Chapter 4

MARKO

“Boss, are you sure this would work?” Piero asked as we both watched Giovanna drive out of my house and I chuckled with a calculated glint in my eyes.

I naturally didn't want her to return to her parents after the marriage but she seemed hysterical after finding out that she might have been tricked.

“I'm positive. She doesn't smell any foul play and I'd try to keep it that way.” I lit a cigarette and drew in the smoke as I just stared at her disappearing out of plain sight.

“All evidence of the stolen shipment still points to her father right?” I queried and Piero nodded.

“That's good. Get Alessandro to the basement for me.” Piero nodded and walked off while I went to the underground basement and waited there.

I could hear feet thudding and wrestling, probably Alessandro making a fuse not knowing exactly why he was being bundled and brought here.

“Alessandro, sit,” I gestured to the empty seat opposite me and he nodded nervously, taking the chair while I signalled Piero to get out.

“The shipment of cocaine was in your care but somehow, you were able to overlook it and let it get stolen. Let me guess, you were too busy with whatever to even put an eye over my shipment?” He stuttered staring back and forth and I quenched the burning cigarette in the ash tray while grabbing a dagger.

“I'm sorry boss. I'll do everything I can to get the goods back.” He was shaking like a leaf and I grabbed him by the arm towards the little drum laying at the corner of the room and without warning, I soaked his head inside of it.

He gasped and kicked, trying to save himself and water splashed on me making me retrieve his head.

“Another drop of water on me and you'll regret ever existing.” I soaked his head again but this time he was still till I removed his head and he fell to the ground gasping.

“Do you know how much a shipment cost?” I bounded his hands behind his back because if what he faced before was torture, then that was only the beginning.

“You know you're one of my most trusted minions and every single time, you find a way to mess up. Not so cool.” I dug the dagger into his shoulder and he grunted before letting out a sharp scream that pierced the air yet seemed like music to my ears.

“I'm sorry, Capobastone.” He pleaded as beads of sweat gathered around his forehead and j sighed, cleaning the blood stain on the dagger with his knife.

“Even worse, since it got missing, you haven't sent out anyone on any rodeo to find it. I'm spending twice as much as I should for that?” He shook his head in negativity and I sighed, anger running through my veins.

“Alessandro, you know I could kill you and no one would breathe a word about it right?” I questioned and he nodded frantically. He swallowed hard, his eyes darting all round and I smiled, standing to my feet.

“The only reason you're not dead yet is because you still have to find my shipments.” He nodded frantically and I grabbed him by the jaw wondering which would be better, using a hammer to break his head open or smashing his skull on the wall.

“That's enough lessons for now, Alessandro. Find my shipments.” I tossed the dagger to a side and folded my sleeves up while exiting the basement before changing my mind and grabbing a seat opposite him.

“Tell me about Giovanna, your ex girlfriend.”

“Sir, she's…she's dramatic sometimes—”

“Not that. I mean her likes and dislikes.” I needed as much information as I could get about her if I was going to use her as bait.

“She's fun to be with and any man's dream. She's supportive, caring and understanding. She has always—” I raised a brow in confusion also raising my hand to cut him off and he stopped talking immediately.

“I said likes and dislikes, I don't want to hear your reminiscing sob story. If she's all this and you still cheated on her, I couldn't care less.”

“I'm sorry, Boss. I'm so sorry. I'll make it up to her, I'll apologize to her.” He screamed and I licked my lips dropping the dagger.

“I'll make it up to her.” He repeated and I shook my head in negativity.

“No, I'll do this my way. I'll advise you to stay far away from her since you can't even help with what she likes.” There was a glint of surprise in his face as I said that but it was easily removed and replaced with the mask of pain.

“Find my shipments.”

“Boss, Piero says there's important news you would want to hear.” One of my minions said falling into step with me as I exited the basement and I shrugged.

“Will I like the news?” He paused for a while beforee shaking his head in negativity.

“I'm not sure about that, boss.” I entered the living room at the same time Piero was entering through the front door and his eyes lit up as he stared at me.

“I've got important news.” He rushed forward with his laptop in hand while he scrolled, opening the tabs.

“That's what I heard. Lay it out.” He stared at me for a moment before dropping the laptop in front of me and my eyes reddened as I stared at the screen.

“Have you found them yet?” I gritted my teeth folding my fist together as veins threatened to pop out of my skin.

“I haven't boss but we're on it.” Piero informed and I chugged down a glass of water but it wasn't helping so I lurged my fist into the wall.

“Round up all the minions! Every single one of them, set up a meeting with the boss of other clans, tell them the Capobastone requested an immediate meeting. I want to know how this happened.” I pointed to the screen and Piero nodded moving immediately.

