that ring on.

How could she steal my rings?

I looked at Adrian.

Say no, Adrian! You know how much those rings mean to me.

But he just smiled and ruffled Nadia's hair.

"Sure. You're always so thoughtful, Nadia.

"Consider the rings compensation for how she upset you."

My mother nodded in satisfaction.

"Come on, let's all go. We'll pick out a few more pieces of jewelry you like, too."

They put on their coats, getting ready to leave.

Not a single one of them looked back at me.

They left me lying in the freezing storm, my body stiff, the dark purple patches growing more and more visible.

This was the family I'd cherished. The man I'd loved.

To them, my life wasn't even worth as much as a few words from Nadia.

My soul cried out in silent anguish.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. It was my father's underboss, Victor Bianchi.

He leaned down to report to my father.

"Boss, about that shipment up north—"

He stopped mid-sentence. His face went white, and his pupils shrank. He pointed toward the terrace, his hand trembling.

"I-Ivy... How is she dead?!"

Nadia's phone dropped to the floor. Her smug smile froze."Papa, Mamma, it's not what you heard."Her face went white, and she instinctively backed away.Adrian charged at her like a madman and grabbed her by the throat, squeezing hard."So your parents never died. All these years, you've been framing Ivy!"Nadia's face turned red. She couldn't breathe and struggled desperately.Just as she was about to pass out, Adrian flung her to the floor. Before she could even catch her breath, a slap landed across her face.It was my mother."You bitch! You killed Ivy! Give me back my daughter!"My mother, who had always been so elegant, straddled Nadia and slapped her face again and again.Nadia's lip split and bled, but she suddenly burst into manic laughter. She stared up at my mother."I killed Ivy?"You were the ones who said she was faking! You were the ones who let me prank her! You were the ones who wouldn't let anyone save her!"You drove your own daughter to her death with

"No! You can't punish me!"Nadia knew all too well how brutal the Family's punishments could be. She screamed and hid behind my mother, clutching at her clothes and sobbing so hard she could barely breathe."Mamma, help me! I really only wanted to play a joke on Ivy. I never meant to kill her. I didn't do it on purpose."But this time, my mother didn't do what she always had, giving Nadia anything she wanted the moment she saw her cry.My mother stood there in a daze. She still couldn't believe her own daughter was really dead, or that she herself had unknowingly helped kill me."Nadia, why didn't you tell us that your prank was swapping out Ivy's medicine?"My mother suddenly asked.Nadia froze for a moment, then stammered out an excuse."I... I didn't mean to. You all said... Ivy was always faking being sick..."She seemed to have found a good enough reason, and her voice grew confident."I only wanted to prank her because I listened to you. Yes, that's it. This isn't my fa

The cause of my death still wasn't clear, and the Family never cooperated with the police, so Henry stepped in as the medical examiner. He put on gloves and began examining me."Cyanosis of the lips and nail beds. Livor mortis in the lower parts of the back. A pained expression on the face. Combined with her medical history, this was death from an acute heart attack."He looked around and quickly zeroed in on the pill bottle on the floor and the emergency heart pills scattered all around it."The medicine fell right beside where Ivy was sitting. She should have been able to take it."Henry picked up the bottle and examined it. There was nothing wrong with it. It was ordinary pharmacy packaging. He picked up one of the pills, crushed it, and held it to his nose. A mix of rot and fishiness hit him so hard that he started coughing. He realized right away that it was a nasty-flavored jelly bean.Henry crushed every single pill. Without exception, they were all jelly beans. There wa

"Call the doctor! Hurry!"His eyes bloodshot, Adrian roared at my sister and my mother. He gently kissed my ice-cold forehead and murmured to himself."Ivy, don't be scared. I'm going to save you. You're going to be okay."Adrian carefully laid me down and, with trembling hands, unzipped the side of my dress. The moment the fabric fell away, he saw the large dark purple patches of livor mortis all over my body.Adrian had handled countless bodies in his life. He knew all too well what this degree of stiffness and lividity meant. I'd been dead for a long time. There was no chance of bringing me back. The pain nearly drowned him.But he still refused to accept the cruel truth. Like a madman, he grabbed the defibrillator, pressed it to my chest, and started trying to revive me.It was a defibrillator I'd bought a while back, just in case.Back then, I'd half-jokingly told Adrian that if I ever had a bad attack, he had to use it to save me.But he'd barely glanced at it and mock

For a moment, the air in the living room froze. My father was looking over the documents Victor had handed him. Without even looking up, he waved a hand."Don't make a fuss, Victor. Ivy's just throwing a tantrum."She's lying out there playing dead and won't get up no matter what. There's nothing we can do.""No, Ivy's definitely not playing dead!" Victor shouted, already heading for the terrace."Victor!"My father called him back."Leave her. She needs to learn a lesson. Her princess temper has only gotten worse over the years."Bound by the authority of the Don, Victor had no choice but to stop. He didn't dare say another word. But he was still full of shock and doubt. When he'd walked in, he'd clearly seen the wind blow the hair away from my face. My pale skin was covered in large, horrifying patches of livor mortis, and my pupils were already dilated. There was no way that could be faked!"Victor, come with me. I'm going to teach those reckless bastards a lesson."My f
