Chapter 2

مؤلف: Soda
I didn't expect to see Matteo again the very next day.

The battered door flew open again. Matteo stepped inside. Camila followed on his arm, flanked by two armed guards.

He had shed his coat. His charcoal shirt was rolled up to his forearms, stretching tight over his broad shoulders. He towered over the small room like a storm.

I sat huddled on my thin mattress, crushing a bloody tissue in my fist. My chest burned from swallowing every cough.

"Our princess is getting lazier. Still in bed in the middle of the day?" Matteo stopped a few feet away, his tone lazy and teasing.

For a split second, my mind slipped. I thought I was back in the days when he was still our underboss. I always stayed up late and refused to get up, and he would wake me up with endless patience. But a second later, his tone stayed smooth as he dragged me straight back to reality.

"Five years ago, you slapped the ring box out of my hand in front of a hundred made men. You called me a gutter rat. You had a lot more spine back then."

His voice didn't even waver. Five years ago, he knelt before me like his soul had been ripped out. Now, that humiliation didn't even make him blink. It was just a memory. He really didn't care anymore.

Beside him, Camila smirked. A massive pear-cut diamond flashed on her finger as she rested her hand over her baby bump.

"Let it go, babe," Camila purred. "If Miss Vane hadn't been stupid enough to run off with the rival heir, I wouldn't have you all to myself today."

She stepped closer, glancing over my hollow cheeks with open mockery. "I should thank her for having zero taste. But Matteo, we didn't come here to talk about the past. We have business."

She looked up at him, tugging his arm. "Your private armory in Long Island is huge. I don't know the first thing about handguns. Miss Vane used to run all the smuggling lines, so she knows weapons best. Let her pick out the ivory-grip Browning for me. She can help select the wedding whiskey for the bosses, too. What do you think?"

I gripped the sheet. The IV bruise on my hand stung. We grew up together. The day he said he loved me, he swore every gun in his arsenal belonged to me. For years, I was his spoiled little princess. When my feet got cold in winter, he held them in his warm hands until they thawed. He never let anyone speak a single harsh word to me.

Then five years ago, I ripped his heart out with the cruelest lies. Now, he stood there and watched another woman spit on my memories. This was my punishment.

A dull ache slammed into my chest. The metallic taste rushed up my throat.

"Stop humiliating her!" Elena snapped. She jumped up from the corner, shaking with rage. "We owe you money, not our dignity!"

A guard drew his piece in a flash. The cold metal barrel pressed hard against her temple. A sharp click echoed in the room.

"Move again, and we won't be gentle," the guard said, his voice completely flat.

"Mom, don't!" I threw myself off the bed. I wrapped my frail arms around her waist. The sudden jolt tore through my insides. I couldn't stop it. Dark blood burst from my mouth, splattering the filthy carpet.

The guards didn't flinch. Until Matteo raised his hand, they lowered their weapons and stepped back.

Matteo's brow furrowed. He glanced at the pool of blood on the floor. "Coughing up blood? Are you sick?" He waved at his guard. "Call the family doctor. I'm not having my debtor drop dead before the bills are paid."

I forced a chuckle. "No need. It's just stage blood. A friend brought it back from a movie set. Looks real, doesn't it?"

His tension eased. He looked down at me. "If you're fine, let's move. Pick the gun. Taste the wine. That's how you start paying interest on your debt."

"Fine." I bit down on my lip. The pain kept me from passing out. I wiped the blood from my mouth and hauled myself to my feet.

I locked eyes with him. Those gray eyes that once looked at me with tenderness.

"I'll go," I rasped. "As long as the Boss isn't worried my gun might go off at the altar."