“One more thing, Piero,” he halted in his steps and swiveled.

“Keep an eye on Giovanna. I don't trust her to be safe in the hands of her dad and besides, I need to know everything about her. Leave no stone untouched.

I ran out before I even realized my legs were moving. The house door slammed behind me so hard that I was shaken as well. Air hit my face, sharp, cool, and for a second I just stood there, hands pressed over my mouth like I could stop the words from spilling out of me if I held my lips shut hard enough. “Lieing bastard!" I cursed. He hadn’t denied it. He hadn’t even tried. That fact felt like a stone in my chest that wouldn’t move. I kept replaying what I’d heard in my head, the sound of his voice, the way his eyes went flat when I said what I’d seen. It should have been a relief, proof, confirmation, something to act on, but it wasn’t. It made everything worse. “But I don't know what to do." I thought. I made myself walk without direction, my feet taking me down the little lane by the sea where the waves sounded distant and steady. The world around me looked normal: dogs barking, a scooter passing, a woman han

MARKO I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Her words hit me like a punch to the gut, and for a moment, I just stood there, frozen, my brain struggling to catch up. Giovanna had never spoken to me like this before, never confronted me so directly. She was upset, yes, but this was different. She wasn’t just upset. She was questioning everything I’d told her. Everything we’d built. “What happened to her? When did she even get the feeling I was a bad man? Why was she suddenly…” I had no idea why she would say something like that. I thought everything was fine between us. We’d been together for a long time now, and despite the ups and downs, I’d always tried to protect her. Tried to keep her out of the mess that was my life. But this? This was something else. “Marko,” she said again, her voice trembling. “You aren’t who you say you are. That’s why we go for all these meetings, and you being away on business trips means you ki

Giovanna The day at Belle’s villa had stretched longer than I expected. The place was beautiful, almost like a dream, high ceilings, soft curtains blowing in the breeze, and a terrace overlooking the ocean. I thought being here would make me relax, but it didn’t. Something about Belle was… different. All day, she kept circling back to one topic: Marko. “So,” Belle said, setting down a tray of drinks between us. “Tell me more about Marko.” I blinked at her, holding the glass she had just handed me. “Why do you keep asking about him?” I tried to sound light, but my voice came out sharper than I wanted. Belle gave me a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Because he’s interesting,” she said simply. “Men like him usually are.” I frowned, swirling the drink in my hand. “Do you know him?” Belle hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Yes,” she said quietly. “I know who M

  • The Don's Prey    Who Are You?

Marko I was sitting at the kitchen table, the soft hum of the island outside filtering through the window. I’d just finished my coffee, but the day felt like it was dragging. My mind kept racing through all the things I needed to do, but there was no urgency. Things were good on the business front, but something felt off. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. The phone buzzed on the table in front of me, pulling me from my thoughts. I glanced at the screen and saw Piero’s name. I didn’t hesitate. Piero never called unless it was important, and I knew this conversation wouldn’t be an exception. I swiped to answer, holding the phone to my ear. “Yeah?” “Marko,” Piero’s voice came through, steady and firm. “We’ve got some news on the buyer front. I think we might have a solid lead.” I leaned back in my chair, setting the phone against my ear. “That’s good. We need to keep the momentum going. What

CLAUDIA I needed a break. I needed to do something. The last few days had felt like a train, too many conversations I wasn’t ready to have, too many lies to keep track of, and too much tension in the air. My nerves were shaking, and I just wanted to get out of the apartment, even if it was only for a little while. So, I decided to go out. Have a little fun. Get some fresh air. Maybe grab a drink at that bar everyone had been talking about. A change of scenery could help me clear my head. No more thinking about Alessandro, Piero, or Marko anything else that made my chest tight. I slipped into a black dress that hugged me just right, simple but enough to make me feel like I wasn’t drowning in my own life for once. A little makeup, some loose waves in my hair, and I was ready to go. I told myself I’d just have one drink, relax for a bit, then head back and deal with whatever I had to face. The bar was busy but not packed, the

Giovanna I was nervous. Not in the way I was when I first arrived at this island, not in the way I felt when I left everything behind to come here with Marko. That had been different uncertainty mingled with excitement, like walking into a new chapter without knowing what the next page would say. But today? Today was different. I was nervous because I didn’t really know what I was walking into. It had been a long day. The morning had been spent wrapped up in my thoughts, trying to settle into this strange new place and figure out exactly what I wanted out of this whole adventure. And now, Belle. I barely knew her, but she had invited me to her villa, and after a bit of convincing, I agreed to come. Maybe I could use a friend, even if it was just for a few hours. I stepped off the car and onto the cobbled path that led to the villa. The villa itself looked like something out of a dream white stone walls and a sprawling gard
