Chapter 2

Autor: H3PO4
Soon the great hall was packed with people. My father looked in my direction and spoke in a low, heavy voice.

"Ivy, all these people are watching you. Are you still not getting up?"

When I still didn't move, he pounded the table in fury.

Nadia let a few tears fall at just the right moment and spoke in a choked voice.

"I'm sorry you all had to see this... I was only playing a little joke on Ivy today to liven things up.

"But then she suddenly started pretending to be sick, lying on the floor and refusing to get up unless I apologized to her personally. I guess she thinks that since I'm adopted, I don't deserve to be at her birthday party."

My father pressed his hand over hers and picked up where she'd left off.

"Nadia's parents sacrificed themselves for me. In my heart, she'll always be my own daughter.

"Whoever mistreats Nadia will be punished. Even Ivy!"

He pointed at me lying on the floor. At the sight, everyone sucked in a sharp breath.

With every eye on me, I still showed no sign of getting up.

My father's brows knitted tightly as he scolded me.

"Ivy! Are you deliberately trying to humiliate this whole family? Where are your manners? You're supposed to be the Principessa of this Family!"

The only answer was a long silence.

That pushed my father over the edge.

"Fine, Ivy! Lie there forever if you've got the nerve!"

Maria Conti, who'd taken care of me since I was little, knew I'd always been well-behaved and rarely talked back to my father. Sensing something was wrong, she spoke up anxiously.

"Ivy's lying there completely still. I can't even see her chest moving. Could something have happened to her?

"Maybe we should take her to the hospital first. You can still punish her when she gets back."

My mother scoffed.

"She's been faking illness to get attention since she was a child. It's the same old trick. Don't let her fool you!

"She's just playing dead to get sympathy so everyone will blame Nadia."

Adrian stepped forward to explain.

"Don't worry, everyone. I'd stake my life on it. Ivy's perfectly fine. She's just taking shallower breaths to make it look like she isn't breathing at all.

"Once she can't take it anymore, she'll get up on her own."

Adrian was both my fiancé and the man responsible for protecting me within the Family. The moment he said that, the mood in the room flipped completely.

The made men began whispering among themselves.

"I can't believe Miss Ivy is this vicious. She can't even tolerate Nadia."

"Exactly. Nadia's parents sacrificed so much for the Family. We all saw it."

"What a disgrace. Good thing the Don sees right through her and didn't indulge her."

I listened to their vicious remarks, too hopeless to say a word.

Adrian, how could you do this to me?

Have you forgotten? Back then, my father didn't trust you with anything important. You were just a nobody on the fringes of the Family.

I was the one who stood against everyone and pushed my father to give you a chance. That's the only reason you have the success and status you have today.

You once swore before God that you'd protect me with your life.

And now?

I'm already dead, and my body has gone cold. And you still haven't noticed!

The seconds ticked by.

My blood had stopped flowing, and dark purplish discoloration began to appear on my exposed skin.

My pupils were fully dilated, but the hair covering my face hid them from view.

Since I still refused to get up, my father felt humiliated in front of his men and sent them all away.

Only Maria, worried about my health, refused to leave.

"Mr. Russo, Ivy's joints are twisted so strangely. May I go take a look at her?" she asked carefully.

Adrian only wanted me punished. He didn't want me hurt. So he decided to go check on me himself.

He walked toward the terrace. I floated behind him, my heart in my throat.

Were they finally going to find out?

Nadia's phone dropped to the floor. Her smug smile froze."Papa, Mamma, it's not what you heard."Her face went white, and she instinctively backed away.Adrian charged at her like a madman and grabbed her by the throat, squeezing hard."So your parents never died. All these years, you've been framing Ivy!"Nadia's face turned red. She couldn't breathe and struggled desperately.Just as she was about to pass out, Adrian flung her to the floor. Before she could even catch her breath, a slap landed across her face.It was my mother."You bitch! You killed Ivy! Give me back my daughter!"My mother, who had always been so elegant, straddled Nadia and slapped her face again and again.Nadia's lip split and bled, but she suddenly burst into manic laughter. She stared up at my mother."I killed Ivy?"You were the ones who said she was faking! You were the ones who let me prank her! You were the ones who wouldn't let anyone save her!"You drove your own daughter to her death with