He tossed the audio files and video stills right into their faces."Matteo... no! Let me explain! None of that is real!" Camila's face turned white as chalk. She screamed, clawing at the hem of his trousers.Matteo looked down at her. His eyes looked like he was staring at rotting garbage."We both know whose bastard you're carrying. Did you really think you could play Donna?"He turned to his men without looking back. "Strip every trust and property under her name. Send her to an unlicensed cargo ship in international waters. Abort the bastard. Let her spend the rest of her life in the dark hold, never setting foot on land again."He leveled his barrel straight at the trembling house manager. "As for you, swallow the b

"Take you to her?" Tara let out a wild, broken laugh. She slapped his hand away. Her tears mixed with pure hatred, hitting the wet steps. "You think you deserve to see her, Matteo? I'll take that grave to my own death before I let a bastard like you taint her peace!"She shoved past the frozen guards and vanished into the pouring rain.Dead silence fell over the altar.Matteo stood paralyzed. His chest felt ripped open from the inside out. He spun around, his bloodshot eyes locking onto the trembling house manager like a predator."Get over here." The next morning. St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan.Black armored SUVs lined the perimeter, locking down the entire street. Armed guards in tailored suits stood silent outside the heavy stone doors.Matteo stood at the altar in a crisp white suit, his face an unreadable mask. The priest spoke his quiet prayers. Matteo barely heard him. His eyes scanned the crowded pews, searching desperately. The single row reserved for the Vane family was completely empty.Camila hooked her hand around his arm, her silk wedding dress trailing behind her. She flashed a dazzling smile for the cameras. "Matteo, everyone is watching. It's time to toast the old heads."Matteo picked up a crystal champagne glass from a silver tray like an empty shell. He stepped toward the table where the retired captains of the Vane syndicate sat.A violent crash shattered the silence.A woman surged up from the end of the long table. With a furious roar, she flipped the entire wooden banquet table onto its side!Cryst

"The baby's heartbeat is stable. Just mild contractions. She just needs bed rest."The doctor's words echoed down the hallway. Matteo stood outside the private hospital room, nodding half-heartedly.Camila sobbed, her eyes red and puffy, begging him to make Sienna pay. He kept his voice flat: "You're tired. The guards will take you home."His mind was a complete mess. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Sienna's paper-pale face on the lounge floor. She looked fragile. After he returned to his family, he swore to climb to the top of North America and make her regret it.He suffered through five years of hell. He clawed his way up from street soldier to Don. Matteo didn't contact me for days after that. Not until a week later, on what would have been our eighth anniversary if we hadn't broken up.When the reminder chime sounded on my phone, I froze.I looked down at the old note set years ago: Drink with Matteo today. I let out a hollow laugh. People change, promises break. I assumed I was the only fool who still remembered. An hour later, a heavy knock echoed on the apartment door. I opened it to a familiar face."Thought I forgot?" Matteo said, his voice flat. "We set that reminder together."He took me to a private room at an exclusive club. He slammed a bottle of bourbon onto the table. It was the exact bottle he had sealed in the cellar eight years ago, the night we made our private vow.Matteo stared at me. He poured a glass to the brim and pushed it in front of me. "What's wrong, Princess? Won't do me the honor?"Once upon a time, that wouldn't have been hard. My father had trained me to drink since I was a girl. Growing up, I loved

Rain hammered the pier. The wind off the water was freezing, biting through my thin coat. My lips turned purple. My teeth knocked together so hard they ached. He said nine. Ten came and went. The pier stayed empty. I called his line three times. Each time, it rang once before he sent it straight to voicemail. On the fourth try, Camila picked up. "So sorry, Miss Vane. Matteo is busy right now. Do you mind waiting a little longer?""Let's go home, Sienna," Elena pleaded, pulling at my sleeve. "He's playing with you.""Just a little longer, Mom." The world spun around me. Every bone in my body throbbed. I forced a small smile anyway. I didn't have much time left. This was one of the last chances I would ever get to see him. So I stood there until one in the afternoon.A line of black SUVs splashed through the dirty puddles. The convoy pulled up in front of the rusted shipping container. A guard opened the door. Camila stepped down first. She hung off Matteo's arm, her glossed red lips cur
