Chapter 2

Author: Redleaves
The next morning, I called the inner council.

Marcello sat at my right hand, still pretending to be my loyal brother while running half the Family for me.

He’d just proposed giving the Hudson Casino security contract to one of his loyalists. I tossed the file back across the table.

“The budget is forty percent too high, and three people on this roster were expelled from the Family.”

Marcello flipped through the file. His smile disappeared.

“It’s a first draft. I’ll review it again.”

“If you’re bringing work this sloppy into my council chamber, your mind must be somewhere else.”

Several capos around the long table turned to look at him.

Marcello lowered his head. “It was my oversight, Don.”

“Redo it by tonight.”

“Yes, Don.”

When the meeting ended, he walked past me with the same respectful expression, but the tension in his shoulders gave him away.

I knew exactly what he resented.

For the past six months, I’d left New York in his hands while I expanded the Family’s business in Miami.

He’d grown used to running meetings for me, throwing around his title as underboss, and entering my home whenever I was away.

I’d never minded sharing power with him before.

Marcello was six years older than me. When our father was alive, he’d taken a bullet for me. Later, when everyone questioned whether I was too young to lead, Marcello was the first to accept me as Don.

I’d believed that even though there could only be one Don, we could still share everything the way we had as kids.

Apparently, Marcello felt the same way. He’d just decided my wife was included.

I didn’t expose him yet.

Marcello had always been proud. Every time I reminded him who was Don, he’d need Elena even more to prove he wasn’t beneath me.

At two in the afternoon, Elena left the foundation.

After she’d fallen asleep the night before, I’d slipped a tracker into her favorite lipstick. Now I watched the red dot travel three streets before stopping at the Ashton Hotel.

It was the same hotel where we’d held our wedding reception seven years ago.

That night, Elena had stood before me in her white wedding gown and slipped her hand into mine. Then she’d quietly asked if she was worthy of becoming the Donna.

I pinned the Black Eagle on her and told her that as long as I was alive, no one would ever make her bow.

Now she was using my name to meet my brother at the very same hotel.

The Ashton belonged to me, too.

I called the hotel manager.

“Upgrade her room to the penthouse suite.”

The manager didn’t pry. He only asked, “Do you want the security cameras activated?”

“All of them.”

Twenty minutes later, he called back.

“Mrs. Vitale is very pleased. We mentioned her wedding here seven years ago, and she said the dress was outdated.”

I held the phone in silence.

Seven years of marriage, and that was what our wedding meant to her now: an outdated dress.

But I still remembered every detail.

She’d been so nervous walking down the aisle that she nearly tripped on her train. After the vows, she’d curled against me and whispered, asking whether I would be good to her for the rest of our lives.

I told her I would.

Only now did I understand that I’d been the only one who treated that wedding as a once-in-a-lifetime promise.

Some part of me had still been waiting for a single second of hesitation from her.

I wasn’t waiting anymore.

At three o’clock, I deliberately told my secretary Nick that I was heading to the North Dock for an audit and wouldn’t be back for at least four hours.

Nick was Elena’s distant cousin. For the past six months, whenever my schedule changed at the last minute, Marcello somehow found out.

I’d barely stepped into the elevator when Nick’s voice came through the wiretap.

“He’s headed to the North Dock. Won’t be back before tonight.”

From now on, the eyes planted at my side would see only what I wanted them to see.

At three forty, my car pulled up outside the Ashton.

I didn’t go in right away.

On the penthouse camera feed, Elena sat on Marcello’s lap, smiling as she loosened his tie.

I turned off the screen and waited in the car until my hands stopped shaking.

A Don couldn’t walk into that lobby carrying a husband’s rage.

When I stepped out of the car, Marcello was slipping away through a side corridor. Elena walked toward the main entrance alone, fixing her hair and adjusting her collar.

She spotted me. Her steps froze for half a second. Then she smiled and slipped her arm through mine.

“Leon? What are you doing here?

“The foundation set up a meeting with a donor, but they canceled at the last minute. I was just about to head back.”

She said it without a single pause.

I caught the scent of Marcello’s cologne on her, and my stomach turned.

Elena went on complaining about the donor’s last-minute cancellation.

I looked over her shoulder at the man about to slip out the side door.

“Marcello.”