"No! You can't punish me!"Nadia knew all too well how brutal the Family's punishments could be. She screamed and hid behind my mother, clutching at her clothes and sobbing so hard she could barely breathe."Mamma, help me! I really only wanted to play a joke on Ivy. I never meant to kill her. I didn't do it on purpose."But this time, my mother didn't do what she always had, giving Nadia anything she wanted the moment she saw her cry.My mother stood there in a daze. She still couldn't believe her own daughter was really dead, or that she herself had unknowingly helped kill me."Nadia, why didn't you tell us that your prank was swapping out Ivy's medicine?"My mother suddenly asked.Nadia froze for a moment, then stammered out an excuse."I... I didn't mean to. You all said... Ivy was always faking being sick..."She seemed to have found a good enough reason, and her voice grew confident."I only wanted to prank her because I listened to you. Yes, that's it. This isn't my fa

The cause of my death still wasn't clear, and the Family never cooperated with the police, so Henry stepped in as the medical examiner. He put on gloves and began examining me."Cyanosis of the lips and nail beds. Livor mortis in the lower parts of the back. A pained expression on the face. Combined with her medical history, this was death from an acute heart attack."He looked around and quickly zeroed in on the pill bottle on the floor and the emergency heart pills scattered all around it."The medicine fell right beside where Ivy was sitting. She should have been able to take it."Henry picked up the bottle and examined it. There was nothing wrong with it. It was ordinary pharmacy packaging. He picked up one of the pills, crushed it, and held it to his nose. A mix of rot and fishiness hit him so hard that he started coughing. He realized right away that it was a nasty-flavored jelly bean.Henry crushed every single pill. Without exception, they were all jelly beans. There wa

"Call the doctor! Hurry!"His eyes bloodshot, Adrian roared at my sister and my mother. He gently kissed my ice-cold forehead and murmured to himself."Ivy, don't be scared. I'm going to save you. You're going to be okay."Adrian carefully laid me down and, with trembling hands, unzipped the side of my dress. The moment the fabric fell away, he saw the large dark purple patches of livor mortis all over my body.Adrian had handled countless bodies in his life. He knew all too well what this degree of stiffness and lividity meant. I'd been dead for a long time. There was no chance of bringing me back. The pain nearly drowned him.But he still refused to accept the cruel truth. Like a madman, he grabbed the defibrillator, pressed it to my chest, and started trying to revive me.It was a defibrillator I'd bought a while back, just in case.Back then, I'd half-jokingly told Adrian that if I ever had a bad attack, he had to use it to save me.But he'd barely glanced at it and mock

For a moment, the air in the living room froze. My father was looking over the documents Victor had handed him. Without even looking up, he waved a hand."Don't make a fuss, Victor. Ivy's just throwing a tantrum."She's lying out there playing dead and won't get up no matter what. There's nothing we can do.""No, Ivy's definitely not playing dead!" Victor shouted, already heading for the terrace."Victor!"My father called him back."Leave her. She needs to learn a lesson. Her princess temper has only gotten worse over the years."Bound by the authority of the Don, Victor had no choice but to stop. He didn't dare say another word. But he was still full of shock and doubt. When he'd walked in, he'd clearly seen the wind blow the hair away from my face. My pale skin was covered in large, horrifying patches of livor mortis, and my pupils were already dilated. There was no way that could be faked!"Victor, come with me. I'm going to teach those reckless bastards a lesson."My f

Adrian had barely set foot on the terrace when my father slammed his hand down on the table."This is getting ridiculous. Are we supposed to beg her to get up now?"Adrian stopped in his tracks, and my father went on."There's a thunderstorm coming. As scared of thunder as she is, she'll come back in on her own."That's enough, Maria. You can go. Ivy's my own daughter too. I'm not going to let anything actually happen to her."Maria gave me a long, searching look, then had no choice but to leave.Adrian sat back down on the sofa. Before long, dark clouds gathered overhead.Outside, the wind howled, and fat raindrops pelted my body.Boom!Thunder exploded, and a flash of lightning lit up my pale, lifeless face.Still, I didn't move. I let the storm beat down on me, my body frozen in that same twisted position.Seeing this, Nadia spoke up, as if out of kindness."Ivy's always been so competitive. If she gets up now, it's like admitting she was faking. She's too proud to back
