Chapter 3

Author: Yes to Tacos
Trivialities?!

Harry's cheek flushed beet red, as he clearly believed that it was a big deal that he decided my fate, and it hurt him a lot more than insulting him.

He growled through his teeth in frustration, "You can stop pretending! You were just holding a grudge because I stopped our parents from taking you home, and now you want revenge against me and my sister!"

I finally had enough and burst out laughing.

But when I stopped, I narrowed my eyes coolly. "Mr. Grant, don't you think you're flattering yourself? Revenge against you? Who do you think you are?

"If anything, I should thank you for being so determined in stopping your parents from taking me back. Otherwise, Carl Simpson wouldn't have adopted me as his granddaughter, nor would I gain my present accomplishments… So why would I hate you at all?"

My words were indifferent, but also knives that cut deep into Harry's heart.

Still, his eyes soon lit up, and he laughed as if he had won. "Carl Simpson?! Bullshit! Did you think that changing your last name to Simpson makes you related to Carl?! Dream on! Someone like you won't even make it through their front door!"

But even as he finished, a black luxury car quietly stopped beside us, and a towering man with an air of nobility alighted.

He did not even look at Harry as he hurried to my side, draping a jacket over my shoulders, and tousled my hair affectionately.

"What are you hanging around for, Ruby? Grandpa is getting anxious…"

He trailed off, as it was only then that he noticed Harry. "Who's this?"

I hugged Yannick's arm and beamed. "Oh, just someone who came in for a consultation. We're just talking."

Harry froze as he stared at me hugging Yannick's arm intimately, and then at the luxury car that was a clear symbol of status.

He was not stupid and certainly recognized Yannick, the heir to the Simpsomnia conglomerate.

He was also aware that everyone in the Simpson family doted on Yannick's adopted sister.

However, he just never imagined that it would be me.

He couldn't help remembering that girl who kept tailing him everywhere in that bleached white dress, always calling out to her brother gingerly.

But now, the same girl was beaming and hugging another man's arm, while he was no longer her brother.

Even as Harry spaced out, I got into Yannick's car and left.

The next day, Claire informed me that Harry secured himself another consultation, complaining even as she sorted out some files, "Don't you think there's something wrong with that man, doc? He was completely skeptical not two days ago, and now, he's completely sucking up to you."

Pausing, she then exclaimed, "Wait, I think he must have found out that you're Carl Simpson's granddaughter and wants connections!"

I smiled but said nothing, signing and approving the consultation.

Let's see what tricks Harry was up to this time.

Harry took a long time to recover, and I heard that the first thing he did after waking up was ask where I was.But the nurse told him I was gone and relayed my message that we were strangers. He was silent then and talked a lot less since then.Even though he was very cooperative with treatment and bore with unthinkable pain of skin grafting and disinfection, he never made a sound. He would sit by himself alone, staring outside for days on end, with no one ever figuring out what he was thinking. As for Susie, she was sentenced to jail, as the evidence against her was solid. It was a premeditated assault and disrupting public order, and she was to be jailed for ten years.Mick and Wanda were seated in the public gallery during the verdict, and though Susie kept calling out to them, neither responded at all.Meanwhile, I had a breakthrough with the new medicine I'd developed—all three phases of clinical trials passed with flying colors, and there were minimal side effects. The

Soon, the entire banquet hall erupted into chaos. My head was blank—even as Harry held me, I could clearly pick up the scent of blood and charred flesh from him.Never could I have imagined that he would use his own body to shield me."Why… why?" I asked, hearing the hoarseness of my own voice. He leaned on my shoulder, panting as he mustered all his strength to breathe into my ear, "I owe you one life, Yvie… I'm paying it back now…"And with that, he dropped limply on the floor, completely passing out.The ambulance arrived soon, and he was rushed to the hospital. As both witness and victim, I gave a statement to the police before heading to the hospital, and Susie was arrested right away for deliberate assault.Mick and Wanda also arrived at the hospital shortly thereafter. When they saw their son lying in the emergency ward and hanging by a thread, they were both on the verge of a breakdown.Wanda was crying so badly that she nearly fainted, while I swore I saw Mick's hair

One day, I was just leaving work when Yannick called me. "There's a charity gala tonight, and Grandpa is asking you to represent the family. A dress has been sent to your apartment.""Yeah, got it."I've never been interested in such social events, but I'd never say no to Grandpa Carl.By evening, I put on that tailored silver dress and a little makeup before arriving at the banquet hall punctually. All eyes quickly turned on me as I was representing the Simpsons, with countless immediately approaching to greet me and make small talk.I responded effortlessly, always keeping a formal and distant smile.Still, I was just chatting with a magnate when Susie appeared before me, wearing a cheap dress that made her stick out like a sore thumb, her hair a mess and with a look of utter misery.Heaven knows how she slipped in, but she was glaring fixedly at me with maniacal jealousy and resentment."Yvie Grant!" she screamed shrilly, drawing everyone's attention right away. I frowned

Harry continued, "I've made a mistake, and I shouldn't have hurt you the way I did in our past lives or force you to donate your kidney and throw you out after…"I know that anything I say now is pointless, that I can't even begin to correct what I've done, but all I want to say is that I regret everything."I went everywhere searching for you and only found your remains after you died, and I've lived in regret ever since with the knowledge that I murdered my own sister."I listened to him quietly and suddenly giggled. "You don't get it, Harry Grant—your regret means nothing to me."Staring at his face, which immediately turned pale, I then continued, "Let me tell you the truth that you didn't want to face—Susie didn't die because of kidney failure back then."Harry's head jerked up, his eyes widening and his pupils dilating. "W-What…?"I shrugged as I spoke slowly and clearly, "Susie Grant never died of illness, let alone kidney failure. She died from a drug overdose."She was

Harry's fingers were stiff even as he picked up that weightless sheet of paper and read through the numbers before glancing at Susie's ashen face.He had never imagined that the same Susie whom he had cherished and protected for so long, even murdering his own biological sister for it, had been deceiving him from the very beginning. She had certainly taken them for a ride!"Why? Why would you do this, Susie?" he asked hoarsely, his eyes narrowed in clear pain and disappointment.Wanda was clutching her chest too, demanding angrily, "Yes, Susie! Why on earth did you feign your illness? Why did you lie to us?!"Susie, pushed past her limit, finally broke down in tears. "Why? Because I'm afraid! I'm afraid that you'll no longer want me after you find your real daughter! I'm afraid you'll give all your love to someone else!"She pointed at me and then at Harry, her sobs heart-wrenching as she hollered, "I just wanted her to stay away from us! What's so wrong about that?"I looked on

Time seemed to stop as the Grants' expressions stiffened.Harry was the first to come to his senses, pointing and yelling at me as if everything he heard was a joke."Bulltshit! Susie's always been sick, and every hospital has diagnosed her with latent kidney failure! How dare you say she isn't sick! It seems to me that you're just a quack doctor!"Mick and Wanda came to their senses too and were glaring at me accusingly like they'd been deceived."We came because we trust you, Dr. Simpson! How could you run your mouth like that?!" "Exactly! You'd better explain yourself this instant!"I simply looked between their indignant glares, chuckling coolly. "Run my mouth, you say?"After all, Susie had already turned pale the instant she heard me saying she was not sick and was clawing into Harry's arm before she knew it.I wheeled on Harry right then. "Mr. Grant, your sister has weak kidneys, but far from the level of actual organ failure, let alone needing a transplant."The sympt
