Chapter 1

“Sophia was here?”

I set Elena down.

She glanced at the pastry, then quickly moved back into my arms.

“You weren’t here. I get scared alone in a place this big. Sophia had some free time, so she stayed with me last night.”

She said it so easily that I couldn’t catch even a trace of guilt.

For seven years, whenever she said she was afraid, I stationed bodyguards on every floor. When she refused to leave New York, I divided my business between two cities and made the six-hundred-mile round trip every week.

I’d always thought those sacrifices were what kept our marriage together.

“I’m hungry.” I pushed her away. “Go take a shower. I’ll make dinner.”

Elena’s eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Leon, you just got home and you’re already being cold to me. You didn’t even miss me, did you?”

Before today, her tears would have made me give in immediately.

But as she stood on her toes to kiss me, her robe slipped open at the collar, revealing several fading hickeys on her chest.

My hands froze around her waist.

She didn’t notice. She pressed closer, her voice sweet and playful. “Carry me to the bathroom.”

Out of habit, I picked her up and carried her to the bathroom door.

Seven years of habit didn’t disappear overnight. Even after seeing those marks, my body still remembered exactly how she liked to be held.

“Go wash up.”

She laughed and playfully pushed me, thinking I was teasing her.

Once I heard the shower running, her phone lit up on the counter.

The caller ID showed a single word: Daddy.

I had barely reached for the phone when the bathroom door flew open. Elena rushed out barefoot and snatched it from my hand.

“The foundation is expecting a donation. I didn’t want to miss the call.”

She quickly hung up and smiled at me.

“Go start cooking. I’ll be right down.”

The door locked behind her again.

I went to the study and opened her tablet. The passcode was still our wedding anniversary.

The pinned conversation was from “Daddy.”

“Leon’s back. Stop texting me.”

“What are you scared of? That’s not what you said in his bed.”

“That’s because he wasn’t home.”

“Even if he were, all he could do is watch.”

I stared at the messages, my chest so tight I could barely breathe.

They’d done it in our bed. Above the headboard hung our wedding photo, with her arm linked through mine as she promised to stand by me through honor and disgrace.

Another message came through. This time, it was a voice note.

I pressed play.

“Baby, tomorrow afternoon, meet me at the Ashton Hotel again. That husband of yours who only cares about business, he won’t be back in New York until at least the day after tomorrow.”

It was Marcello.

My own brother. My underboss. The man I trusted more than anyone.

After our father died, Marcello had supported me while I was wounded and helped me into the council chamber. In front of everyone, he’d sworn that he would always have my back.

When Elena and I got married, he stood behind me as my best man.

That night, after we’d both had too much to drink, I handed Marcello the spare key to our home and asked him to look after Elena if anything ever happened to me.

He took the key and clapped me on the shoulder. “She’s your wife first, the Vitale Family’s Donna second. I won’t let anyone take advantage of her.”

For seven years, I’d believed him without question.

Now he’d slept with my wife and made a joke of me in our own marriage bed.

I scrolled back to the beginning of their messages.

The affair had been going on for six months.

It started the day after I left for Miami to negotiate a new shipping route for the Family.

That night, Elena had called me, saying she couldn’t sleep alone and just wanted to hear my voice.

I left my meeting and stayed on the phone with her until dawn.

The moment we hung up, she went straight to Marcello’s room.

There was a gun in the desk drawer. I didn’t touch it.

Killing Marcello would have been easy. But death was too quick after six months of humiliating me.

I wanted them wide awake, watching everything they cared about most slip away, one piece at a time.

I saved every message and put the tablet back exactly where I’d found it.

By the time Elena came downstairs, I’d already pulled out her chair. Her favorite red wine and a medium-rare steak were waiting on the table.

She kissed me on the cheek. “Don, nobody spoils me like you do.”

Once, those words would have melted me.

Now all I could think about was her using that same tone when she called Marcello “Daddy.”

“Was the trip to Miami exhausting?” she asked. “Will you have to go again next month?”

She didn’t care if I was tired. She was asking how much time the next trip would leave for them.

“I’ll be going back.” I refilled her glass.

Elena lowered her head to sip her wine, but a pleased little smile still slipped through.

I used to live for that smile. I’d delayed deals, rearranged my schedule, and made the entire Family recognize her as more than a decoration on her husband’s arm.

Yet she’d turned that respect into the freedom to betray me.

I cut a piece of steak and placed it on her plate.

She hated cutting her own steak. I’d done it for her since our first year together.

Elena ate it without even looking at me. By now, my care was something she simply expected, just like the estate, the bodyguards, and the authority of the Donna.

She’d never imagined she could lose any of it.

“Eat up.” I pushed her plate closer. “I’ll make sure you get everything you deserve.”

