Chapter 2

Author: Seren
I was woken early the next morning by the noise of commotion.

The servants were hauling boxes out of my studio—one after another.

It was the brightest room in the manor, and the only sanctuary I had when things got too heavy.

"What are you doing?" I called out, stopping them.

Lorenzo walked over from the other end of the hallway and waved for the servants to keep going.

"Lily, Vella's performing a dance at the gala. She needs a spacious place to practice. Your studio's the perfect size—so I had it cleared out."

On the floor lay scattered brushes and crumpled sketches, carelessly folded.

I pressed a hand to my chest, where the anger was building tight, and said coldly:

"That's my studio, Lorenzo. You didn't think to ask me first?"

Lorenzo smoothed his cuffs, unconcerned.

"Lily, you haven't painted in ages—not since we got married. It's a waste of space sitting empty. Vella's performance matters to the family's image, and as Donna, you should be gracious."

I looked at his self-righteous face and felt something hollow settle in my chest.

Three years ago, when I first moved in, this wasn't a studio.

Lorenzo had personally hired an architect to knock down an entire wall and install floor-to-ceiling windows—just to give me the perfect light.

The day it was finished, he laid out my brushes and paints one by one, his voice soft:

"Lily, I know you love painting. I know you regret giving up that spot at the academy. I want you to know—even when you become Donna, I still want you to hold onto what you love. Leave the family matters to me. I just want you to be happy."

Back then, I truly believed I'd found the right man.

But after the wedding, the Lorenzo empire came under pressure from rival families. He was constantly overwhelmed.

I was the one who felt for him. I set down my brushes, picked up the ledgers, managed the banquets and social engagements flawlessly. Turned myself into the composed, steady, always-thinking-of-the-bigger-picture Donna.

And over time, he started taking it for granted.

Every time I wanted to step into my studio, he'd look mildly displeased, nudging me toward unfinished family business.

And now he was blaming me for wasting the room.

"Fine. Do what you want."

I didn't argue the way I used to. I just said it flatly.

Then I turned and walked out.

That afternoon, Lorenzo took me to try on my gala gown.

As Donna, my dress had been in the making for six months—the hem embroidered with irises, the symbol of the family's matriarch.

I'd just put it on when Vella walked in, Lorenzo at her side.

Her eyes lit up at the sight of me in the gown—then she twisted her face into a pitiful look and turned to Lorenzo.

"Lorenzo, my dress has a hole in it—I can't wear it now. If I show up without a proper gown, the other families' daughters will laugh at me."

Lorenzo frowned, scanned the boutique, and his gaze landed on me.

"Lily. Take yours off and give it to Vella."

The boutique owner gasped and stepped forward.

"Mr. Falcone, this gown was custom-made to Mrs. Falcone's measurements—and it carries the Donna's emblem. How could Miss Ricci wear this?"

Lorenzo cut her off without a second thought.

"Vella is family too. I can't bear to see her embarrassed at the gala."

He turned to me, his voice cool.

"Lily, there are plenty of other dresses in the store. Pick whichever one you like."

"Everyone in the other families already knows who you are. You don't need a dress to prove it."

I looked at myself in the mirror.

The iris embroidery. The symbol of everything I'd given to this family for three years.

And to him, it was just something to take off and hand over to make his sister happy.

I turned without a word, walked into the fitting room, changed out of the gown, and handed it to Vella.

She put it on excitedly—the hem was a little long.

Lorenzo crouched down without hesitation and adjusted the hem for her with his own hands.

The owner laughed awkwardly. "The Don is so considerate."

I stood there watching his back as he knelt at Vella's feet, and felt my stomach churn.

At our wedding three years ago, my train got caught on the carpet.

Lorenzo did the same thing—in front of the whole city's elite, dropped to his knees without a second thought, and carefully worked my train free from the carpet fibers.

People teased him then, saying how unusual it was for a proud Don to be so attentive.

He just smiled, took my hand, and declared to everyone:

"In this lifetime, I'll only ever bow my head for Lily. Because she is my only choice."

I held onto that image for three full years.

And now, without a flicker of hesitation, he was kneeling at another girl's feet. Doing the exact same thing.

As if I were the one standing on the outside.

Watching them laugh and chat, I felt nothing stir in me anymore.

I just pulled out my phone and typed a single line, calm and steady:

"Professor, the tickets are booked. Three days from now—the night of the family meeting—I leave on time."

