Chapter 1

Author: King Newton
When I opened the door, a blast of cold air hit me like a wave.

It reminded me of that scary time after a really tough delivery, when I was shivering and truly thought that I might not make it.

Matthew Smith's voice came from behind me, sounding totally surprised.

"Shirley? It's freezing out there. Come on in!"

He did not even seem to care that I was sporting a six-month old baby bump. He pushed me aside roughly, but he was super gentle with the person he was bringing inside.

As he led the person to the living room, Matthew gave me a stern look.

"It's Christmas Eve, so be good, okay? We don't want any trouble."

I took a deep breath and put on a smile.

"Why would I cause trouble? Shirley's like family to you, and we're so happy to have her here!"

I beat him to the punch this time, saying the words he had once said to me in my previous life.

Matthew stopped in his tracks, staring at me in shock.

Finally, he just snorted and said, "I’m glad you understand."

At dinner, everyone was super friendly to Shirley.

Matthew was extra nice, getting her a bowl of soup.

However, then Shirley turned white as a ghost and gagged.

Matthew was right there, rubbing her back, asking what was wrong.

Shirley smiled, kind of embarrassed, "I'm pregnant. About two months along."

The room went quiet for a few seconds.

Matthew looked shocked, but then he was grinning from ear to ear.

Shirley looked at me, tears streaming down her face.

"Cindy, I'm so sorry about that day... we were both drunk, I could... I could get rid of it."

My mother-in-law shot me a fierce look.

"Get rid of it? No way! That's my grandchild!"

Matthew put his arm around Shirley, but when he looked at me, his face was like ice.

"Cindy, I have to do right by Shirley! Don't even think about making a fuss..."

Before he could finish, I simply said "Congratulations," and then calmly took a slice of meat with my fork.

Matthew was so shocked that he nearly choked. "I said that this baby is mine. Didn't you hear me?"

I gave him a smile and assured him I heard.

"Then why aren't you..."

Matthew looked puzzled, probably wondering why I was not upset anymore. The truth was, I had always known Shirley was the one he truly adored.

Even my in-laws, who were always so tough on me, treated her like their own daughter.

I used to think that with love and patience, I could gradually change Matthew's heart, and that especially after we had our own child, he might come back to me.

However, then I found out that Shirley was pregnant too.

In my previous life, that was when I had lost it completely.

I, who had always been kind and forgiving, suddenly broke down and screamed in front of everyone, smashing pots and throwing dishes.

I even threatened Matthew that if he did not send Shirley away right then, I would jump off a building.

My craziness frightened everyone.

They did not want a tragedy on Christmas Eve, so they convinced Matthew to have Shirley leave for a while.

However, nobody expected that Shirley would faint from low blood sugar while walking in the neighborhood.

With no one around to find her, she froze to death on that Christmas Eve night.

It was a heartbreaking loss.

After hearing the news, I was filled with remorse.

However, Matthew, he changed for the better. He did not blame me and turned into the perfect husband.

He was the head of the obstetrics and gynecology department, always busy at work.

Every day, he made me special soups to help me stay healthy for the baby. He told me my health was great and that I would have an easy time giving birth. I trusted him, but when the time came, I had a really hard birth and bled a lot. I cried out in pain for two long days and nights.

When my baby finally came, Matthew did not even try to save him. He just looked at him like he was nothing and said that he was gone.

I begged him to help our son, but he just pushed his assistant away and came at me with a scary look in his eyes, full of hate. He yelled, "Worried about your son? Then go to the morgue with him! Shirley died because of you, and now you're going to feel the pain she felt, twice as much!"

In this life, I just wanted to get away from those monsters.

A bunch of people who claimed to know the truth started talking. Some were nurses and doctors from the hospital, some were Matthew's relatives, and there were even some who said they were "patients.""Everyone at the hospital knows that Mr. Smith and Ms. Jones were childhood best friends and true lovers. Shirley's the unlucky one!"After hearing that, people online started saying really mean things about me.Someone even found out that Edwin was the boss of the most popular gaming company."Cindy's tough, sticking with Matthew until she sees a chance with someone better. "Cindy! Did you get rid of the baby?" he yelled, grabbing my arm so hard it hurt.I frowned in pain, but Edwin was quick to shield me and pushed Matthew away.Matthew was so angry that he slapped me across the face!"You're so cruel! To be with a man, you even got rid of a seven-month-old baby!" he shouted.I never saw it coming. His hand struck my face so hard that blood started trickling from the corner of my mouth.Waiters and customers all around us stopped and stared in shock. They glanced at Edwin, who was dressed in fancy clothes from head to toe, and then back at me. Whispers and looks of judgment started to spread.Edwin was just as surprised by Matthew's sudden slap. He wrapped his arms around me, his face full of worry.I saw Edwin's hands ball into fists, ready to fight back, but I held him back with a calm hand."Matthew, always playing the innocent party, huh? I quickly winked at Edwin, indicating for him to stay quiet. The baby was gone and I did not want Matthew to find out just yet.Who knew if he would lose it again.Once I waited a bit, got my health back, found a job, when everything was steady, then I would come clean.Edwin got the message, but he still looked upset.I knew he thought Matthew was the worst and that I deserved better. However, Shirley did not know that. She thought Edwin was judging me for being pregnant and she was smirking with satisfaction.Edwin glanced at the cardboard box on the floor, and when he saw the broken frame with a picture of me and Matthew, his smile vanished."Why keep this junk around?"I laughed too, and as I walked past the box on the way, I gave it a kick."Right. Once you toss out the trash, there’s no need to pick it up again."With that, I ignored Matthew's scowl and slid into the passenger seat of the Porsche.I had to say, riding in that car worth over three hundred thousand doll

On the day we agreed to meet, Matthew finally unblocked me."Don't look for excuses to stall. I can't waste another minute on you!"I was already at the County Clerk's office door."You're the one stalling. Hurry up. Let's finish this and go our separate ways."Fifteen minutes later, Matthew's BMW pulled up in front of me.He stepped out with a scowl and started mocking me."Just because I blocked you, you had to leave home and vanish for a whole week?”"I thought you'd be too scared to show up for the divorce, but at least you've got some sense."I could not stop myself from letting out an icy laugh.I had been in the hospital with a miscarriage for days, and Matthew did not even know I was close by.Shirley was in the passenger seat, looking me up and down. "Cindy, you're looking pretty good," she said. The cold weather and my weakened state after the miscarriage had me bundled up in a puffy cotton coat and a thick down jacket. They had not noticed that the baby was gone.

After he said that, I looked at him more carefully. There it was, in the shape of his eyebrows and eyes, a shadow of the boy I knew in college."Edwin, it's really you!"I felt a wave of happiness. It was like I was suddenly back in those golden college days.Back to when Edwin and I were in the same group, working on projects together. However, Edwin then said something that snapped me out of my happy memories."Cindy, are you feeling okay? You look really pale!"I instinctively curled my fingers and gave the edge of my messy clothes a tug.Next to his shining, handsome look, I felt like I was just fat and ugly. However, there was no use in hiding anything from him.Matthew had put me through so much over the years. I had always tried to win his and his family's love, but all I got was the cold shoulder and mean jokes. My pride had been eroded a long time ago."It's nothing. I just had a miscarriage.""What?!"Edwin rushed over to steady me.The worry and anger on his
