Chapter 8

Author: Lotus
"Do you have any proof that I stole anything?" I cut in calmly, interrupting Anna's accusation.

The group of women burst into laughter.

"Proof? You came out of an orphanage, probably desperate for money. Seeing something valuable, of course you'd want to steal it. Why would we need proof?"

"Search her. Check what's in her bag."

A few men stepped forward, reaching for me. I shook them off in disgust, my gaze turning icy. "Touch me again, and I'll cut your filthy hands off."

Sofia stepped forward with a sigh, her voice full of fake sympathy. "Isabella, just hand over the crown. I promise I won't pursue this any further. Why make things harder for yourself?"

"I said I didn't take it." My voice turned even colder.

The pity on her face vanished, replaced by sharp mockery. "I see," she said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "No one ever taught you manners, poor little orphan, so you end up chasing fantasies that don't belong to you."

She raised her chin slightly. "Too bad that crown was never yours. Hand it over, and I'll pretend none of this happened."

The more generous she sounded, the more contempt filled the eyes around us.

I had no patience left for that, so I pulled out my phone, ready to call someone to check the surveillance footage.

Before I could dial, a shadow fell over me.

Vincent had returned.

He grabbed my wrist, his grip so tight it felt like he might crush the bone.

"How did you get in here?" His eyes flashed with anger as he lowered his voice. "Don't cause trouble. Tonight is important to me."

"Vincent!" Sofia immediately switched to a pitiful expression. "She stole my crown. Throw her out!"

He did not hesitate for a second. His voice turned sharp as he questioned me. "You stole something again?"

Again.

I let out a bitter laugh and spread my hands. "Yes, I stole it. And later, I'll steal something even more important. Just watch."

His grip tightened, his teeth clenched.

"Have you lost your mind? First you tried to take the ring, now you're stealing a crown. Not only do you refuse to admit it, you're still talking like this. Isabella, is this what comes from growing up in an orphanage? You can't change that thieving nature of yours?"

I could not take it anymore, I lifted my foot and kicked him hard.

"I'm an orphan. Then what does that make you, the one who raised me?"

For a moment, he had no response.

"Search her!" Anna screamed. "Make her hand it over!"

"Yeah, search her!"

"Thief! Give Miss Costa's crown back!"

Clutching my suitcase, I dodged their hands as best as I could. In the chaos, someone kicked me hard in the stomach.

I stumbled back and slammed into the wall. Pain exploded through me, and the suitcase flew from my hand.

Anna lunged forward immediately and flipped it open.

Inside was a magnificent crown, set with massive diamonds that shimmered brilliantly under the lights.

"That's it!" Sofia pointed at it, her voice sharp with triumph. "Caught red-handed. She's the one who stole it!"

Vincent looked at me as if I were nothing but trash. "Isabella, you've disappointed me." He grabbed my arm and started dragging me toward the exit.

Amid the chaos, a commanding voice rang out.

"Let go."

The room fell silent at once, the crowd parted instinctively.

Donna Costa walked forward in an elegant gown, every step carrying the weight of absolute authority.

The pressure she brought with her was suffocating.

Vincent assumed she was there to stand up for Sofia. He quickly pulled me behind him, trying to block me from view.

He bowed respectfully.

"Donna, I apologize for the disturbance. I will deal with this thief immediately…"

Sofia rushed forward as well. "Mother, this thief…"

A sharp crack cut through the air.

The slap landed hard across Sofia's face.

In December, the winds of Sicelia cut sharp and cold. The engagement banquet was held at the Costa family's oldest estate.Built along the coastline, the manor overlooked the dark blue Mediterranean through towering floor-to-ceiling windows.Tonight, every light was blazing.Almost every Don, family representative, and council elder in the mafia world had gathered here.I stood on the terrace of the grand hall, looking down at the crowd below.I wore a custom gown, with my mother's emerald shawl draped over my shoulders.Matteo stepped up beside me. Dressed in a deep gray suit, his broad shoulders and commanding presence seemed to quiet the world around him."Nervous?" he asked softly."A little," I admitted. He let out a low laugh and gently placed his warm hand over mine. "Don't be. I'm here."I turned to meet his gaze. There was nothing in his eyes but admiration and love.I smiled. "I know."Below us, the orchestra began to play a slow, elegant melody.Matteo extended

Vincent became obsessed with seeing me.He waited outside the Costa family headquarters like a vagrant.Every attempt to contact me failed. His calls were always redirected. The letters he sent were returned unopened. The girl he once summoned and dismissed at will had become a principessa he could no longer even glimpse. He started repeating the same words to everyone around him."It wasn't her. My Bella would never do this."She's soft, she's kind. She wouldn't be this ruthless."It has to be the Costa family pulling the strings. It has to be."The louder he spoke, the emptier his eyes became. In the end, Vincent broke.Under the weight of blow after blow, he finally understood something clearly. The girl he had treated like a possession, someone he thought he could control, had always had the power to destroy him.He began to have nightmares every night. In his dreams, I was still the girl who handed him a can of tomatoes by the sea. When he woke up, all that remained

I sat in the passenger seat of Matteo's car.The window was half open, and the salty sea breeze rushed in, sweeping away the heavy scent of perfume.I had assumed he would take me somewhere extravagant. A private club. A Michelin-starred restaurant. However, when the car came to a stop, I froze. In front of me was a small seaside restaurant. The wooden sign above the door was weathered by years of wind and salt, with the word "Home" written in Sicelian dialect.Wind chimes hung under the porch, ringing softly in the breeze."Why here…" I murmured, surprised."In this city, it's my favorite place," Matteo said as he opened the door for me. His voice softened in the wind. "It's also where I first saw you.""The first time you saw me?" I frowned, confused. He guided me inside. The place was simple. Wooden tables and chairs. Faded paintings of the sea hung on the walls.Behind the counter stood a middle-aged man with a kind smile. When he saw Matteo, he nodded respectfully.I

Sofia's sobbing stopped abruptly. "What… what do you mean?""That driver," Vincent said slowly, each word deliberate, "he claimed he was your man.""That's a lie. He was framing me."Vincent listened to her excuses and let out a tired sigh.He should have known. She would never admit fault."Enough," he cut her off. "Then why did you send him to hit Isabella?""I didn't want to kill her," Sofia screamed. "I just wanted to scare her. I wanted her to stay away from you."He did not respond. His silence only made her break down further."Vincent, what is this supposed to mean? Are you feeling sorry for her now? Do you regret it? Isn't the one you love supposed to be me?"I'm carrying your child. Your own blood."Vincent closed his eyes."Sofia, I can't help you.""Vincent, you promised you would marry me. You said you would make me your Donna.""That was because you were the Costa family's principessa."His voice finally broke, anger rising to the surface."I humored you,

(Third-person perspective)In just one night, the Russo family fell from the strongest force in the region into the abyss. After the banquet, the Costa family was the first to cut off all cooperation.Soon after, the other families that had already reached agreements began to withdraw one by one.Rival families moved quickly, severing the Russo family's weapons, drug, and smuggling routes. The core members looked pale, their arguments nearly tearing the room apart."I told you not to offend the Costas!""What's the point of saying that now? Three of our armories have been wiped out. We've lost millions!"Even worse, the family's internal information had somehow been exposed."Don, our legitimate businesses, the restaurants and shipping companies, their stocks are crashing!"Some members even had their identities leaked.Vincent listened to the reports, his voice icy. "Find out who leaked the information."The consigliere wiped sweat from his forehead, his voice shaking. "Th