“What are you going to do?”Elena’s voice was hoarse.“Tell everyone the truth.”I turned off the TV.“You don’t have to sign. Tomorrow, the full footage and the message history go to Marcello’s lawyer and to every Elder in the Vitale Family.“Then everyone will know you weren’t a victim coerced by the underboss. You were a woman who willingly betrayed her husband, then framed her lover to keep her place as Donna.”Elena sank to the floor.Marcello was filing an appeal. The moment that evidence went public, he might not walk free right away, but it would be enough to put her on the hook for filing a false report and perjury.More importantly, the Vitale Family would never protect a Donna who had betrayed both the Don and his own blood.“Leon, you’re ruthless.”She looked up at me, the pleading in her eyes slowly turning into resentment.“You made me destroy Marcello, and now you’re using that against me to force me out. You never intended to forgive me.”“No.”“Then why did you hold me

The day Marcello’s sentence became official, I returned to the estate and placed two documents in front of Elena. She was sitting on the couch, watching the court coverage. On screen, Marcello was being loaded into a prison transport. She watched her former lover with something close to relief.“Leon, what’s this?”She picked up the top document. It was a divorce and asset settlement agreement.Beneath it lay the Vitale Family’s formal notice stripping her of her Donna title. The smile vanished from Elena’s face.“What do you mean by this?”“Exactly what it says.” I sat down across from her. “Sign it.”“Why?” Tears came instantly. “Because Marcello touched me, you think I’m dirty now?“I’m the victim. You said you’d protect me.”“Elena, drop the act.”Her crying stopped.“Remember the cream pastry at home?“You said Sophia brought it. But that night she was three hundred miles away, sealing a shipment with me.”The color drained from Elena’s face.“From that moment, I knew another man

Elena and I went to the police station together, her as the victim, me as the husband. She broke down crying several times in front of the female officer but never forgot a single detail that made Marcello look guilty. She described how he’d approached her while I was away, threatened to tear the Family apart, and forced her to meet him at the hotel again and again.I sat beside her the entire time, handing her tissues and helping with the dates and times she couldn’t remember. When her hands grew cold, I held them. When she said she was scared, I had my lawyer pause the questioning. To everyone else, I was a husband standing by his wife no matter what.Only I knew that every small act of care brought seven years of memories rushing back. She’d once sat by my bed all night when I was wounded. The first time I took the Don’s seat, she’d pulled me into an empty corridor just to straighten my bloodstained collar. Those moments had been real. That was precisely why every betrayal that came

The NYPD Special Victims Unit officers came through the door first. Two officers pinned Marcello to the floor while Elena clutched her torn clothes to her body, crying no over and over.Marcello still thought she was putting on an act.“Get off me! She was willing!”Behind the officers came the hotel manager, my lawyer, and two PR consultants for the Vitale Family.Everyone saw the blood on my lip and Marcello on top of the Donna.I didn’t try to explain anything. I simply told my lawyer to preserve the full police record and the hallway surveillance footage. The evidence would say the rest for me.A female officer draped a blanket over Elena. She was trembling.I stood by the door and watched her.She noticed me watching and slowly stopped crying.I didn’t rush her. I simply picked up the Donna’s pin from the floor and held it in my hand.Elena stared at the pin and finally made her choice.“He forced me.”Marcello stopped struggling. She raised her hand and pointed at him, her voice

The bed was still unmade, and one of Marcello’s cuff links lay beside the pillow.Elena stood in the doorway, forcing herself to smile.“This is someone else’s room. Let’s go.”I locked the door behind us and turned on the TV.On the screen, she was sitting in Marcello’s lap, unbuttoning his shirt.A moment later, her voice filled the room.“Turn it off… Leon, please turn it off.”She lunged for the remote. I grabbed it first and kept the recording playing. On screen, Marcello asked her, “What if Leon comes back right now?”Elena smiled and kissed him.“He could never bring himself to blame me. As long as I cry, he always ends up comforting me.”I looked at Elena standing in front of me.She was already on her knees, her tears falling right on cue.“It was only this once. Marcello forced me. He said you’d be away from New York for a while. If I refused, he’d cause trouble inside the Family.”Even with the truth playing right in front of her, she still thought a few tears could turn her

I hadn’t raised my voice, but the lobby went quiet.Marcello stopped and turned. By the time he faced me, surprise was already plastered across his face.“Don? Nick said you’d be at the North Dock.”What he’d blurted out was the real question: how my movements had slipped out of his control.“Do I need to report my whereabouts to you?”Marcello held my gaze for two seconds, then lowered his head. “Of course not.”“Did you revise the casino contract?”“I have a meeting here to renegotiate the bid.”Elena immediately moved closer to me.“Oh, Marcello’s here too? Perfect.”She looked up at me and smiled as if she’d only just noticed him.“Your brother handles so much for you. Even if he doesn’t get the credit, he deserves something for all the work he puts in. If there isn’t anything seriously wrong with the contract, give it to his people.”She still wore the Donna’s pin I’d placed on her chest. Just beneath it were the hickeys Marcello had left on her minutes earlier.Looking at her, I
