The next morning, I called the inner council.Marcello sat at my right hand, still pretending to be my loyal brother while running half the Family for me.He’d just proposed giving the Hudson Casino security contract to one of his loyalists. I tossed the file back across the table.“The budget is forty percent too high, and three people on this roster were expelled from the Family.”Marcello flipped through the file. His smile disappeared.“It’s a first draft. I’ll review it again.”“If you’re bringing work this sloppy into my council chamber, your mind must be somewhere else.”Several capos around the long table turned to look at him.Marcello lowered his head. “It was my oversight, Don.”“Redo it by tonight.”“Yes, Don.”When the meeting ended, he walked past me with the same respectful expression, but the tension in his shoulders gave him away.I knew exactly what he resented. For the past six months, I’d left New York in his hands while I expanded the Family’s business in Miami. He

The bed was still unmade, and one of Marcello’s cuff links lay beside the pillow.Elena stood in the doorway, forcing herself to smile.“This is someone else’s room. Let’s go.”I locked the door behind us and turned on the TV.On the screen, she was sitting in Marcello’s lap, unbuttoning his shirt.A moment later, her voice filled the room.“Turn it off… Leon, please turn it off.”She lunged for the remote. I grabbed it first and kept the recording playing. On screen, Marcello asked her, “What if Leon comes back right now?”Elena smiled and kissed him.“He could never bring himself to blame me. As long as I cry, he always ends up comforting me.”I looked at Elena standing in front of me.She was already on her knees, her tears falling right on cue.“It was only this once. Marcello forced me. He said you’d be away from New York for a while. If I refused, he’d cause trouble inside the Family.”Even with the truth playing right in front of her, she still thought a few tears could turn her

Elena and I went to the police station together, her as the victim, me as the husband. She broke down crying several times in front of the female officer but never forgot a single detail that made Marcello look guilty. She described how he’d approached her while I was away, threatened to tear the Family apart, and forced her to meet him at the hotel again and again.I sat beside her the entire time, handing her tissues and helping with the dates and times she couldn’t remember. When her hands grew cold, I held them. When she said she was scared, I had my lawyer pause the questioning. To everyone else, I was a husband standing by his wife no matter what.Only I knew that every small act of care brought seven years of memories rushing back. She’d once sat by my bed all night when I was wounded. The first time I took the Don’s seat, she’d pulled me into an empty corridor just to straighten my bloodstained collar. Those moments had been real. That was precisely why every betrayal that came

“What are you going to do?”Elena’s voice was hoarse.“Tell everyone the truth.”I turned off the TV.“You don’t have to sign. Tomorrow, the full footage and the message history go to Marcello’s lawyer and to every Elder in the Vitale Family.“Then everyone will know you weren’t a victim coerced by the underboss. You were a woman who willingly betrayed her husband, then framed her lover to keep her place as Donna.”Elena sank to the floor.Marcello was filing an appeal. The moment that evidence went public, he might not walk free right away, but it would be enough to put her on the hook for filing a false report and perjury.More importantly, the Vitale Family would never protect a Donna who had betrayed both the Don and his own blood.“Leon, you’re ruthless.”She looked up at me, the pleading in her eyes slowly turning into resentment.“You made me destroy Marcello, and now you’re using that against me to force me out. You never intended to forgive me.”“No.”“Then why did you hold me
