Chapter 1

"What's wrong, Sophia? Haven't you been waiting for Vincent all these years? Now that he's finally back, shouldn't you be planning the wedding? What happened?"

I wanted to tell my grandfather everything. But the moment I opened my mouth, the tears came. Uncontrollable.

He was right. Everyone in the city knew I was in love with Don Vincent White.

From eighteen to twenty-three. Five years.

Three years ago, he took an urgent S-class mission. Before he left, he promised me one thing.

"Wait for me. When I come back, we get married."

Those words. That was all I needed. So I waited.

Three years of waiting.

During that time, I heard every rumor imaginable. People said Vincent was dead. Said he'd run off. Said he was never coming back.

I ignored all of it. I just counted the days until he returned and made me his wife.

Now, everyone in the city knows there are two people they can't cross.

The first is me, Sophia Black. They say I'm ruthless in business. Invincible. That I have only one weakness.

That weakness is Vincent.

And the second person? Don Vincent White himself. The youngest, most ambitious, most dangerous Don in the city.

I understood my grandfather's confusion. Even I hadn't seen this coming. Vincent's three-year mission. All a lie.

I didn't say a word about what I'd heard. But my grandfather must have sensed something. He was quiet for a long moment, then spoke softly.

"If you've truly made up your mind, your grandfather will support you. Come home. I promise you, your future will not be filled with sorrow."

"I'll send a car for you the day after tomorrow. Take care of whatever you need to handle first."

The line went dead. I still held the phone to my ear, frozen.

The conversation I'd overheard kept playing in my head. Vincent and his underboss, Marco Blue.

"You're really going to marry Miss Black? What about Vivian and the boy? Luca is over two years old now. He's your own son. This won't stay hidden forever."

"Back when Vivian was pregnant, you made up every excuse to delay the wedding. But if Miss Black ever finds out—"

Vincent's sharp glare cut Marco off.

"Sophia must never know. My wife will only ever be Sophia. Tell Vivian to watch her mouth and keep that child in line."

Luca. Two years old. His child.

While I spent three years waiting for him to come back and marry me, he already had someone else. A child over two years old.

So what did that make me? The placeholder? The fool?

The thought drove a thousand needles into my heart. The pain spread through my body. I couldn't breathe.

My knees gave way. I collapsed onto the cold floor.

His white shirt was splattered red. His eyes were unfocused. His mouth moved, but the words came out wrong."You—you did this. You ruined everything. If you were gone, Sophia would come back. She would come back to me."He raised the knife again. Brought it down.Again.Again.No one moved. No one dared. The knife was still in his hand, and his eyes had the look of a man who had already left his body. Then, as suddenly as it started, it stopped.Vincent straightened. His eyes cleared. He looked down at the body beneath him. At the blood on his hands. The knife fell from his fingers. It clattered against the stone. He turned. Searched the crowd. Found me."Sophia."His voice was soft. Almost childlike."She's gone now. You don't have to be angry anymore. We can go back to how we were. We can get married. Today. Right now."He took a step toward me. Then another.I stepped back. I couldn't help it. His face was splattered with blood. His hands dripped. He saw me flinch. His expression sh

I turned. My hand connected with his cheek before I knew what I was doing. The slap echoed off the stone walls.Vincent's head snapped to the side. A red handprint bloomed across his face."A fool?" My voice was shaking. "At least a fool doesn't lie to me. At least a fool protects me. What are you, Vincent? What have you ever given me except pain?"I stepped closer."And for the record? He's not a fool. He's my future husband."I turned and walked through the gate. Vincent didn't follow. But he called after me, his voice cracking."Sophia. You hit me. You said what you needed to say. Please. Come back."I stopped at the door."It's not about money, Vincent. It's not about power. It's not about Ethan."I looked back at him one last time."I just don't want you anymore."Inside the garden, Ethan was quiet. His jaw was tight. His hands were clenched at his sides.I reached up and smoothed the furrow between his brows."He's nobody. Don't let him upset you."He didn't speak."You have secr

I hadn't thought about Vincent in weeks. Not really. Not the way I used to—constantly, obsessively, like he was the sun I orbited around.Life with Ethan was simple. Quiet. The Stone estate had a large garden that bloomed all year round. We drank tea in the morning. He painted. I read.Sometimes he would look at me with those dark, unreadable eyes, and I would feel something I hadn't felt in a long time.Safe.Then Vincent found my new number.I don't know how. He had resources I couldn't imagine. But the messages started coming. One after another."Sophia. Please tell me where you are. Let me come to you. Let me explain.""I was wrong. I know I was wrong. Just pick up the phone. Please.""Your grandfather told me you're marrying the Stone family's fool. Why, Sophia? You loved me. You said you would wait for me. Why are you doing this?""I'm begging you, Sophia. Just say something. Anything. I can't breathe without you."I blocked the number. The next morning, I went for a run. The sun

A full week passed. Seven days of silence from Sophia.Vincent couldn't take it anymore. He sent Marco to bring Vivian to the house.Vivian walked in with Luca on her hip, a smug smile already forming. She thought Vincent had cooled down. She thought he had missed her. After all, they had a child together. He couldn't stay angry forever."Vincent, I knew you would come around. Have you heard from Miss Black yet? I told you she wasn't really going to leave you."She shifted Luca to her other arm and stepped closer."What I said before was true. I've seen women like her. They always come back. You just have to wait her out—"She didn't finish the sentence.Vincent's hand closed around her hair. Tight. Pulling. Her words died in her throat. When she saw his face—the cold, flat look in his eyes—she finally understood. She was not here to be welcomed back."Vincent? What are you doing? You're hurting me. Please. I'm scared."His voice came out like ice cracking over a frozen lake."Scared?

Vincent stopped outside the hospital room. He turned and looked through the window on the door.Vivian was still frozen on the bed, her face pale. Luca slept with the IV drip in his small hand.He knew Sophia. She had taken a bullet for him. She had waited three years for a promise he made. She didn't walk away over a small argument.Something else had happened. Something he hadn't seen.He turned and strode toward the hospital exit."Marco. I want everything. Everything that happened while Vivian was in my house. Every conversation. Every look. Every single thing."He pulled open the car door."And I want it yesterday."Meanwhile, I was already home. When my grandfather saw my face, his expression softened. My eyes burned, but I held back the tears. Barely. We talked for a while. Nothing important. Just small talk to fill the silence. He didn't push. He never did. When I finally went to my room, I turned on my phone.Dozens of missed calls. Endless messages. All from Vincent."Sophia,

After sending the message, I silenced my phone. Almost immediately, it started ringing. Vincent."Sophia, don't do this, okay? I know having Vivian and Luca here has been hard on you. Once Luca is better, I'll send them away. I promise.""I was short with you earlier. That was my fault. But Luca is not even three years old. You shouldn't have done what you did, either.""Come on. Stop this. I'm exhausted. I—"I cut him off."Then stop exhausting yourself, Vincent. You know me. I don't joke about things like this."I didn't wait for his response. I hung up. Turned off the phone. Leaned back into the seat and closed my eyes.At the hospital, Vincent called Sophia again. Then again. No answer. He called Marco."Go to the house. Sophia's not in a good mood. She probably won't remember to eat. Bring her something. I'll be back as soon as I'm done here."An hour later, Luca was out of danger. Vincent sat by the boy's bed, checking his phone every few seconds.Nothing.He sent messages. Read