“What are you going to do?”Elena’s voice was hoarse.“Tell everyone the truth.”I turned off the TV.“You don’t have to sign. Tomorrow, the full footage and the message history go to Marcello’s lawyer and to every Elder in the Vitale Family.“Then everyone will know you weren’t a victim coerced by the underboss. You were a woman who willingly betrayed her husband, then framed her lover to keep her place as Donna.”Elena sank to the floor.Marcello was filing an appeal. The moment that evidence went public, he might not walk free right away, but it would be enough to put her on the hook for filing a false report and perjury.More importantly, the Vitale Family would never protect a Donna who had betrayed both the Don and his own blood.“Leon, you’re ruthless.”She looked up at me, the pleading in her eyes slowly turning into resentment.“You made me destroy Marcello, and now you’re using that against me to force me out. You never intended to forgive me.”“No.”“Then why did you hold me

The day Marcello’s sentence became official, I returned to the estate and placed two documents in front of Elena. She was sitting on the couch, watching the court coverage. On screen, Marcello was being loaded into a prison transport. She watched her former lover with something close to relief.“Leon, what’s this?”She picked up the top document. It was a divorce and asset settlement agreement.Beneath it lay the Vitale Family’s formal notice stripping her of her Donna title. The smile vanished from Elena’s face.“What do you mean by this?”“Exactly what it says.” I sat down across from her. “Sign it.”“Why?” Tears came instantly. “Because Marcello touched me, you think I’m dirty now?“I’m the victim. You said you’d protect me.”“Elena, drop the act.”Her crying stopped.“Remember the cream pastry at home?“You said Sophia brought it. But that night she was three hundred miles away, sealing a shipment with me.”The color drained from Elena’s face.“From that moment, I knew another man

Elena and I went to the police station together, her as the victim, me as the husband. She broke down crying several times in front of the female officer but never forgot a single detail that made Marcello look guilty. She described how he’d approached her while I was away, threatened to tear the Family apart, and forced her to meet him at the hotel again and again.I sat beside her the entire time, handing her tissues and helping with the dates and times she couldn’t remember. When her hands grew cold, I held them. When she said she was scared, I had my lawyer pause the questioning. To everyone else, I was a husband standing by his wife no matter what.Only I knew that every small act of care brought seven years of memories rushing back. She’d once sat by my bed all night when I was wounded. The first time I took the Don’s seat, she’d pulled me into an empty corridor just to straighten my bloodstained collar. Those moments had been real. That was precisely why every betrayal that came

The NYPD Special Victims Unit officers came through the door first. Two officers pinned Marcello to the floor while Elena clutched her torn clothes to her body, crying no over and over.Marcello still thought she was putting on an act.“Get off me! She was willing!”Behind the officers came the hotel manager, my lawyer, and two PR consultants for the Vitale Family.Everyone saw the blood on my lip and Marcello on top of the Donna.I didn’t try to explain anything. I simply told my lawyer to preserve the full police record and the hallway surveillance footage. The evidence would say the rest for me.A female officer draped a blanket over Elena. She was trembling.I stood by the door and watched her.She noticed me watching and slowly stopped crying.I didn’t rush her. I simply picked up the Donna’s pin from the floor and held it in my hand.Elena stared at the pin and finally made her choice.“He forced me.”Marcello stopped struggling. She raised her hand and pointed at him, her voice

The bed was still unmade, and one of Marcello’s cuff links lay beside the pillow.Elena stood in the doorway, forcing herself to smile.“This is someone else’s room. Let’s go.”I locked the door behind us and turned on the TV.On the screen, she was sitting in Marcello’s lap, unbuttoning his shirt.A moment later, her voice filled the room.“Turn it off… Leon, please turn it off.”She lunged for the remote. I grabbed it first and kept the recording playing. On screen, Marcello asked her, “What if Leon comes back right now?”Elena smiled and kissed him.“He could never bring himself to blame me. As long as I cry, he always ends up comforting me.”I looked at Elena standing in front of me.She was already on her knees, her tears falling right on cue.“It was only this once. Marcello forced me. He said you’d be away from New York for a while. If I refused, he’d cause trouble inside the Family.”Even with the truth playing right in front of her, she still thought a few tears could turn her

I hadn’t raised my voice, but the lobby went quiet.Marcello stopped and turned. By the time he faced me, surprise was already plastered across his face.“Don? Nick said you’d be at the North Dock.”What he’d blurted out was the real question: how my movements had slipped out of his control.“Do I need to report my whereabouts to you?”Marcello held my gaze for two seconds, then lowered his head. “Of course not.”“Did you revise the casino contract?”“I have a meeting here to renegotiate the bid.”Elena immediately moved closer to me.“Oh, Marcello’s here too? Perfect.”She looked up at me and smiled as if she’d only just noticed him.“Your brother handles so much for you. Even if he doesn’t get the credit, he deserves something for all the work he puts in. If there isn’t anything seriously wrong with the contract, give it to his people.”She still wore the Donna’s pin I’d placed on her chest. Just beneath it were the hickeys Marcello had left on her minutes earlier.Looking at her, I