A year later. At one of Europe's premier art venues, Henry sponsored a grand solo exhibition for me.No Lorenzo. No selfish parents. My paintings hung at the very center of the hall—drawing crowds of European elites and art critics, all pausing in awe.An hour before the exhibition opened, my phone buzzed. A message from an unknown Italian number, no name attached:"Lily, I never imagined you'd become this brilliant. I hope you find happiness in all the days to come."I read it calmly, swiped it away, and hit delete. At the same moment, inside the Lorenzo estate manor.Lorenzo sat alone in what used to be their master bedroom. Darkness everywhere, only the glow of his phone lighting up his haggard face. This room had once belonged to them. Now, in the closet, hung one sweater Lily had forgotten to take.He buried his face in it, breathing in whatever trace of her still lingered. After Lily left, the Lorenzo family had fallen on hard times. Their disgrace at the networking gala had made

The day after Lorenzo and my parents left, Vella showed up at the gallery alone. She stared at me, eyes burning with jealousy."Lily. You think you've won?""Lorenzo turned me down, sure—and he's been hunting for you like a madman. But in his heart, you're still just my replacement.""If you really meant that much to him, why did he hand you that cheap old brooch? Why did he give my gown to me?"I looked at her twisted face and felt nothing but contempt."Then why are you here today?" I said, my voice flat. "Because you figured out that even after moving into the manor, even wearing my dress—you could never be the real Donna.""You—!"Vella shook with rage and raised her hand to strike me.But someone caught her wrist mid-swing.Lorenzo.He was holding a box. Inside sat the jade necklace he'd once given to Vella."Lily..." His voice was raw, worn thin. "I took the necklace back. The jade is yours now. Please—just come home with me?"I looked at the emerald glinting in its case. Not a s

Late that night, when Lorenzo led Vella back to the estate, the sight that greeted him made him suck in a sharp breath. The VIPs from every major family sat silently at the table, their faces dark as thunder."Lorenzo! We've been sitting here for three goddamn hours! Not even a cup of hot tea! Is this how your family treats its guests?!"Panic hit Lorenzo like a freight train. He whipped his head around—the hall was in shambles, and there was no sign of Lily anywhere."Where's Lily?! Where the hell is she?!"He grabbed a servant by the collar and roared. The poor man trembled, barely able to speak:"Th-the Donna... she left in the evening, alone, with a suitcase... she hasn't come back..."Lorenzo's heart plummeted. Something clicked. He sprinted toward the master bedroom like a madman. He threw open the door. The room was spotless. Every single trace of Lily had vanished. He stumbled to the bed and collapsed onto the floor. There, on the pillow—her wedding ring. Resting beside it, a d

The morning of the gala, I woke up to a knife-sharp pain.Weeks of stress and a whole day without food—my stomach was tearing itself apart.I was drenched in cold sweat. I dialed the family doctor. It rang and rang. No one picked up.I threw on a robe and dragged myself out of the room. The sun hadn't even risen, and the estate was already buzzing.Lorenzo stood at the top of the stairs, directing servants as they hauled Vella's things downstairs."Lorenzo—where's the doctor?" I leaned against the railing, my voice thin. "My stomach's killing me. I need a shot."He turned, brow furrowed."Lily, Vella was too nervous to sleep last night. The doctor's giving her a therapy session right now—he can't leave.""She's my private doctor. What gives you the right—"I tried to summon some fire, but it came out weak."Lily, there's a clinic a mile down the road. If you really can't stand it, I'll have the butler drive you. Vella's performance came together at the last minute and I'm busy booking

The night before the gala, my parents were invited to the estate for dinner. The long table was laden with an extravagant spread of seafood.Lorenzo raised his glass, smiling at everyone."To Vella—may she dazzle the entire gala tomorrow. Cheers."All the glasses went up.I looked at the lobster and oysters on my plate and didn't move a muscle.I had a severe seafood allergy—since childhood, one bite and I'd break out in hives, my throat would tighten, breathing would get hard. For three years, not a single seafood dish had ever appeared on this table. And today, Lorenzo had personally curated a menu made entirely of Vella's favorites. He noticed me sitting still, frowned, and seemed to remember."Damn. I forgot Lily's allergic to seafood. I'll have the kitchen make something else."He started to get up, but my father stopped him."Don't worry about it, Lorenzo. Lily can take care of herself. She'll find something in the kitchen later—no need to trouble you."Lorenzo glanced at me, nod
